Here is a Thought: Why are there no Golf Courses?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 8:26 am

Over the weekend I was watching the Golf Channel and I got to thinking about why there are no golf courses depicted in any of the Fallout games?!? In fact, the only sports arena is a baseball or softball field in Fallout New Vegas. Not that it is important. I was just curious. Incidentally, I am not a golfer per se, but my brother and father were avid golfers. I am more of a spectator. Although, I was baseball/softball pitcher in my youth.

A golf course takes a lot to maintain. After 200 years without constant upkeep it would probably look like any other field.

I think a putt-putt golf course would be a really cool mini-game. :D

Those pools of irridiated water scattered all around the DC area. Those are the golf courses.

Yeah it was covered by an army but still there. Fallout I believe emphasizes baseball as it is considered the American past time, which is why you see it everywhere as opposed to other sports.

I suppose that depends, a 9 hole or an 18 hole.

Because if you take the scope of the character and game space, if you made a full on 18 hole golf course, in proportion to the player character, you would have an area as big as the DC Ruins area if not bigger in scale.

Probably weren't included because too big, and there were more interesting things to use the game space for.

Because

1. golf courses take a lot of land and maintenance to maintain. Lets assume you don't care about the grass part because hey its a wasteland. You still would have to have a huge amount of land that you will need to fence off and protect against any ne'er-do-wells. (ie: raiders and robbers) Furthermore, you will have to hire people to take care of and protect all this land and your customers. Even a 9 hole course is too much to guard for 1 person. Plus, putting is more complicated than you would think. You need SMOOTH or FLAT ground for a ball to be putted. You can't just put a ball with tons of divots, dips, potholes, and other uneven and rocky grounds that would be in the wasteland. That's why putting greens are so well maintained and built. And this is all assuming that you CAN get your hands on some pre-war clubs and balls or even manufacture new ones (which would svck).

Even if you had all of that taken care of.. Lets say you had barbed fences with auto turrets guarding the entire perimeter, you had a staff, and kept the land maintained, and you had plenty of balls and clubs, why would anyone come and pay you for this? Most people are trying to SURVIVE, even if they did have time for such luxury, all of those resources (manpower, equipment, autoturrets, fences) are better spent on rebuilding society.

Baseball is an easy and cheap sport to make. You need a field, a ball, and a bat. You can make bases out of anything and even catch the ball with your hands if you needed to. (wouldn't recommend it though) But another reason baseball is mentioned more is that it is America's favorite past time. It fits the 50's theme quite nicely even though golf was around at that time as well

2. If you mean why weren't they mentioned at all. Camp Golf in New Vegas was a golf course.

Well I always thought not finding a tennis court anywhere was even wierder. I get AstroTurf not being a part of the fallout lore technologically.

But tennis courts--besides requiring a lot smaller footprint--historically had clay and grass courts have been around since 1920s

My theory for omissions like this is that since fallout represents the nostalgic 1950s era, and given the stagnant nature of this 50s culture (while technology continued to evolve until 2077) that the sports you logically encounter would be the favorite national pastime ones. Like baseball and football.

As I understand it Bethesda compress distance about 3:1,

so a Fallout golf course would either be for very weak golfers, or have only 3 or 6 holes -

in short, it would be a bit odd as it would call out the liberties being taken with scale..

Because in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, the land that might have been used for a golf course in the pre-war era would be better utilized by putting almost anything else on it. Golf would definitely not be a priority.

Like it was stated it would take quite a bit of land for a golf course and it also take a lot of effort to maintain a golf course. There would not be much of a need for a golf course since most people are looking to survive and looking for food. Likely the golf course would be changed to farmland or used by Brahman.

There was Camp Golf in New Vegas.

There was at least one baseball diamond in Fallout 3

Too fragile and generic to spot without signage. Those flimsy flagpoles showing where the holes are probably wouldn't withstand a few decades sitting around outside, especially with scavangers who could utilize them for spears or something else. Also, golf courses tend to be mostly open fields. What is the wasteland mostly comprised of? Empty fields.

Exactly. A golf course just being a large amount of land with woods and grass after 200 years will just look like a large area with woods and grass, or dead grass and dead trees,

* going on a mutant-shooting safari is more fun

* most clubs have been repurposed as melee weapons

* no corporate executives making deals on the fairway means less financial incentive to learn the game

Edit to add:

* the devs don't play golf

I fully expect this to happen:

Howard: FORE!

Codsworth: As I live and breathe! Mr. Howard, that was magnificent!

Human Companion: o_O THIS is how you all kept entertained before the Great War? I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but boy am I glad that war got rid of this god-awful...whatever this is. Gonna go kill some muties over by Lexington now. Bye.

It's because Bill Murray wasn't there to keep the molerats from tearing up the course. :)

Driver Nephi was actually a holy prophet trying to spread the gospel of golf to the people of the wasteland.

Who are the real monsters?

You're right, there was a baseball field in Fo3 & through ya sniper scope you could watch two raiders having a game which i thought was excellent attention to detail. They attack if you approach them though.
