Holidays and Celebrations

Post » Wed Aug 04, 2010 6:23 am

Do you think The Elder Scrolls V should have Holidays and/or celebrations throughout the years while playing the game?
Please explain your vote!

For example, let's say the 2nd week of June is a special Holiday in honor of a god that the town celebrates and has festive food and outfits you can buy and participate in mini-games and such.

I voted Yes.
I think celebrations and/or Holidays would be a great thing to implement into The Elder Scrolls V since in the other The Elder Scrolls games all the days are almost the same despite calendar date and weather changes.
For instance, if there is a festival celebrating the god of fire and everyone around town wears orange and red clothing, people breathe fire (not literally, you know what I mean), and have celebrations with food, and minigames, et cetera. To me this would make TES feel like an always moving world, so the next day, it could be a normal day or the start of a celebration for a new holiday for that week, or month, or however long it is celebrated. :)

Once a year events might be rather extremely rare, I can understand it if they do not find that worth their time to put into the game since many people might never see it.

However, traveling fairs, open markets, jousting games and such could be present at certain days of the month.

Every 1th of the month there could be an open market with many vendor stalls at a certain city, and at other specific days of the month this open market could take place at other cities. Some cities might not participate in this cycle. Some rare goods could be found on this market, some could be required for a quest.

There could be message boards in each town that list all official events and when they take place in that town. NPC's could also talk about the next upcoming event when you ask about it.

Wow, didn't even know Daggerfall had holidays :)
But that's the idea I'm getting through with this poll.

I voted no.

I think the idea is swell, but I'd rather have them spend the time/budget on something that has an effect on the whole game or is visible most of the time. Such as improving the quality of the gameplay, animations or other assets.

Rather than something that is only visible/usable during specific times.

Like I said in my other polls, these are something nice to be implemented, each TES game is released between 3 and 10 years, I pretty sure they won't forget or mess up something important while also adding this if they decide to do so.

Yup, Daggerfalls holidays have always seemed exciting to me, and maybe in one of my Oblivion playthroughs, I'll celbrate them.

This also, travelling markets could be an alternative way to travel, or just something that you may find occaisonally on your adventures when you need to stock up.

We don't really need holidays. We just need a street-wide open market with a bunch of merchant selling on the street and the town idiot hopping around while a bard playing flute. There would be loud NPCs walking around (pretense of shoppers) and a lot of food looking polygons on tables with decorations, so it feels like some fair.

No, except I want it to snow when the PS3 clock shows December 25th. That's not really the same thing is it?

I voted yes, it would make the days and months seem like more than just names and numbers and make the game feel more alive but then again you need something that happens more often and feels natural or else it just ends up as the NPCs changing their routines and little else.

I think a holiday once a week would work the best. After all, most who play TES are completionists and hope to see and do everything the game has to offer, even if it takes them years. I would love some quest related content for the holidays. the best way to do so is have a celebration at the local temple once a week. Of course, this would require radiant AI that was cut from Oblivion.

Theres not really many ways to make this work coherantly, or canonly. Most players (those not using strategy guides and such) would miss these holidays since they would be busy doing something else, and many of them wouldnt even know about them causing them to wait forever just to get a certain quest. If implemented, holidays and celebrations would have to be flexible to when the player could get to a certain location.

Like arriving in a town during a month long celebration that occurs only when you get that far into the game. AI wise this would take a lot of time and effort to implement into the overall world. Honestly I would love it, but it just doesnt seem feasible unless the game was online...which it wont be.

Fairs are a celebration of some sort. And the poll asked for Holidays and/or Celebrations. Just saying.

Holidays are certainly a good idea to bring back. Be it in the form of fairs, merchants, services, festivals, or even something as simple as a free drink.

That is only if The Elder Scrolls V is a direct sequel to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Yes, it would be fantastic. I doubt it would happen - particularly in the next installment - but I would love it nonetheless.

It's already been done in Daggerfall, all they have to do would to bring it back into The Elder Scrolls V. Well of course the holidays would be related to TESV but would have an impact on society.

The game mechanics of Daggerfall made holiday occurrences not that difficult to be used by the player, though I am unsure if the same mechanics will be implemented in TES: V if you are already aware of some basic things about Daggerfall, specifically how much time passes while fast travelling and the expansiveness of the map, then ignore the rest of this paragraph, if not, read on. Daggerfall's map can only be described by the term gigantic, to simply walk from one end of the game to the other may take you two weeks of real-time playing committed only to walking. Fast travelling from one region of the game to another presents a variety of options such as whether you are going carefully or recklessly, whether you will stop at camps or inns, whether you will use boats to cross water etc. Sometimes fast travelling would take you 80 days or more, a fairly long time in my opinion.

Thus, we can summarize that time has the opportunity to pass much quicker for the player in Daggerfall, than the proceeding games in the series. This means that for every time you get to celebrate a specific holiday in Morrowind and Oblivion, that holiday may have been celebrated 20 times or possibly more in Daggerfall. Leading to better value for the work put into making those holiday's for the player.

I personally would love to see holidays come back again, but without same work on time tweaking, I have a slight amount of difficulty imagining how it would work.

There could always be several different celebrations going on in one month rather than just one, each going to different cultures and beliefs.

True, I was simply pointing out that the reason it worked so well in Daggerfall was because you could rather 'easily' go back and experience the same holiday rather quickly.
