Help with mod configuration

Post » Mon Jun 07, 2010 8:53 am

Hi all
-First: This is NOT a comparison, but just a help request. I know this is a perfectly subjective question, but any help will be much appreciated.
-Second: I DON'T want to use FCOM, not anymore. It is a really installation and compatibility nightmare and if a mod (even if of high quality like FCOM: convergence) is too difficult to install, it makes the game less playable and enjoyable. I already played with it tought, and it's amazing, but too heavy. I tend to preserve my FPSs.
-Third: I'll provide links for every single mod, so you can use this like a modlist.
Let's begin!

I want to have a clean install of Oblivion GOTY edition (not steam), or Oblivion+SI (without Kot9), and I have downloaded these mods:

PATCHES:
-Unofficial Oblivion Patch (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296) What's a stable version I can use?
-Unofficial SI Patch (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10739) Same as above
-Unofficial Official DLC Patch (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9969) I don't know if Knights needs this and if there is a specifical patch for it, any advice? I won't use Knights

GRAPHIC, MISC GRAPHIC, ENVIRONMENT:
-RAEWD (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20053) Included the one for SI and the one for Elseweyr. Heavy

You might have to dump RAEVWD then. VWD mods by nature are real performance killers, and the 9600 isn't really the greatest card out there. It will probably cut your framerate by at least half.

Aah, Open Cities and RAEVWD. Pretty much a guaranteed to choke your video card. And you don't need BTQ Landscape LODs. It was designed specifically for QTP textures and you don't have any of those those listed. It will probably look quite odd with vanilla textures.

You don't need Realistic Fatigue and SM Encumbrance & Fatigue. They both do the same thing, just in different ways. My preference is with SM Encumbrance these days, though I used to use Realistic. I find the new version to be too harsh.

Oh my, RAEVWD, Open Cities and Tamriel Travellers. You really want to punish your video card don't you?

Don't bother with Operation Optimization, the performance benefits are marginal. You'd be better off getting the PyFFI utility and optimizing the meshes yourself.

For leveling, OblivionXP. I tweaked for that "only kill give XP". I think is the best because you havent a chance to do exploits for increasing atributes.

While I think that Oblivion XP is a good mod, it's a complete departure from the default leveling system and may not appeal to everyone. I myself prefer to use something that's at least somewhat close to the Bethesda system, which is why I use KCAS. Both nGCD and Realistic Leveling use the same basic method, i.e. advance by performing an action, as the default as well. Oblivion XP is more like the Fallout system, which might not appeal to someone playing Oblivion.

-Illumination Within Revived Optimized (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6244) Anyone knows if there's one better than this?

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19628. The one you've listed is obsolete.

LEVELING:
-nGCD (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14065)
-Realistic Leveling (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13879)
Which one prizes better specialisation?

nGCD plus Progress, also by Tejon, give you the most customisable leveling experience out there.

OPTIMIZATION
-Operation Optimization (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21705)
-Streamline (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10400)

Drop Optimization. Get OSR (Oblivion Stutter Remover). Use it with Streamline or without for a smoother more crash-free game.

Aside from the above tips, you should know:
  • Using OOO+MMM instead of FCOM is not going to save you any fps.
  • Any mod that adds a lot of NPCs (like Tamriel Travelers) will have an fps hit. This is from CPU usage, not the video card. I have a better CPU and better video card than you, and I get 25 fps average outside using FCOM, RAEVWD (configured for less impact).
  • Open Cities is fine. By itself, it doesn't carry a significant fps hit. Along with the others you're listing, you'll have a cumulative hit.

Also, you keep mentioning "compatibilites," which I find strange since you listed FCOM as a "compatibility nightmare." This is simply not true, and I have to wonder what exactly you are referring to? And, going from FCOM to OOO+MMM isn't going to help you avoid any of the compatibility problems you seem to think you had. Mod compatibilities are usually listed in readmes (read Open Cities' readme carefully for an important note about the KoTN patch), and most conflicts are worked out with a bashed patch or just using correct load order. So, unless you fill out your meaning a bit, I don't know quite what to tell you on that score.

PATCHES:
-Unofficial Oblivion Patch (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296) What's a stable version I can use?

Use this version 3.20, the various files are only different ways to install it. Use one of the last two (manual or OMOD.)
Then upgrade to the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27710

-Unofficial SI Patch (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10739) Same as above

Ditto, doesn't matter, although EXE versions don't work on some systems (like Vista)

-Unofficial Official DLC Patch (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9969) I don't know if Knights needs this and if there is a specifical patch for it, any advice?

Knights is included. And you can select just the ones you require.
The OMOD automatically adds only the patches for what DLCs you have installed.

GRAPHIC, MISC GRAPHIC, ENVIRONMENT:
-RAEWD (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20053) Included the one for SI and the one for Elseweyr

Good (great actually) but can cause a FPS hit, esp on weaker machines.

-BTQ Landscape LODs (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7212)

I use this: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18497, and a couple of others. It can be a complicated game to get it all just right, and can also create a bit of a FPS hit, as it increases (doubles or more) the size of the distant landscape textures.

-Detect Life Shaders: 1.(http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25204) 2.(http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3756) Which one works better?

I use the one that comes with LAME (as I happen to be using that anyway) but I think this comes down to a simple matter of preference. Both of those work with invisible characters (some don't) and seem popular.

-Illumination Within Revived Optimized (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6244) Anyone knows if there's one better than this?

I do indeed!
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19628
It's illumination on speed! Is still being updated etc., and now covers Shivering Isles as well.
And better yet; as it works differently it has ZERO FPS hit!

-Elven Map (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3002, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16640, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27519 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31314)

The last one is mine ( So it's just gotta be good, no? )
You will want the SI one, as it is a completely different map. For the other main map, you will only want one (as that is all you can use) - I suggest you select the one from my Elven Map Compilations (all linked from that Bartholm one of yours above) which suits your load order best, out of these mods:
Stirk
Bartholm
Castle Dunkerlore
Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina
Leyawiin Reborn
New Roads and Bridges Revised
Dragon Captions - The Imperial City of Sutch Reborn
West Roads.

-Open Cities (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16360) Hope this is not a compatibility nightmare, any advice for compatibility with mods before this and after this?

Don't know about compatability, but I think it can cause an FPS hit.
ANd I just like http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16513 instead.

-UI darnified (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763)

Use that myself, it's excellent.

-Visually enchanted (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/search.php) I really want get rid of this one, but seems that the LAME shader is broken to me, I can't make it work. Any better shader replacer?

I've found that they all annoy me, after a very short while.

-Book Jacket Oblivion (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5570)

There is also:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27521 for Knights.
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16247 Two files for SI and Spell tomes

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=32071
Is an OMOD which includes most of these.

Also just found this one (haven't used it myself, yet):
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29358 ("espless book replacer using Lady Nerevar's Book Jackets resourse, Phoenix Amon's Book Jackets, Rob_b's Book Jackets Oblivion: Mysterium Xarxes Texture Replacer, and Grimbot's DLC Book Jackets - SI.")

-Enhanched Water (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8011) I heard that there are some issues with other mods, I don't know, any advice or maybe a better water mod?

I use this version myself, with no problems:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23064

-Real Night Sky (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16617) Old, but still impressively beautiful. I don't know if it may conflict with the next

No conflicts (just a texture replacer really) and it's the one I prefer and use myself.

-Enhanched weather (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16544) Advice on conflicts, please

My advice, check out:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18305
It's awesome!
Still being actively worked on, and supported.
Includes the Vanilla weathers and those from Natural Weather, Atmospheric Weather System, and Enhanced Weather! (Well over 100 weather variants!)
As well as adding Natural Interiors: Windows look like they actually view the outside world, and add weather sounds to indoor spaces (so you can still hear that storm raging outside.)
And Real Lights. Which is optional as it can cause a fair FPS hit. But make lights (flames/torches etc.) emit far more realistic lighting.

Oh and when combined with Animated Window Lighting System and Chimneys (above): Awesome!

-Rainbows in tamriel (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8927) I used it in order to load the Fran's BSA when I used FCOM, but I like this mod xD

Great little enhancement mod. I love it. (one of the few "small" mods I insist on keeping.

-Darker Mods Pack (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14118)

I prefer:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29692

You will want a torch mod (or two) along with this though (especially with Real lights active as well - man it get dark!) Such as:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16282 so you drop your torch when you use your weapons/shield (otherwise you won't see a damn thing!)

And how about giving some to NPCs as well?
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26524
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7615

SOUND:
-More Immersive Sounds Edited (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19038)
-Oblivion Stereo Sound Overhaul (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5861) Ancient mod, I don't know if there is something similar at today
-Symphony of Violence (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13987)

Use them all, just fine.

TWEAKS AND ADDICTIONS:
-Display Stats (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31855)

Nice new mod.

-Days and Months (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15166) I don't know if this might be useful

Purely a personal preference thing I think.

...
-Cyrodiil Transportation Network (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4520)

I use:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21999
Because the author, Arthmoor, is known for incredibly clean, functional and compatible-as-possible mods.
...
-Universal silent voices (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16622) OBSE addition for mods with no voice acting, but with dialogue lines

Indispensable for many mods.

-Cats and Rats (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5276) I can't find the use for this, but it looks funny and adds more life and realism to the world

Try:
http://theelderscrolls.info/?go=dlfile&fileid=255 for maximum compatibility. It is just a mod to add to the "feel" of the game, no practical use whatsoever.

-Leviathan Soulgems (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23162 or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10403?) Which soulgem replacer is less buggy?

I have the original without issue.

OVERHAULS:
-Race Balancing Project (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22124) Overhaul of all races and birthsigns
-Common Oblivion [COBL] (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21104) Improved realism with cobl

Personally I just use COBL, including it's race stuff. But some prefer RBP (and a few mods require it.)

OPTIMIZATION
-Operation Optimization (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21705)

Considered outdated, advise dropping it

-Streamline (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10400)

Suggest adding:
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23208
Will help with FPS and a much smoother game.

-Detect Life Shaders: 1.(http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25204) 2.(http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3756) Which one works better?

I made Life Detected because I honestly hated Kasdar's, and there was nothing else that worked with invisible opponents. When I started work on that I had never done anything with textures or shaders, so it turned into a big experiment... the result being, lots and lots of options. :)

LEVELING:
Which one prizes better specialisation?

nGCD directly rewards specialization, particularly in the early game, because versatility is its own reward. The choice between specialized and versatile should be a meaningful decision, where you give something up either way.

Thanks for the replyes^^

@Belanos: I'll drop REAVWD, I knew it was a FPS-hit mod and my video card wasn't the best, but I think using open cities and tamriel travellers is not so hitting... Well... I never used open cities, so I don't know, I'll just try. I'll try to see what PyFFI does and how to use it, if it may save my FPSs. Thanks for help

@Tejon: I'll use your mods I think. They're balanced. nGCD+Progress+INI customization... Is there a way to make work the RBP health and magicka changes instead of nGCD ones? I like the idea of retroactive endurance to diversificate races. Your life shader is awesome! It gives more "Life" sense. I posted the two shaders only because I downloaded both and to receive advices about bugs and so on, but I decided to use yours before post this topic. Thanks, anyway

@Vargr: I posted Cyrodiil Transportation network because I can disable Fast travel... I don't want to fall in temptation xD. And it gives variety to travel too. If this will conflict with something , I'll give a try to Arthmoor's one. I'll drop Cats&Rats for FPSs and I'll use OSR for optimization instead of Operation Optimization. The Weather mod looks AWESOME! I'll definitely give a try. As I wrote on the first post the visually anchanted annoy me, the LAME one is way better... But I can't make it work xD. Book jackets are a good addition, so I'll try your links instead of "Book Jackets Oblivion". Now, talking about unofficial patches, I'll download 320 OMOD and I'll update to 326. I did not understand what did you mean about the SI patch, I have Vista, so I won't donload the EXE, but I still need it, don't I? I have the OMOD one, thought. Thanks.

@gothemasticator: I'll use AWLS. As you said, mine is obsolete and AWLS is lightweight and widely supported. FCOM made some of my favourite tweaks not work, I think it was his fault not directly, but because of the mods together. More mods, more incompatibilities, maybe too much esps and bad load order (I used BOSS, so I don't give credit to this last thing) I used OOO alone before, and I found that LOTS of mods worked, and not with FCOM. Maybe I'll drop MMM, saving myself too much enemies on screen, even if I love MMM features.

@desertor: I have just tried OBXP, but I leveled too fast for my tastes... In about a week I passed from level 5 to 21... and I played one hour or two per day!
By the way, I find it less realistic than skill based systems, so I'll use nGCD+Progress. Thanks for the reply anyway!

Thank you all, now I need only tips about magic overhauls and it's done
Thanks again^^

-Enhanced Economy (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25078) Any Advice for compatibility? (of course I won't install OOO's Living Economy)
-Bank of Cyrodiil (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3172) Is it compatible with Thievery in the Imperial City?
-Tamriel Travelers (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4387) More life to the world and more diversificated merchants

I work very hard to make Enhanced Economy overall compatible if possible. Currently, the only known incompatibility (aside from LE) is "Advanced Magecraft.esp", but that will be fixed in next version of EE. Specifically, EE knows about the two other economical mods you've listed, and ensures full compatibility with them.

May I suggest one of my other mods then: Map Marker Overhaul. It has many useful features, but it also has settings for completely disable Fast Travel, or to allow it, but only for limited distances, or only for a certain toal distance within a timeframe (e.g. allow you one Fast Travel from the IC to Chorrol, but then you will not be allowed to use Fast Travel again for the next 48 in-game hourse (or whatever you set the timer to).

No problems with Advanced Magecraft, I don't plan to use it because I consider it like a cheat. I have alternatives on it, so I won't install OOO's living economy and it should be fine.
Nice mod, anyway and keeep up the good work

While I've never tried Open Cities, I've read that it can cause a performance hit. You're basically expanding on the size of the World map so it's bound to have an effect. You might want to try with and without just to compare. And no Tamriel Travelers on it's own is not that demanding, but when you combine it with other demanding mods, like RAEVWD, it will certainly have an impact. It's really too bad that having VWD in the game causes such a performance drop. I would love to have it in my game, but I just don't want to lose any more FPS. I'm already hovering around the 30-35 mark so I can't really afford to go much lower. As for what PyFFI does, it allows you optimize most your meshes yourself, rather than just a few here and there like Operation Optimization does. You'll gain a substantial increase in performance by using it, though it does require a bit of work.

Yes, as far as I'm concerned this is a must-have mod. Same with Enhanced Economy.

Open Cities in and of itself will barely have any impact on fps. Really the only change in performance is that your computer is rendering a more detailed LOD for the rest of the world when you are in the city. This shouldn't change performance much, unless you are using a mod like RAEVWD. I found the city components of RAEVWD caused a very heavy slowdown in combination with Open Cities. I would also suggest avoiding the City Defenses.esp included in MMM. It adds guards with torches on the city walls which are a heavy burden on the CPU.

Open Cities is a great mod, so if you are considering it, try browsing TESNexus for patches. Most of the well known quest mods are supported.

So, if I use PyFFI for the meshes I would even able to NOT drop MMM? These are good news^^
I'll definitely drop RAEVWD, but I'll continue to use Opens Cities and Travellers... Without guards on the walls from MMM (never used this ESP, thought).
I found something which don't make you crash on quit and something which http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22282 (if it works). Any advice on them?

@Breton Paladin: I like OOO's bottles so much, but not not the ones for custom potions/poisons.

Hope I will make work PyFFI without mess up my software xD

oh, and how can I know the FPS rate I have in real time? I've always judged on eye (I mean fluid/semi-fluid/slideshow ---> fluid=good, semi-fluid=normal, slideshow=bad)

Thank you very much for all the tips! :D

weOCPS works just fine, and it does indeed prevent some ingame crashes. I recommend it.

PyFFI - you should read the current PyFFI thread.

MMM - PyFFI-ing the meshes won't help you much at all in the CPU department. Again, mods that add NPCs or creatures will increase the load on your CPU, and Oblivion does not so good a job with CPU-related stuff. You'll get more results by using the "Reduced" or "No Xxxx-es" plugins from MMM.

Tracking fps ingame - use the free version of FRAPS. Works great.

For FPS, enter the console (~) and type tdt (then press Enter of course). You can exit or reenter the console, and the info will still be up in the top left. You can get more info than this by following up with sdt 13 - it'll then also show, in the top right, memory use from textures, and other associated stuff. sdt 2 returns tdt to normal mode.

edit: left <-> right. :facepalm:

@Vargr: I posted Cyrodiil Transportation network because I can disable Fast travel... I don't want to fall in temptation xD.

Fair enough.
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26389 also offers the ability to disable or limit fast travel as well, that might interest you for other reasons as well. ;)

Might as well say a bit more :D
GRAPHIC, MISC GRAPHIC, ENVIRONMENT:
-Elven Map (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3002, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16640, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27519 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31314) + http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26389

Remember that you only really want two map mods:
One for Tamriel - I recommend my one from one of my compilations, as you seem to like the Elven Map versions. (So not the Elsweyr ("elsewhere" ) and Bartholm ones linked.)
And another for SI - as linked above by you.

The excellent Map Marker Overhaul changes icons etc, not the map. So add that as well.

- Koldorn Improved Lava (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8786) Nobody wants the red water they call "lava" don't they? ;) same as above for advices

I really should look again into what one I want for lava myself.
This link might be of some interest to you:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/960829-environment-mod-list/page__view__findpost__p__13880010

TWEAKS AND ADDICTIONS:
**Cyrodiil travel service (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21999) + map marker overhaul and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27957

Command Mounts eh?
I use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8766 myself, as it does the same plus saddle bags, and an interesting "own stolen horses over time" feature.
