A herb that cures depression

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:42 pm

Hi guys.

I am working on a mod and I was wondering if TES lore(particularly one related to Cyrodiil, but can be from other provinces) mentions that any of the herbs used in oblivion, morrowind... have antidepressant effect. To explain it a bit better I have an NPC who is really depressed and in a quest I need to get him a herb that will make him feel better. Now, I'm guessing that there is no such mention of an antidepressant herb so I'll probably use a random one, but I wanted to ask you guys if you ever came across something(on the web, in any in-game book) that mentions this.

Haven't seen anything, but be creative, and mix some of the effects of pre-existing herbs, like something that would restore personality, and say it's an anti-depressant.

I suppose I'll use Primrose Leaves as they restore personality and willpower and fortify luck which is the best combination of effects that any of the pre-existing herbs give that's roughly similar to antidepressants.

I know in real life that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Johns_Wort has antidepressant effects. The closest thing in Tamriel would be the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:St._Jahn%27s_Wort_Nectar in Cyrodiil.

Do you realize that even those who believe current medications for depression can assist in getting over depression recommend that it is taken only in addition to therapy and that it will in no one just "cure" it immediately? The idea that depression, which can become quite serious and debilitating, can be simply cured over night, even with magical herbs or potions is ridiculous, even potentially offensive. I can imagine there being things that could temporarily be effective, moonsugar and things along those lines, but I doubt that is what you are looking for.

Alaisiagae gave a rather clever answer, which is probably the most likely herb Tamriel would use for that, since it is supposed to be a reference to St. John's Wort.

But---- you could certainly liven it up with some psychotropics! Morning glory contains a lysergic acid anolog.

Yeah, as Alaisiagae said, St. John's Wort works.

The Dwemer were never depressed; they had no emotions, or at least were above it =/

You could always have like a recipe which makes a potion that could help it like modern antidepressants.

Primrose Leaves-Restore Personality Trait
Moonsugar-The Added High to Counter the Depressive outlook
St. Jahns Wort-The Reference thing
Anything else that sounds good
