China's largest reported oil spill emptied beaches along the Yellow Sea as its size doubled Wednesday, while cleanup efforts included straw mats and frazzled workers with little more than rubber gloves.

The oil had spread over 165 square miles (430 square kilometers) of water five days since a pipeline at the busy northeastern port exploded

One cleanup worker has drowned, his body coated in crude.

Since this is the first I'm hearing of it.. I'm wondering how long they thought they could keep it quiet?

I feel sorry for the guy who died.

The line in the linked article, "We don't have proper oil cleanup materials, so our workers are wearing rubber gloves and using chopsticks" had me ready to call shenanigans, but a quick google proved me wrong. Just more proof that we need to find alternatives to oil.

We have alternatives, the public needs to jump on board and quit having oil companies run our lives.

Earth is a tad more resilient than you give it credit, and despite all our failings, humanity has a knack for surviving.

China?! Provide help and comfort?!

Oh, and we won't be fighting over it, at least not huge battles. Peak oil is false. Earth continously breaks down matter into oil.

Yep, cheaper (long run), cleaner and you dont have to rely on other countries like you do with oil.

Like those virus's that are resistant to drugs.

Gotta give them credit, atleast they are doing something about it.

It would totally destroy some countries, though. The mid-east would go back to being ignored and a even bigger warzone if we didn't need their oil anymore.

Saudi Arabia....I guess the kings wouldn't be able to have so high a life anymore.

Something like that. And if some hippys are to be believed, humanity is the greatest virus of all.

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure.

gasp Agent Smith ?!?!

@Verlox : Maybe i was being a bit hopeful with the compensation thing, but this is gonna hit hard on the chinese economy, especially for the fisherman in that area.

Ah, but humanity is also able to make the concious choice to not consume, or continously consume less and less.

I agree, though, humanity are not like animals. Humanity is.....different. We are the masters.

Not that rare. You didn't hear from the near-catastrophic mishap near Australia, either. Gets all drowned out by the news about the Mexican Gulf oil leak. Nor did you ever actually get big news before when something like this happened, the reports just stop when the companies (and that's not only BP, all those people in the court hearing about the oil disaster pretending that their platforms would never crash like this were ly... err, putting things in very rosy words) get their oil disasters under control.

Did you know that there is a massive leak of natural gas in the North Sea that nobody even tried to close? You know, it's just a slight annoyance for the atmosphere that blows 300K tons of CO2 equivalent into the air each year. But there's no birds killed or beaches ruined, why close it? ^_^

Proof that we're not the same as animals. We are manipulators not adapters, which means that once we have a way off of this rock then we'll leave because we have the means to manipulate everything, we just haven't found out how yet. While a virus can jump from host to host quickly and at ease, we still cannot.

Atleast they are trying, not leaving it, they havent got half the [censored] BP has, also better to have straw mats abosrb the oil than to have some idiot dump garbage their, or there is always that stuff they used to stop the oil that was apparently more toxic than the oil...

I just hope we can go back to horse and buggies/wagons/carts/ect. Mix that with bikes and we'd have a good way of local trasportation.

Now we need to find a new way to make airplane fuel for long trips. Cause dammit, I ain't goin' on no ocean!

^If you're trying to say that flying is safer than boat riding.. lol. At least on a boat you have a chance to get off it. In a plane, you're SOL.

Going nuclear is out of the question, and solar only works in the daytime ;p.

Not true! I read a story of the solar plane storing enough energy in the day to fly all night long without the sun.
