Holstering Weapons

Post » Mon Dec 07, 2015 9:10 pm

I am wondering if it is still possible to holster and have your weapon visible while in 3rd person like at the side or on your back. From the e3 video and some of the leaked gameplay videos or screenshots (sorry for mentioning) I havent seen any evidence that holstered weapons appear on your character and in fact in some instances the gun sometimes appeared in the players hands. Not gameplay breaking but kind of immersion breaking. Does anyone know that it is still possible to have holstered weapons shown on character? Not asking to post any of the leaked stuff but some clarification would be awesome. Still very much looking forward to the game. Thank you.

I was wondering this exact same thing last night.

Skyrim had a rudimentary system that was never actually implemented. Two or three mods attempted (with mixed results) to remedy this.

IN all honesty I doubt this will be in the game. When you switch from your pistol to your rifle as the main weapon, the holstered pistol will magically disappear and vice versa.

Bethesda always goes the extra mile on big things, but rarely goes the extra mile on little things (for instance I was just at the Nexus downloading a mod to make Argonian horns appear through helmets).

It's not even that though, at least you could see your currently equipped weapon on your back/hip in Skyrim. Fallout 4 doesn't even seem to have that.

Yeah its pretty much confirmed at this point that there are no holsters. Not one npc has had a weapon on their back.

Damn that svcks if true. I understand its probably hard with the layered armor system now and highly customizable weapons but dang. Maybe they could patch it in later or something. Or a mod could do it though I personally would have to wait longer or not even get it at all as I play on console. Thanks for the replies.

Holstering and visibly carried weapons relies upon a very limited load out.

Geralt of Rivia has two swords, so it makes sense you can see them.

Punished Snake wears two weapons, sometimes rather uncomfortably.

In Mass Effect your load out is carried but again it is limited.

In Fallout 4 you may be carrying:

  • A Baseball Bat
  • Several pistols
  • Several rifles
  • A Fat Man
  • A range of energy weapons
  • Various crafted weapons

So what's going to happen to all of those?

Does the equipped weapon 'holster' to a range of body locations only to mysteriously swap to something else?

There's no perfect answer here, this is not a case for not doing it,

but it's a lot bigger of a challenge than many games face without the wide range of weapons that Fallout 4 has.

And a modder will build holsters for 50 base weapons and 700 variants

that can be carried, swum in, sneaked in, etc... good luck with that.

It was already proven that the reason why we didn't see holstering during the leaked videos is because the player was quick swapping between weapons, instead of holstering them and then switching weapons.

Yeah I'm figuring this is due to the new armor/weapon mod systems. With layered armor and the potential for crazy weapon mods, clipping is a very big reality there. They may have scrapped it to avoid all that. As far as immesion breaking, it's just as believable as switching weapons anyway. Where was the other 25 rifles? In yer ass?

This has bugged me in all the Bethesda FO and TES games. In the same way Dawnguard added mounted combat, it'd be nice if an official DLC added some holster system.
Even if it was just the most recently equipped long weapon on back and most recently equipped short weapon on hip.
Ideally a fully thought out system where you could craft actual holsters, equip them and then assign specific weapons to them would be great. I've always wanted my female character to look like Alice in ResEvil:Extinction film!

That's what's going to happen with all those weapons.

I figure power armor is a big reason it's probably gone, they didn't want weapons clipping with Jetpacks and such.

Really svcks though if it's the case. I enjoyed seeing my currently equipped weapon as I wandered around in third-person.

Kind of weird to be going back to Morrowind with the holster system.

As I said, the reason we didnt see weapon holstering was because the person was using quick-swapping instead of holstering, unequipping, then equipping a new weapon.

What about the NPC's at the end of the Big leagues video who pull their weapons from nowhere? or the fact that we haven't seen it once in any of the gameplay.

Yeah, I've gone through and looked, and the only time we see a weapon is when it's in someone's hand.

Would be absolutely pathetic if you can't.

I've no doubt that the modders will be able to fix this shoddy bit of game design, if true.

That will no doubt mean a script extender so that means for all us console "Peasants" as pc players like to call us get none of that holstery goodness. :(

Huh. Thats a pretty odd thing to not have anymore. Looking through the leaked videos I think you're right.

If I had to guess why its gone I think the layered armour system was the reason. So much potential for some really awful clipping there, and there's no way you'll get it 100% perfect with a system as in depth as that. Same kinda thing with Morrowind, you don't want people dressing up their own completely unique outfit and then get really mad when their weapons look like complete ass on their character model.

Honestly i dont think we will see any mod that will do it eather(at least not do it good), and the reason is very simple with so many diferent possibilites(suposedly around 700 weapons variants multiplied with so far unknown amount of possibile armor/clothing combinations) it wud be an imposibile task to do it properly without dedicating huge resouces to it.(which are better spent on other aspects of the game).

Games like Witcher or Mass effect have in comparison very limited amount of possibile combinations so it is possibile for them to do it, but with the sheer number of possebilites in Falllout 4 that wud be a gigantic task to do and i think a lot of people just dont realise the scope of the work needed to make non cliping holsters for 1000s and 1000s possibile combinations of moded weapons and customized armors.

Do i think it wud be great to have it sure, but as said to do it properly it wud just be an insane amount of work.

I always fixed bad clipping rifles with a backpack mod. ^_^

But, seriously... wow. Not even pistols? :o
