Hitting a Dead End with the Companions

Post » Sat May 28, 2016 2:00 pm

I've got a problem. I've got to the point in the Companions where Farkas shows me my quarters, but he doesn't leave me a quest to follow. I think he mentions a quest, but for the life of me I'm damned if I can find it in my quests list. I then try to ask the other leaders but none of them offer me a quest either.

If you accepted a radiant quest from Farkas, that would stop another from being offered at the same time. See if you have one that appears on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Companions#Quests. You might not have it, and just not know it's a Companions quest.

Nope, there's just a talk the Companions leaders for work option. But like I said, the only dialogue they have is asking about the Companions and why they joined. I've tried it twice now and the same thing.

Then the only other possibility is that you have a non-Companions quest that conflicts in the radiant system. Just go clear out your pending ones, and come back later. Especially the "Kill the bandit boss" or "Fetch the item" ones.

For that, you'd need to post your mod list.

use spoiler tag for length [ spoiler] your list [ /spoiler] (no spaces between the brackets)

I've been looking on the Net and quite a few other people have had the same problem. It gets to right at the very end of "Take Up Arms", where Farkas shows me the quarters of the regular members, he then says something about a quest before walking off. Trouble is, not only am I not left a quest to follow but I've found that I haven't got a bed either. They're all marked as owned. And nope, I've not added any mods that changes anything to do with the Companions, except maybe for my follower mod, AFT.

Last time I did the Companions it was with AFT installed and I had no problem getting a bed and Farkas' first quest. So I don't expect AFT is the problem. Sorry I can't help more.

There's apparently a https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/2xpun2/help_companions_quest_take_up_arms_bug_has_to_do/ with the mod "Master of Disguise" - no idea if that pertains to your situation, and no idea where to look for a solution (apparently the mod owner has gone off the grid with all his/her/its stuff). There may be conflicts with any other mods that mess around with faction identity as well.

Do you have a save from shortly before the "Take Up Arms" quest? If so, I'd try that, play through again, and see if it's still an issue.

As a last resort, you could always use the console to check whether the quest completed properly, and if not, force-advance it to completion. To check the stage, type "getstage C00" in the console. It's supposed to be at 100. If it isn't, try "setstage C00 100" and see if that works (or if it breaks your game even more...).

There's always the possibility that his game is bugged and he needs to reload an earlier save.

Yes, I have Master of Disguise. Looks like it could be the one responsible for my troubles. I haven't used it in ages, ever since I became too powerful to care. Is the mod scripted?

Do not know if it is. So it is best to follow the standard of going to a save before that mod was installed. If using a bashed patch, merged patch, or sky proccer to patch mods you would need to rerun those. I usually just start from the beginning since I do enjoy the opening tutorial section and it gets better with each play through

Again, no idea, but I did stumble across the author's hiding place https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0o3cG8Q52tpVDFGZEZJMTBOblE&usp=sharing&tid=0B0o3cG8Q52tpNG5jaTVybmhZUGM. If you have SkyUI, have you tried disabling it through the mod configuration menu, either with your current save or an earlier save?

Edit: Oops, better link here: http://fireundubh.github.io/skyrim/

Edit 2: Actually, not so good, but I'll leave it for anyone who wants to track his/her/its current stuff.

Hmm, nothing seems to work. In that case I've decided to try and set my own radiant quest. I know I have to setstage and then the ID of the quest, but do I have to set a level too? At my level it would be the hardest.

As for the bed, what one am I supposed to have?

As far as beds, you are supposed to able to use any of them in that room. Generally the boyz sleep on the right side as you first enter the room and the gurls on the left.

I'm not 100% sure, but my hunch is that force-starting the radiant quest will be a temporary fix at best. From what I read about "Master of Disguise," it can muck up faction IDs. So, even if you can jigger the quest, you might find that the Companions still won't recognize you as a companion and thus won't give you the next quest.

Try adding yourself to the Companions faction first with the console command "player.addfac 00048362 0" and see if Farkas or Aela have something for you. If that doesn't work, try the same command with a 1 at the end instead of 0. Don't try anything higher, though - that will set you to higher ranks within the Companions, which may or may not muck things up down the line. (Here are my https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/615131-how-to-add-to-faction/ http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Factions_T for this info btw - hoping someone can confirm, as I've never actually tried this.)

Well, it turned out that I had to turn the mod off before it'd work for me. I keep a copy of every mod I have on a separate drive and it turns out that it is scripted. Could it cause corrupted saves keeping it turned off, at least until the end of the Companions plot?

I believe it could get a corrupted game save if it was active before on that game save.

There are but I do not recommend using them even as a last resort. If you do use one make backups of the game saves and make sure that you are not using the Steam Save cloud just in case.
