There are no reasons not to use it. It's a very simple install. Also, when developers compile scripts with obse in use, even if no obse functions are used, obse is required to play the mod. I've played a few mods where it never said I had to use obse, but it turns out I did

You should let the author know in that case. The compile = require thing was only added in v18, and I thought it was "if you compile a script that uses OBSE, but no OBSE v18 features, it will still require v18, but if you compile a script that doesn't use OBSE at all, it still won't need OBSE". I could be wrong though. Anyway, the point is that it being a newish thing and a bit misunderstood (at least for me) means that it may be that the author just didn't know, and if you tell them, they can fix that.

On topic though, there's no reason to have OBSE installed if you don't use it. Despite the 'it doesn't do any harm' side of things, if you don't use any mods that require it, there's no point having it. When you do install such a mod, you can then grab the latest version and install that. It's not like you can forget, since a mod should definitely mention the requirement in its readme.

OBSE is a fantastic resource, and a great many brilliant mods rely on it. I couldn't play the game I want without it, for sure. However, contrary to opinions expressed above, it's not a requirement for a satisfactory game. It is perfectly possible to have a game unreliant on OBSE that still works how you want it, and it's perfectly possible to create great mods without requiring it (ie. RGO, last time I checked).

Uhm. Midas Magic doesn't require OBSE. :whistling:

You, sir, are absolutely correct! :cookie:

I saw someone else post it here and didn't even think twice about it. I should have known better, though; I originally chose Midas Magic and LAME for magic overhauls b/c they didn't require OBSE. Now I wouldn't care so much, though. ;)

I disagree with that. There's no reason not to have it, it's a tiny download and getting OBSE as soon as possible means you won't have to worry about what you can download and can't. May as well get it as soon as possible.

This is absolutely, positively, 100% false. Not even remotely true.

That's a somewhat odd way at looking at it IMO - then you might as well install Screen Effects, Pluggy, You Are Here etc. "as soon as possible" for the same reasons. I don't quite see the upside of it.

It just means you don't have to worry about what you can download. Each to their own I guess, it doesn't really make a difference either way (exept You Are Here could have a tiny effect on your CPU but I doubt it).

It looks as though this thing has been beaten to death already, but I'd say this: if there is a mod you really want to install that requires OBSE, then install it. Until then, don't install it.

Which good mods use it?

Most of them. Almost all of the worthwhile mods out there will use OBSE. Obviously you're quite new to mods if the only one you've come across so far is Map Marker Overhaul. There are hundreds of them out there and they tend to be the best ones. BTW, speaking of Map Marker Overhaul, you should also look at his Enhanced Economy. In fact all of his mods are worth having IMO. And I'm pretty sure they all use OBSE.

The only time I have hesitated installing OBSE was during the beta phases of OBSE18. Lots of trouble there, so I stuck with 17 til 18 went final. Other than that, I've been using it since OBSE13, and at the time, not a lot of mods I used required OBSE.

A mod that does not make any real change other then for sorting quests which in my opinion is a Vast improvment is Quest Log manager. I also use Enhanced Ecconomy you can make adjustments to the the amount of money you could make (So as hard or easy as you want) it can put taxes on the houses you buy ingame. Map marker Overhaul also is a improvment on the ingame system label sites for if you have been there. None of the 3 affect game ballance unless you want them to and only Enhance ecconomy comes close.

My reasoning for not downloading it as part of a 'basic modded Oblivion setup' is that if you don't use it at all, then there is the chance that you completely forget about it, and so you then download a mod that requires a newer version than what you've got, but you just see the 'OBSE' requirement and think 'OK, I've got that' leading to problems. It happens disturbingly often.

But in the end, yes, it's just a case of personal preference.

In my opinion obse is just as vital as uop, it itself is reason enough to install it.
If you are really looking for a great mod that uses obse, you have already found it.
The best mod for obse is obviously oblivion, they'll probably bann me now XD.

also
Chong Li, Arthmoor, Brumbek, & WrinklyNinja's All Natural
Duke Patrick's Combat Archery
shadeMe's Put it in its Place - Enhanced Grabbing
Skycaptain's Deadly Reflex - Combat Moves
Strategy Master's Drop Lit Torches
XMarksTheSpot & Ismelda's Animated Window Lighting System and Chimneys

I've used OBSE since v13.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I genuinely have no idea which mods require OBSE because I have it already. It's not an issue so I don't think about it.

Obviously I know that the OBSE plugins I use require OBSE! These are
Fastexit 2
Oblivion Stutter Remover
Ely's Universal Silent Voice
a level uncapper (can 't remember exact name)
Change Console Key
