Help with Repeated Game Crashes - tried everything

Okay I'm at my wits end, I've tried everything to get this game to run for more than 10 mins without crashing.

- tried the d3d9.dll fix, still crashes
- tried the .ini edits, still crashes
- game is patched to current version
- just down loaded Nvidia drivers 260.99, high hopes, nada still crashes
- tried playing in Windows mode, seems to last a little longer, but yep, still crashes.
- tried running in windows compatibility mode for XP, Vista, etc, no luck
- Steam cloud is disabled, tried most settings in steam, nope...

Fallout 3 was my all-time favourite game, it is such a let-down to be busting to play this and not go for 10 mins without the game crashing and often hard-locking up my system.

Key info: SLI 285GTX, i7 940, 6 GB ram, Windows 7 64-bit

Okay I'm at my wits end, I've tried everything to get this game to run for more than 10 mins without crashing.

- tried the d3d9.dll fix, still crashes
- tried the .ini edits, still crashes
- game is patched to current version
- just down loaded Nvidia drivers 260.99, high hopes, nada still crashes
- tried playing in Windows mode, seems to last a little longer, but yep, still crashes.
- tried running in windows compatibility mode for XP, Vista, etc, no luck
- Steam cloud is disabled, tried most settings in steam, nope...

Fallout 3 was my all-time favourite game, it is such a let-down to be busting to play this and not go for 10 mins without the game crashing and often hard-locking up my system.

Key info: SLI 285GTX, i7 940, 6 GB ram, Windows 7 64-bit

Can anyone on this forum please have a look at my direct x diagnostic below and suggest something.

Have you tried running on only one card, non-SLI, and if you have more than a single display, have you tried just one at a time? Sorry about the DxDiag. About 5% into it, the text goes wall to wall without formatting, and when I try looking at that, I just get a soup of swimming letters and words.

Thank you for the reply Gorath, I've just tried disabling SLI, hmm seems to be more stable and I only crashed when switching to mouse versus XBOX 360 controller.

I'll try again and also try the codec solution one member just posted up.

I do notice the frame-rate drop a little, it would blow if I have to play this game on one card! I'm at the point of giving up and buying this on XBOX 360 instead!!

If you or anyone see's something wrong with my direct x log let me know.

This is not about the graphic card, even a GTS 250 can handle it pretty well at max settings. It's just about to use the right software to run it.
Honestly, FNV graphics svck anyway.

If nothing else works, I'd try to disable AA AND run the game in a window. (Worked for me.)

I'm happy to report my crashing issues have been FIXED!

(well almost, crashes have dropped from every 10-20 mins to only random event type crashes that I'm sure we are all experiencing with this game)

I managed to play 2 hours straight last night with no crash, solid 60fps (v-sync on) and no issues.

Here is what I think made the difference:

- dropped AA to x2, and AF to 2 samples
- made a custom profile for FalloutNV.exe via the Nvidia control pannel that has power management set to = Performance
- That profile also has SLI-mode set to on/Nvidia managed (I have a 285GTX SLI set-up)
- I now run the game with Steam in 'off-line' mode

+ I have made the .ini file tweaks recommended in this forum
+ I have the modified .dll file
+ 260.99 NVidia drivers installed and obviously FNV fully patched.
+ Running FalloutNV.exe in compatibility mode for XP SP3
