Holiday's and Festivals!

Post » Mon Jul 04, 2011 10:01 am

Well coming up on the fourth here in the US got me wondering about the ES universe. Do you think there should be Holiday's and such in Skyrim?

What should they be?

I think there should be a Septim memorial day of sorts.

Perhaps after you end the civil war (presumably) there should be a Skyrim Independence day celebrated in the streets of the major cities.

I don't know I think I would Like it.

Any ideas for more?

Also I realize that this would be difficult to notify a player of upcoming events if they are out exploring and what not. This could be remedied by fliers posted in towns days in advance of the actual events, and with dialog options.

I think that would be interesting. You travel to a town and for some reason everyone is dancing and cheering in the streets :foodndrink:

I loved Holidays in Daggerfall, even the simple ones.

The only problem is you either have holidays generic and similar to one another, or you add an intensively large amount of VA work and storage.

For that to happen, we would need an In Game Calender that we could make notes on. I want holidays in for that reason ALONE.

Yes. They were great in Daggerfall, and I've used a holiday mod for Morrowind and Oblivion and it's great there too. Even if it's just as simple as "It's a holiday. Half price at the Mage's Guild." it can still add a lot to roleplaying. However, there is endless potential to improve upon holidays. All kinds of crazy events could go down on holidays to make for really unique experiences.

Two Words: Pie Week. An entire week devoted to the making and eating of pies, and it can get more than a little crazy. This was a holiday in Warhammer, and it was very fun to participate in it in WH Fantasy Roleplay.

Sure. I would love to. It'd be awesome to go into a city after adventuring for a day or two, and have someone run up to you and say "Happy [insert holiday/celebration here]" and give you a sweetroll or a cake. But it would get annoying if it happens too often.

Yes and the great part iis, it's not that hard to change the behaviour of all citizens for the.. umm wieghtless carrots day, whatever.. Making guards more on the watch, while some might even participate and get a drunk status.

You played the Warhammer RPG? Amazing universe. Really dark, but funny as well. Good system too. :-)
I also GM'ed an adventure for it with a local "honey festival", which involved regular festivities and a contest of who could make the best mead and other alcoholic beverages.
One of the contesting barrels contained chaos berries, which causes illnesses and mutation. So the jolly festival turned into a carnival of horrors and gave my players clues to investigate, which was part of a bigger campaign.

Anyway, there's lot's of fun stuff you can do with festivals. It's not just a collection of silly minigames, it's an excellent plot hook for quests.
If you visit the same city 20, 30 times during your game, it just makes it seem more like a real place if there's something interesting going on once in a while.

Yes, I certainly would like that old touch of observed holidays & festivals back in a TES game.

Seems like more of an MMO concept to me. I wouldn't oppose it I guess, but I won't miss having them in game.

I'm not sure why you think so, but I don't know of any MMO with a holiday.

This was also from a different experience, but the holiday in Assassin's Creed 2 was very well shown.

They could have something like an Oktober Fest, or a parade where the Nords play techno ans dance through the streets.

Yes! It would be very cool. However, I doubt it's made the cut; unless it's something to do with a quest (I'm too pessimistic, I know).

Yep, you are absolutely correct. The festival in AC2 was very well done and added a lot to the game amd story. I stand corrected!

I'd love to see TES varients of real life holidays, holidays from the lore put into action, as well as a few references to past game events.

LOTRO

AC2 was a good example of how to handle it in a non-tacky way
