Here we go again

I'm really not a fan of oil, and I'm hoping that these disasters will help to get the public on board for alternative energy sources.

^If you're trying to say that flying is safer than boat riding.. lol. At least on a boat you have a chance to get off it. In a plane, you're SOL.

No, I get sea-sick.

Really, really sea-sick.

Going nuclear is out of the question, and solar only works in the daytime ;p.

As in nuclear vehicles? Or just a bunch of plants? If we're thinking vehicles, then I don't want no nuclear car.

As for plants....I could go either way, really.

I was a bit more disappointed in BP clean-up efforts after hearing
But 40 oil-skimming boats and about 800 fishing boats were also deployed to clean up the spill, and Xinhua said more than 15 kilometers (9 miles) of oil barriers had been set up to keep the slick from spreading.
Granted the magnitude and cause are different in the two accidents. But still. I'd guess that the fishing boats are being paid to help clean the surface which will at least help [the fishers] with the imminent loss of sea-life.

Rain rain go away, come again some other day.

Did it work?

Gotta give them props for using and coordinating what limited resources they had.
My condolences to that firefighter's family. Damn.

To play devils advocate:

Right now we still need oil, and to be frank off shore is probably the best sourse. Tar sand are worse for the enviroment, middle east has political issues.

Off shore is light oil that is accessable and better for the enviroment than unconventional oil.

Oh, no doubt we need oil. An overnight change is impossible. The thing we complain about is that the oil companies have a stranglehold on any other sort of alternative energy source, and won't allow the source to come to public use.

Why is going nuclear out of the question? France uses Nuclear, it wouldn't be too much of a step to convert the cars to electric.

I'm prone to agree with you.

Nuclear generates alot of power, and when paired with electric cars it looks even better.

Nuclear, like many other energy sources, has its drawbacks. Not just environmental, but political as well.

While I think eletric cars would be great they would need new refuleing stations to re charge, it would have to be quick to charge them aswell. Also oil isnt just fuel, its in clothes, plastic and oil to help maintian the cars. Even without it unless we can synthetically make something else, or find alternatives we still need it. I hope we run out soon though, because it seems thats the only way we will ever search for alternatives, becuse right now there is little desire to use/seek alternatives.

But we can't actually run out of oil. We could, potentially, run out of easy places to get it, but we can't actually run out of oil.

And I oppose electric cars cause they look fugly. At least the current ones. And I ain't drivin' no fugly car.

Political drawbacks? Like upsetting the oil moguls? Look at it this way, there's a crap ton of uranium on Mars, if you can ship that to earth, you've got a whole extra planet of fuel to plunder, and all the iron ore you can fit in the hold as well.

We can make clothes without plastics, in fact, we make better clothes without it.

Earth is a tad more resilient than you give it credit, and despite all our failings, humanity has a knack for surviving.

True, hopefully they will make decent looking ones soon, we have good looking hybrids, may aswell go the full way.

Ok if we can make clothes what about plastic (used everywhere) and oil to lubricate machines, machines wont be that great when we cant maintain them.

But first we have to get to Mars. Then set up mining/extraction facilities. Then either have vessels going back and forth, or create automated systems that just shoot materials back to Earth in some sort of containers.

Humans have been doing it since we thought of clothing. Can't see why we can't start again.

.....No, not really.

It might take the local sealife and wildlife some time to recover, but the world ain't gonna end because of some oil spills. Now, if we had like....5 or ten going on at once, I might be a little worried. But as it stands now, eh.

Plastic can be made with alternatives that don't use oil taken from the ground.

For example, one can grow fungus, basically swamp scum, which produce chains of carbon. These can be processed for their oil, which burns as well as an other oil and has the same uses.

Well, no doubt I would prefer to drive a 1971 El Camino SS painted dark red with black racing stripes.

But they don't really make those anymore, and they're hard to find on people.

Nuclear is a viable alternative. :)
Sure nuclear powered car are literally impossible, but nuclear power is one of the cleanest ones. Literally, despite nuclear waste and the fact it's radioactive for 20,000 years, it's one of the cleanest.
Compared to an oil power plant, the amount of actual pollution, beside water vapor, is not even 30% of what an oil power plant generates.

They are a great source. Not the cheapest, but they pay for themselves fast. So, Nuclear is always an option.

However, I'm hoping we stop having oil leaks, because oil in the ocean is useless to us. And not healthy.
Also, Oil in Colorado is what, about twice what we need? All of Colorado is basically covered in shale oil.
And with the price of oil, it's almost cost effective for it.

What we need is for me to become President. :)
