So, for a final project in my history class, we have to study a revolution. I chose the Chinese Revolution of 1949, and I, for the life of me, cannot find a historic battle. I don't want to pick some run-of-the-mill battle to talk about in my presentation, but since google won't help me, I was hoping you could

Why not try the wiki if google is not helping or, what we use to do in the old days is go outside and actually go to the public Library or the Library in school?

Oh yeah, most of us forumites were there at the time, weren't we guys? We'll tell you all about it! :P

Are you allowed to change topics? If you had chosen the Industrial Revolution, I would have been able to help you, or even the Cuban Revolution. What I would suggest is, don't use Google, go to a library and read up. Stick to the old fashion ways. It helps sometimes. Only use Google to, perhaps gain a little extra edge.

Shouldn't there be quite a large cache of resources available at the school as well as the enormous amount on the internet to aid your research? I would discuss their Civil War as uprisings interest me, but I kinda have this feeling I'd be doing your work for you.

What I'd like to know is what a "run-of-the-mill battle" is. . .

Captain: Men, let's try and keep this battle relatively simple, we don't want it to be too spectacular or they'll make a movie on it in a couple of decades and have Jet Li playing me. I don't want Jet Li playing me.

Soldier 1: I do!

Soldier 2: No one cares what you want.

Soldier 1: Can I at least be a little epic?

Captain: No.

Soldier 1: But why not?

Captain: Then it will get too popularized and it would be too easy for pandaman77 to do his project.

Soldier 2: *sniggers* pandaman77 *sniggers*

Captain: Right men, to arms!

Soldier 1: Madness? THIS IS- !

Captain and Soldier 2: Shutup!

Sadly I don't know much about the Chinese civil war, but my google-fu seems to be much better than yours. Go to your library and see if you can find the following books, they should help you out:

http://books.google.nl/books?id=Ck6IumJLdPkC&printsec=frontcover&dq=chinese+civil+war&hl=nl&ei=i_ToTc_vHMvpOf_SpZkB&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CDAQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q&f=false

The book by Westad seems to be exactly what you're looking for.

And always remember when doing any school project, that Google Books is your dearest friend.

Revolutions, in general, do not evolve around wars. Revolutions are a political shift in power, essentially a coup d'etat by commoners. Choosing a 'battle' would be like trying to define your home state of Idaho using only the street you live in as an example. It is much much more than that.

My Chinese history is not my strong suite so I'll use the French Revolution as my example. Just say I wanted to pick one particular battle, not an entire campaign, not one of the many Constitutions or the Great Terror or any of the famous leaders, but a battle. In the period between 1789 and 1801, I would have to choose the Battle of Valmy. Why? It was the first time conscripted troops representing a nation fought and stopped cold the combined armies of the First Coalition. The political implications and processes which resulted from the French victory were profound. It gave Paris the stones to finally abolish the monarchy and establish the First French Republic. From the strict military point of view, it enarmoured the conscripts with a victory - even though most of the action was fought by former veterans and regulars of the line. It helped establish the French Gribeauval gun system as superior, it bolstered the use of skirmishers in the prelude to battle (something quite often used since the Roman times but largely forgotten until they started experimenting with it again in the early 1700s) and saw the first use of observation balloons on the field of battle. The battle itself was not anything ground breaking of special.

But here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_battles#1949 - Maybe that'll help.

Well apart from the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

Obviously, the people of the British Isles never really cared for the boffins at Westminster either.

It was named "revolution" in Chinese, or "release" of China from capitalism, but it was in its heart a civil war. The war between Communists and Goumandang.

There are several approaches you can write for the establishment of PRC:

1. How http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiang_Kai-shek lost to Communists and later moved to Taiwan. (Focus on battles, tactics, decision makings)

2. Why Communists win. (More on civil difficulties commoners faced)

3. The 25 thousand miles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_March. A milestone for the Communists escape from Goumandang's siege which imo managed to spread the ideas of communism to the lowest folks of all across vast landmass, in which built up the fundation of Goumandang's defeat.

Hope that helps.
