High res monitor

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 6:02 am

Greetings to elderly and green-horn adventurers alike!

Searching the forums was not successful, - neither title, nor tag search - so rather asking you.

topic 1:
Would a high resolution monitor - possibly a 21,5", 1080p, LED, IPS-paneled - show crisper, more believable Oblivion then my current 1280×1024 display?

I doubt it, as the pixel pitch remains almost constant when pairing various monitor sizes and resolutions.
Therefore, possibly only the wider screen view and perhaps color enhancement (IPS) could be observed.

Anyway, aiming for the lowest pixel pitch, I planned to choose the smallest sized 1080p-capable monitor, as
I had the most photo-realistic experience on a 14"-15" CRT with 1280x1024, at an extremely low refresh rate - so head ache was granted - , and would desperately like to realize it again (now with head unaffected) !

topic 2:
Would an ATI HD 5770 1GB be suitable for displaying 1080p at tolerable FPS drop? How much drop is to be estimated? Non-modded I had about 70 FPS exterior.

topic 3:
Do you prefer widescreen for Oblivion, and which ratio, 16:9 or 16:10 ? Isn't 16:9 too wide and unrealistic looking?

topic 4:
Could a widesceen monitor switch back to normal 5:4 or 4:3 ratio without looking too ugly?

topic 5:
Why 1080p is called Full HD - thus seemingly being a mystic border in resolution specturm?
Needing user impressions as simple googling and youtubing couldnt reveal it....As I say, again, pixel pitch is near the same...

topic 6:
Do LED and IPS technology show any beneficial visual or other effects ( I know power consumption is lowered, but colors are really nicer) ?
----
So thats the end,
and if you know sg on this matter, would be fine to hear about it.
Byte!

1: Possible. Would depend on the setup and mods.
2: Yes. Exterior of max 60 FPS as LCD screens are capped at a 60 Hz refresh rate (or a multiple of 60).
3: Personally, I prefer a 16:10 monitor because of the extra height. I get more real estate that way to work with. Realism has nothing to do with it for me, it's all about space. However, 16:10 monitors are not made as much as they used to and are expensive as hell...
4: Yes, you'll have black bars though.
5: HD is defined as the point at which visuals begin to look like they do in the real world on a decently sized screen (~46 inches or so) at a decent distance from it (~5-7 feet or so). These values change with screen size, but that's the gist of it. 720p was really one of the first HD standards, and is still called HD. 720p is 1280 x 720 pixels. 1080p is also HD, but things look even better as the resolution is 1920 x 1080. The p is progressive scan as apposed to interlace. The full means that you have greater picture quality compared to 720p.
6: Definitely. LED gives more dynamic lighting as there are many lights behind the panel instead of just a single bulb and IPS is a screen type that allows for, generally, sharper images.

On that matter, I recommend either an Asus or a Samsung monitor of that type. Bit pricey, but your eyes will thank you.

Also, CRTs aren't as good as LCD screens due to how they function.

I started playing Oblivion on a 24 inch CRT, then moved to a 22 inch LCD flat panel. The difference was incredible. The colors are so much brighter on the LCD, in fact the entire world is brighter and easier to see. The only downside I found to the LCD is that if do not use its native resolution (1920 x 1080), things looks a little fuzzy, like a picture taken with a soft focus. Thankfully Oblivion goes up that high in resolution, so it is no problem. But it is a performance hit. In spite of that, I have no regrets about going to the LCD, except that I wish I had done so sooner! I still have the CRT, but only so my cat can sleep on it.

I personally use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236079screens to game on and they are a great experience. A single screen looks great. I personally say 23-24" is the sweet spot for 1920x1080 monitors right now.

I'd agree --- figure PC programmers design the screens for 96 DPI so the ideal size for a 1920 x 1080 resolution would be 1920/96 by 1080/96 or 20 x 11.25 inches and since a^2 + b^2 = c^2 that would translate to 20^2 + 11.25^2 = 526.562 and the square root of 526 is approx 23 (22.9646) so a 22 - 24 inch screen would be the best for displaying the game screen as close to what it was programmed to look like using a 1920x1080 resolution.

I have the ASUS VW246H at home. I love the picture. I'm using a http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004KCI80I/ref=wms_ohs_product at school, which I bought to connect to my PS3 and serve as a larger screen to hook my laptop up to, it's not nearly as nice for playing games, unless PS3 games just look more stretched in general. I felt like I could see the pixels to well or something. It's nice to have the bigger screen for watching netflix and splitting the screen when programming though. :L

I'm using a 22" Samsung 1920 * 1080 HD monitor and yes vanilla oblivion does look lovely but as with many things in Oblivion it will look EVEN BETTER with some intelligently chosen mods or really terrible if you get it wrong.

Thanx D.soul, and everybody,

seems you're of the friendly & helpful adventurer type.

Still I am not convinced on this matter - as, in addition to cats, who also prefer CRTs - pixel pitch is about 0.21mm on them, instead of 0.25-29mm as on LCDs.

Perhaps I should wait for this: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_20111218/ai_n58511054/

Reading things like these also makes me wonder: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/opinion/1652880/time-ditch-awful-hd-1080p-widescreens

Perhaps a side-quest to a monitor shop will reveal the truth in front of my eyes..

CRTs do not give as good of colors as LCDs. Do not use pixel pitch as the comparing factor here, as the technology is entirely different. LCD screens will look better than a CRT which seemingly has better specs. This is due to how they function. Overall, CRTs are inferior to LCDs in basically every way. I went from a CRT to an LCD when my CRT died on me, and the LCD was much better. Then the bulb in my LCD died, it was a cheap one anyways, so I got an LED one. The LED monitor may not be 16:10 but it displays things way better than my previous two monitors. Go with the LED monitor, is what I'm saying here. The quality is just so much better.

Thanx to everybody for giving info.

Having seen some newer LCDs at a shop, I am convinced to change for a nice 1080p LCD (21,5", e-IPS, w-Led, low pixel pitch: 0.25mm, standard gamut).
Possibly it would be a Dell U2212HM, having a good review at TftCentral http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2212hm.htm
Other brands with these parms:LG and HP.

But how much FPS drop is to be estimated in Oblivion as at 1280x1024 the average FPS is only 30 with mods, how less would it be at 1080p?
(Wielding: Athlon 2 x2 3 Ghz, ATI 5770 1 GB, 4 GB Ram, Win XP 64)

thanx if you know sg.

Personally, I'd go with the LG over the Dell and HP. But that's me.

Not enough for you to really notice it, really. If it was a jump to 2500 or something, then you'd notice it. But I don't think you'll notice it enough here.
