Hoarding

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:01 am

One thing that took a lot of my time in Oblivion, and even to an extent Morrowind, was collecting treasures and ornaments and putting them up all over my house to make it fill lived in. Display cases, bookcases, shelves, tables etc. were all platforms on which to put expensive weaponry, jewelry, ornaments and an extensive silverware collection. There were a few of problems in Oblivion with this:

>The standard of the Vanilla houses was fairly poor - they were unremarkable and had little support for making them your own, let alone for displaying all your treasures. Decent houses had to be modded in, many of which had huge support for display, even mannequins on which you could put gear.

>The grab controls were extremely fiddly and most of the time was spent trying to place the items properly. Frequently you'd knock over everything you just placed, while trying to position the next object. Books were nigh on impossible to put on a shelf. Eventually I had to install a mod which allowed me to move objects properly, without risk of destroying everything I just did.

>The was nowhere near the same volume of different clutter objects in Oblivion as there was in Morrowind, which had about 8 different sets of croquery and cutlery and dozens more unique objects (Dwemer Puzzle Box ftw!). I actually went as far as to install a museum/guild of archaeologists mod in Oblivion, which had loads of cool stuff, which I promptly stole and and put in my house.

>Your houses in Oblivion meant nothing. There was nothing you could do with them - couldn't have anyone round, could have a party and the servants were useless. The only thing resembling a decent , feature rich house was the Battlehorn Castle DLC.

Skyrim promises to make the houses a lot more important to the game, with the ability to invite people over. I'm just wondering how much the ability decorate your house and hoard loot will be supported, and how much this would mean to everybody else. Discuss.

I love to loot cool stuff and set it up around my homes. I hate the feeling of an empty house.

I'm hoping for more interactivity. Not sure if throwing house parties is high on the list, but more choice regardless.

I would like to buy display cases to put in my house. I also want a treasury room that I could put tons of coins and jewels seeing how it is unrealistic to carry around tons of coins
and it would be cool to look at your riches in a safe room.

I definitely hope they've fixed the grab controls. That was frustrating! It would also be nice if the display cases didn't end up with all of your stuff just falling to the bottom. I'd like it if there was more customisation too, so you could buy and place individual pieces of furniture. I always liked the idea of making a room full of display cases, which would be my trophy room. That thing about mannequins sounds great too - I'm on a console so no mods like that for me. Hopefully at least some of that kind of stuff makes it into the vanilla game.

They should do display cases similar to where you kept your armour in Knights of the Nine.

One thing I wanted was to be able to practice my bow skills on apples and such in my house but of course when you hit an apple with an arrow it goes flying. IF we can't have that I at least want to be able to put targets and attack dummies in my house like they have near the Fighter's Guild and such. I also hope we get to have cooking and alchemy tables and such in our houses.

Also houses in random places other than town like the NPC's have.

I want them to update this a lot as well.

I have so much stuff in Oblivion but not many places to have it outside of a chest etc.

I absolutely loved decorating my house in both Morrowind and Oblivion. (Even Fallout 3/NV) I make it a point to collect at least one of every item, weapon, armor, etc. Any tools that will aid me in properly placing things is welcome to me! Especially when it comes to books. I want my actual library to be on display. Not countless copies of the same five books. I mean, that is fine for looks. But when I actually have enough unique books to fill those shelves, let me do it in a non-ridiculously-difficult manner.

another problem was the physics collisions. sometimes an object would have an epilleptic fit inside a display case when you shut it. hope this is smoothed out for skyrim.

I hope we have display cases that an object will snap to and stay in place.

I was fanatic about this in Morrowind, but in Oblivion it was just too damn unmanageable.

I played Oblivion on the 360 and PS3, so I could never really display things. It would take me hours to drop items in the locations I wanted only to run into it later, knocking it to the floor. All my books, jewelry, weapons, etc had to be hidden in chests.

I really hope, I mean really, there is an easier way to display things on the consoles in this game.

It wasn't much easier on the PC. Solidarity, brother!

Maybe Skyrim needs some kind of Decorate Mode, like Fable has ? Easily place items with by just hitting a button.
Edit: I am also crazy about displaying my stuff in TES.

I never really cared about personalising houses in Oblivion, I spent most of my time out questing and adventuring rather than chilling back at H.Q, but the idea of making your house your own (personalise) isn't such a bad idea, I approve

I never did that.. I just looked for a house big enough that I could store my stuff all sorted in many containers.

I loved decorating my house, yes the controls were clunky (on xbox at least) and there could be more variety in decorating but if it's at Minimum what Obliv has I'll be ok, not going to complain if they improve it though ;)

I agree. Either I was forced to half-assed toss my stuff everywhere in OB, or throw it all in a best. MW was much nicer about loot placement, and the mannequin mod was very helpful. My Telvanni tower wouldn't have looked so awesome without mannequins to display all the awesome armor I collected on my travels.

I would settle for some big tables if I could arrange things easily like in MW! I hated trying to place things in OB, although it seemed easier (for me) when I played it on console rather than PC. I don't know why. But I never felt like my house was my home in OB. The houses were all ugly, poorly lit and poorly decorated. I hope that's changed.

I thought the rooms in Oblivion were safe. After carefully arranging many high level items on the windowsills through-out Benirus Manor, I came home one day to find they'd all fallen through the house

Lol it may be a 50/50 spilt of decorating to adventuring in my 1000's of hours playing tes/fallout.
But it's nice to have a richly decorated seeming alive and lived in home. Any good storage features are a must. Interesting stuff plz don't do a fo3 and give us a set of [censored] presets that where way over the top and entirely useless. More racks for weapons, bods for armour and jars for alchemy ingredients. Basemants were generally my sorted storage with the house decorated extensively just for looks. Don't scrim on the basemant full of boxes and barrels plz! Lol

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes and I agree.
Did I miss anything?
