High price on Steam and no extras for pre-purchase?

Post » Tue Aug 16, 2011 5:31 pm

Im really disapointed with u guys from Bethesda.

A lot of games have at least 1 extra for pre-purchase. RAGE have 4 items and free content on future for pre-purchase, Dead Island have 1 item and a DLC, Deus Ex a lot of stuff on Augmented Edition, Heroes VI have acess to Beta and some items. These are only some examples, cause basically all new releases have some kind of extra, except Skyrim.

In my opinion, $59 is too much for a game with no extras and non-box version. So whats the point of pre-purchase the game now if theres is no benefits?! Whats the purpose of pre-purchase?!
I'm really interested in buy this game, but u really need to do something about this. Give us some extras or lower the price cause $59 is a bit overpriced.

I saw an interview to PSM3 where Todd Howard said: "I think games are just too expensive. I do think industry-wide we would benefit from more games out at $19 or $29. I would try more games. Because I’m not going to try a game for $60. It’s a tough decision. That’s why people read reviews and previews, because it’s not only a money decision, it’s a time-investment decision. It’s not like going to a movie.”

I completely agree with what he said, and i think now is the time to put into practice.

If you guys agree with my opinion, please reply to this topic and tell ur opinion and what kind of extra do you like to get.

It would be nice to receive some sort of pre-order incentive. And NOT an ingame item, or extra content. Something more along the lines of a large detailed digital map, or maybe some sort of digital art package.

I'm going to pre-order either way.

I absolutely agree, for a digital copy to be pushing $60 with no preorder benefits, there's not much reason to buy it through steam, period. Even if you're using steam as your game catalog, you can always add it to your library (it's not a steamworks title, but you can still manually add .exe's into your library). I'm personally grabbing it from Amazon for release date delivery of a physical copy.

And while there's not much use in crying over spilled milk, I remember the "good ol' days" when physical copies retailed at $40 and came with expansive manuals. In color!!!!! Starsiege, Independence Wars (Deluxe), and Homeworld were all favorites of mine for including massive tomes of knowledge (+5). Starsiege in particular had a 50+ page manual AND a giant color Universe Compendium with back story and pseudo-scientific explanations to the universe. *sigh* those were the days...

$60 is standard price for a game, what are you mad about? Some people perfer digital copies for whatever reason (usually convenience with regards to where they live), and some people like physical copies. Including extras with the phyical copies is to encourage publishers to not go digital only.

We are talking about TES here
What kind of extra items do you want for Steam version game?
Some ingame items?
Creation Kit & Mods should be more than enough

See my earlier post. $60 has only recently become standard, and only VERY recently on the PC platform. And suffice to say, NO, the "extras" (lol at an ingame map now being considered an "extra") coming in physical copiers are not to stop digital distribution.

There's really no reason why a digital copy should be at the same retail price as a standard copy, considering the profit margins on digital vs. physical distribution. This is generally why you receive extra bonuses with digital distributions to make up for the fact you are not receiving a digital copy.

EDIT: @ Booty: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starsiege (which was the precursor to Tribes, and the sequel to Earthseige I ['94] and II ['95]) came out in '99, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-War_%28Independence_War%29 came out in '97, and was re-released with the expansion in '99. Homeworld, of course, was also released in '99. '99 was a particularly good gaming year for me.

PC games are nicer then console ones so i don't mind that they cost the same amount, if they are high-end production games like skyrim. What annoyed me about steam pre-order is that i wouldn't get a map, and instead, would get a crappy hat for tf2. God that game used to be so good, and now, just, god.

It's interesting to note that $40 in 1994 dollars equals $60.92 in 2011 dollars.

I understand your point of view, but let's anolyze:

Skyrim on Steam (pre-purchase): price = $59; non-box version; no extras
Im pretty sure Skyrim will be epic and probably one of best games of this year if not GOTY, but what the advantage of pre-purchasing now? You pay now, get the game only 3 months later, have no benefits and maybe will pay higher than day-release cause there may be promotions.

Obs: Deus Ex and Dead island are two AAA games and are priced at $49 and have extras.

Its like "Bulwark' said... were only asking for an incentive for pre-order.

Well this is THE ELDER SCROLLS we are talking about here. If it was any other game then yes I would say that 60$ is a little expensive, (By 10 dollars). 60 dollars could never convince me NOT to buy a Elder Scrolls game.

I don't expect games to be immune to the price increases that every other product or service goes through. I am fine with the cost.

Bethesda is doing the same thing as Actvision. They know they can increase the price and get away with it. There's absolutely no need for the $10 price increase for the PC version, and they know that. Oh well. Their main priority is to make money. And there really is no justifying it. The whole 'BUT IT'S TES' is [censored]. It's pure greed. Simple as that.

Funny how you quoted Todd Howard on that, but missed out the part conveniently where he thinks massive games such as Skyrim are undoubtedly worth $60.

Console versions are also $60, I fail to see what the problem is. Economy of scale means because console versions will sell better there's no need to sell them for $70.

The reason that console games sell at $60 this gen is because microsoft and sony demanded a $10 royalty fee from publishers on every game. On pc, there is no one company that controls the entire infrastructure so the extra $10 is entirely pocketed by the publisher. Activision tested this out with CoD and people still bought it. Now other companies are catching on and are raising prices. The other thing is that, at retail a publisher only really makes around $30 off of every game sale whereas on digital distribution, there are no shipping costs or the like and therefore they pocket the entire $50, now $60, cost. When you take this into account, the fact that it costs so much is ridiculous but people are svckers and will still buy it because they see a $10 difference as "not too bad." Also, you publishers should raise the cost of games to $65 instead of $60.
