Hey that's an Irish Wolfhound

I've seen this picture several times before but I never really noticed the dog in the picture. The other day I saw it in a video interview and the camera sort of panned in on it and it finally clicked. That dog is an Irish Wolfhound. Awesome! Compare to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_wolfhound

The NPC it appears to be walking with looks like a uniformed guard so perhaps the guard now patrols with dogs. Criminals beware, the Irish Wolfhound is a big dog. Standing on its hind legs it can be over seven feet tall. I would not like to be tackled by that beast.

I just thought this was cool. I don't expect to blow anyone's mind with this revelation. I just think wolfhounds are cool.

Let's be honest, they have trees native to Europe in Oblivion. Not to mention all the other real world plant species that were in the game.

Dogs are fair game.

Hmm I never really looked at this particular screenshot, I noticed something else. Is that guard wearing Roman-esque armour or what? :celebration:

If any other Earth-dog can exist in Nirn, an Irish wolfhound makes just as much sense, even though the name happens to mention a place on Earth.

Anyway, that doesn't look too much like an Irish wolfhound to me. The colouring is similar, but I'm not sure we can be certain.

It wasn't just the coloring that tipped me off. The general shape of the head, its height, the length of the legs compared to the body, lots of factors brought me to this conclusion. Now a direct question; why doesn't it look like an Irish Wolfhound to you? You didn't elaborate on your statement and I am interested to hear your explanation.

Bethesda's games and some aspects of the games are based from most of their employee's homeland. which is in Europe if believe?

You know what I really love about this shot?
Even though I know in my heart of hearts that this is actually a screenshot, I love how it looks like a watercolor painting. This fascinates me. I know some people love photo-realism in their games, but i prefer an element of artistry. If the game has that somewhat surreal feel to it, I'll be in love with every minute of the experience.

I'm not sure how else to explain it.

Yeah when that screenshot was first revealed a lot of people speculated that was the revamped legion armor. Hopefully we'll get tower shields and gladii.

I can't remember Ireland in LotR.

There were parts of LotR that I could tell were influenced by Irish mythology and it's ideals, off the top of my head I can't remember them but while reading the books I remember seeing influences, but this is a TES Forum let's keep it that way shall we :) Sorry if I sounded harsh there

You know the term Breton actually means a person from Brittany, France? And Nord means a person from Norway?

A distinct possibility. The deerhound's neck looks longer than the wolfhound's, but the picture doesn't give a good enough angle to tell.

Very off-topic but I just had to mention it:

I seriously can't believe I've never noticed this before. But look at the clipping on our friend Dovahkhiin: http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim/ss-015.jpg

Irish wolfhounds were popular in Norway(and rest of scandinavia). The vikings often brought them with them home and gave them to earls, kings, Herser and other powerfull men. They were looked on as fierce guard-dogs. Norwegian king Olav Tryggvasson had a irish wolfhound named Vige :).

Also, in Nj?ls saga:

"Han vil gj? mot hver den som han vet er din uvenn, men aldri mot dine venner, for han ser det p? hvert menneske om han vil deg vel eller ikke. Denne hunden heter Samr"
translation: "He(the dog) will bark at everyone who is not your friend, but never at your friends, because he can sense if a human wish you harm or not. This dog is named Samr"
