Here they come !

So since much kicking and punching of my computer I've managed to get it working along with a friend. Its running windows XP and I hope this is enough to run Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Tactics.
So since their on their way here for next week how differently would I need to play them compared to Fallout 3 and NV ?
I would normal go for Speech, Lockpick and Guns/Melee in that order would the roles need to be reversed if I wanted to survive ?
And since I'm on PC, is there any mods I can use for fun like the ones in Faloout 3 and NV or are the games simply too old to have any ?
Any tips on this would be great since I'm looking foward to playing these :D

I'd recommend getting Killap's unofficial patch... You'll also see a Restoration Mod that he's done, but I'd recommend completing it Vanilla first as it adds some areas inspired by those that were cut and they're not quite up to the usual standard (even though they're still reasonably good)

Fallout 1 is really simple no mods, not really close to Fallout 3. I tagged small guns, speech, and don't remember the third, repair science and lockpick are not nearly as useful as Fallout 3/NV. Also you will have random encounters that may become annoying so a skill called outdoorsman might help.

Fallout 2 has several mods that help gameplay or make some things better. Same with FO 1 though, considerably less science, lockpick, and repair. Just play Fallout 1, and get use to everything, and that should help in Fallout 2.

Also remember that energy weapons are found late in game and are incredibly good compared to Fallout 3/NV.

Outdoorsman, is that like Survival or something ?
And EW that will actually impress and wow me, cool :P

So I'll be playing F1 > Tactics > F2 at least I think thats the order they go.

Outdoorsmen affects the rate of random encounters and gives you the choice to detect them and decide whether to avoid them or not.

Chronologically yes.

No, it is a node map, so when you move it shows a little triangle moving across the map. At any point an encounter with enemies, caravans or others will occur. With high outdoorsman skill you have a higher chance to skip an encounter.

Playing them in that order is chronological, but not how they were released. I played and still playing Fallout 2 right after 1 as it is its sequel.

FO1 was designed for a computer with sixteen megabytes ram, and a 90MHz cpu ~the original game even shipped with a DOS version. (DOS is from 20 years ago).
Any version of Windows from Win95 up can run Fallout (even Windows NT 3.5 with SP3), so no worries about if it will run; but you will want Killap's patch to make Fallout play nice with modern video cards (and add major bug fixes).

What? Lockpick is an incredibly useful skill in both Fallout 1 and 2.

Cheers for the nugget of knowledge :)
Major bug fixes, that sounds almost worrying, what kinda bugs would I be looking at pre-mod ?

Killap (Paul, he said in a recent interview), has been working on the patch for over five years, and mentions that it corrects over 1,000 bugs; Obviously not all game-breaking ones.

One patch corrects the game as shipped, the other ~the Restoration patch, (AFAIK, fixes the bugs and) restores and makes functional various locations and NPCs that were intended to be in the game at one time or another, but for whatever reason were cut from the game prior to shipping.

What? Lockpick is an incredibly useful skill in both Fallout 1 and 2.

I didn't find it that useful, there were a couple times where I thought "damn should have put skills in lockpick" but then I moved on. Fallout 3/NV seem to use it a lot more. Anyways, I didn't say useless, I said not as useful as Fallout 3/NV.

Well yeah you can get by without it but you can do the same in Fallout 3/NV. There's a lot of locked containers/rooms in Fallout 1/2 almost none of which have keys or alternate ways of opening them.

You don't need it but you certainly get a lot of additional loot and opportunities from having it. Small Guns/Speech/Lockpick are the most useful skills in the originals IMO.

So sticking with my orignal skills but with guns taken priority over speech, easy done, and get that mod when the games arrive if their bugs are noticably annoying :D

I'd go with Speech. I often play without ever tagging small guns.

I installed them on my laptop, now realise they need to go on the PC because that has my mouse...touchpad was terrible
But theres a minor problem with the graphics, like the Overseer are the start had yellow, white pixelised lines popping around his face and the Vault was all rainbow coloured and I know that no vault is that good looking.
Is there a patch for this problem ?

You might get a rpblem with lots of e ncounters when travling on the map. There is a fix to this by changing som number in a file, but dont remeber which one.
People at the no mutants allowed forums might be able to help you.

Yeah there on disc, I assume they don't run automatically and I need to run/install the patch ?

When you install it should show options to what you want to install. Next to Fallout 1/2/tactics there should be a + click that and it will give you options to extra stuff that came with it, including patches.
