Help with modding?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:08 am

Ok, I know this sounds very stupid....=/ but I don't know what I should do, cus like i said, im new to modding, but not to fallout 3, so atm id like to no how to mod so that i could get ready for new vegas, so the first thing i thought of doing was to install fallout mod manager, cus that seems obvious, and i no this sounds lazy, but i didnt really understand most of the stuff in the faqs cus im no programmer and im just stupid =/, so i tried to install fomm, but what i got was

"unable to get write permissions for fallout's installation directory. please read the `readme - fomm.txt file found in the fomm subfolder of your FOMM installation"

like i said, i have NO CLUE wat this means and yes im well aware this is really simple, but im completely new to this so dont shun me from existence for not knowing something so simple, so could someone put this in terms that someone COMPLETELY NEW TO MODS could understand? and after that, wat would be my next step and wat would be the best mod to install afterwards?

im sorry for these stupid questions =/

Sounds like User Access Control (UAC) is blocking access. You need to either disable this feature, or install FO3 outside the Program Files folder.

1. Stop being sorry. We all started from scratch at some point.

Not to mention its annoying to read something thats 90% "Im sorry for being nooby".

2. Simple answer is it is trying to install, but the location in which it is trying to install, it cant get permission. Are you the administrator of that computer?

If possible, you should uninstall Fallout 3 and install it to a location outside of the Program Files folder, such as C:\Games\Fallout 3. To get to chose install folder, chose the Custom Install option when installing Fallout 3. If you do not have administrator rights on the computer in question, you may need to ask a person that has administrator rights to help you. This should fix all issues with Windows security and modding Fallout 3.

well i do have the rights to the computer, but the only problem now is, I DONT WANT TO LOSE MY [censored] SAVE! if i were to lose it just so i could mod, theres no way id do that, id rather wait for new vegas, but is there a way around that so i can install it again AND keep my save?

The saves are not located in your game folder, it's stored in your windows user folder.

Ok, so far this is what I need to do:

1. back up my save for fallout
2. uninstall and reinstall
3. use that back up save
4. THEN use fomm
