Help with Wrye Bash - Do I need to re-install skyrim?

Post » Thu Mar 06, 2014 11:56 pm

(First off, I wanted to try and make a post in the official Wrye Bash thread, but its now locked.)

Hello, so I've been thinking of using Wrye Bash so that two mods that I wish to use will work together, however I've come across an issue.

When I tried to install Wrye Bash, it said that the installation won't continue because of where I have installed Skyrim, which in this case is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common. I've made a backup of all my mods, and I use Nexus mod manager, so this saves me quite a lot of time of re-installing all of my mod files...

I've tried looking around for answers, but so far I haven't been able to find anything that answers my question. I also have no external drives... I wish to keep all of the files on my PC.

Do I need to uninstall Skyrim and re-install it somewhere else? If so, where would be a good place to install it so that Wrye bash can properly function? \Documents\my games?

Its been a problem with all TES games ( and I should imagine any others with any modding tools that need to manipulate files in a protected folder )

The best way is to install Steam ( and the games ) outside of Program files

Because Program files is protected by windows UAC

Some people choose to switch off UAC - But you are just lowering your layered defences against malware if you take that approach.

Others will give programs elevated access rights to manipulate files in a protected folder, can be quite complicated

Best way ( even though initially it seems to be a PITA ) is to do as advised by Wrye Bash description.

C:\Games\Steam\ is often used if you have only one internal hard drive ( with only one partition )
or just C:\Steam\

See the steam article on moving location https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7710-TDLC-0426

The Nexus Mod manager page for Wrye Bash links to thread 33.

...Huh. Didn't see thread 35 until you pointed it out...
