I was doing Reilly's Rangers quest and I was just about to reach the compound and I found a scavenger in a little tunnel with a nice set up, Is it possible to claim this as a home? I looked around and did not find any answers as to whether or not it could be a good place, help?

Most likely not, usually scavanger homes cannot be taken over without receiving bad karma penalties and not being able to sleep in their beds regardless if they are dead. Unless of course you are on the PC version, in that case anything is possible.

Wow. Triple post. Interwebz lag, I guess?

I really have no idea if you can sleep in a Scavenger's bed. I don't even know where to find their homes! But try saving before you do anything. Then you can always go back to before.

If the place is owned, you cannot sleep in the bed. And you get a karma penalty whenever you take something from a container. This makes for a bad home.

That makes sense. But what classifies as "owned"? When you kill a good guy to get their home?

An item is classified as owned when the ownership tab is set for the item. So even if you kill the owner, the item is still considered to be owned. This has the unfortunate consequence that you cannot use the beds, even if all residents are dead. On the other hand, many laws seem to consider murder followed by theft worse than the murder alone.
