Hist

So, what do you think the Hist is? It is obviously a tree, but how can it foresee things such as the oblivion crisis? Are they all connected? What about the one in Oblicion? Are they Ehlnofey?

Hist is Hyst. Just Hyst.

Hyst comes from outside. Hyst persysts. Hyst resysts. Hyst is Hist. Outside, now in.

According to the Anuad, the Hist are to the Argonians as the Elnofey are to all the other mortal races. There is also speculation that the Tscaeci also have a relationship to the Hist... but this is purely based on an asserted similarity between the Tsaeci creation myth and Argonian beliefs.

In other words, Hist are explicitly NOT Ehlnofey. They are the only things that are Not Ehlnofey.

My take: they are a thoroughly alien life form. They are, in fact, sentient trees, with a nature more akin to the original EtAda, neither Mortal nor Immortal, but something else entirely, which can be very roughly but highly misleadingly described as "something in between". The Argonians, I believe, exist to enable the Hist to relate to the descendants of the Ehlnofey. (I base this mostly off the words of Dreekius, bartender of Stro's M'kai during the life of Cyrus the Redguard.)

A few things I remember from the novels.

1) Hist are from another plane(t) of existence.

2) The Hist are related somehow to the trees found on the chunk of Clavicus Vile's realm, Umbriel. These trees are also not native to CV's realm.

3) The Hist have a single consciousness or hive mind. On occasion, a Hist will go rogue and create a separate identity.

4) The Hist (and the Argonians) have a language very alien to mer or men.

5) The Hist (and Argonians) see the flow of time completely different than other races, almost non-linear. This is why their language is really odd.

6) The Hist have a kind of telepathic link with Argonians and can broadcast orders to them.

Actually, they're possibly the most native life-form on Nirn. The Ehlnofey came from the Twelve Worlds of Creation, and the Hist were already here covering the whole planet.

It actually brings up a rather interesting correlation. The Hist and dragons were here first, and according to KINMUNE, Hist and dragons don't like each other and tended to fight. Then the Old Ehlnofey and Wandering Ehlnofey came, and themselves started fighting. The Hist seem to be aligned with Lorkhan (Sithis) like men/Wandering Ehlnofey, while the dragons are more aligned with Akatosh/Auriel/Alduin like mer/Old Ehlnofey. Also, both the Hist and dragons see time in a way different to mortals.

I get the vague impression that the Hist aren't just trees, and are actually mostly out of Phase with the rest of the Arubis. Consider that they only respect the existence of Sithis, and will weaponize 16th-dimensional mathematics. Perhaps they are anologous to a particle which doesn't react to gravity or electromagnetism or the weak nuclear force, but is instead governed by the strong nuclear force, the purple nuclear force, the Force, and many other such principles which do not govern the normal "stuff" of the world. The Hist are a then a bridge between the normal Arubis and some other, stranger realm.

[/speculation]

I suppose then they have a slight gravitational pull on magickatons, and cover 23% of Aurbis.
