Hiring companions?

Post » Wed Sep 21, 2011 1:27 am

I read that in skyrim some quest givers or characters will accompany you to some quests. it's a great idea. i love the notion that there is another character to follow you and give a small sense of friendship.
alas, these companions are likely to leave as soon as the quest ends and any artificial emotional connection i might have with them will go as well.

are there any other ways to get a character to follow and help you on your journey? hiring mercs from guilds or taverns maybe?
having friends after quests that will follow you whenever u want if u just complete their quests?

there were great mods for OB to have companions that can also take orders like follow, stop, do not engage, use bows only, etc etc. i wonder if u could give your companions any type of orders or directions.

I remember a comment from Todd regarding wives/husbands and that they can cook a meal for you each day, as well as accompany you on your adventures. Whether they add much to a fight or not I don't know. That being said, at least it's another way that people can join you on a more permanent basis. I don't have specifics, but I would guess that if that's the case, there would have to be ways to gain other, full time companions, besides someone who may join only as long as a particular quest lasts.

I'm quite sceptical about companions. In theory it's a great idea, but not many games get it right - usually companions are much more of a hindrance than a help, and then they die pretty much immediately anyway!

Hopefully like the Fallout system where you can give them commands and they stay with you.

And if there's an Adoring fan companion in Skyrim I think it would be best if we just stay friends.

Even if they die quickly, they can serve you as a pretty good distraction, especially from dragons ;). I haven't heard much about the companion system in Skyrim, hopefully we hear something more about it before the game comes out, if not I'll be happy to see how well it works on my own in the game :)

 hey,

i'm not sure whether companions will leave your side once a quest is complete, i didn't hear anyone say that.

what i did in oblivion was create my own gang { the septim 6ix }.
i did this without mods by going to mazoga the orc half completing her quest, then i used the "follow me". went and did the jermaine
brothers' quest and did the same { "follow me" }. so it was myself, mazoga, and the jermains.
i went to kvatch with them and picked up martin, had an epic battle there and then we travelled chorrol and got jauffre.

after that i had my gang and we travelled the length and breath of cyrodill several times doing minor quests and just general
adventuring.

FOR SKYRIM, i will hire a companion and keep doing so, also i think that there will be people that will always follow you.however,
is far as i know we're only allowed one at a time. if this is the case then i will get a 'feel' for the game in my 1st playthrough.
for my second one i will know where to go to get more companions that have the "follow me" option and do what i did in
oblivion.

this is just my take on this subject, it worked very well the last time.

Yay for meat shields! :hugs:

I've never really had good experiences with companions, and I agree with above that most games just don't quite get it right. I'd rather work solo and have a slightly harder time at things, than have to babysit a useless companion.

if companions, once fallen, are marked on the map and can be revived with potions or spells than i think they are a very welcomed addition.
i would hate it if the companions would constantly die, but this CAN be remedies if programmed right.
i dont want to think of my companions as meat shields. the purpose of having them around is that i will feel like im travelling with a friend.

and what kinda of a friend would I be if i go like "hey, mate. see these bandits? go bugger then till you're dead. i'll pick up the left overs and the gold. see you in the next life."

I remember reading that you be able to hire mercenaries to fight for you.
No emotional attachment, just business. This way is easier to see them dying. :obliviongate:

Boone takes all the fun from playing. He kills everything that moves. Shoots first and asks later.

This is the first TES game with love interests. Immediately taking the step towards "hiring companions" is going a bit overboard don't you think? Yeah, that's right, I know exactly what you mean with "emotional connection".
