Homeless

Post » Tue Oct 07, 2014 9:36 pm

So I was chatting with Inigo and asked him to tell me about me. One of the things Inigo told me was that I was homeless and I thought "now that is odd, I am level 60 and do not own a home". In Morrowind and Oblivion owning and setting up my homes was always a big part of my role plays but in Skyrim it just does not seem to be very important. I am wondering how other people feel about homes in Skyrim.

Hearthfire is cool. But the common houses are useless.

I enjoy the process of a character finding a home. Most of mine do, though a few have gone their whole game living out of their packs and saddlebags (mods). And of course some die before they get a chance to settle down.

Each of my characters has a place to call home. For some that's a house in almost every city. For others it might be a shack in the woods (from a mod) And for others it might be Hearthfire. All my characters end up with some sort of home as they all inherit one of my own personal traits. Hording. I'll probably never use that sword but you know I might one day and at least I got it. :P

Which home as I mentioned depends upon the character's personality. For example my tomb raiding/robbing thief owns Lakeview and Honeyside.

Depends on the character. I've got a vampire right now who lives in Embershard Mine. It helps that Skyrim's got a much longer respawn rate than Oblivion. I've got another (a Crusader) who lives in Proudspire Manor. One of my characters lived in Pinewatch (bandit lair underneath an ordinary house).

I think I've only had one who was truly homeless: he often crashed in the Drunken Huntsman.

Renee, you just reminded me that Pax the Benevolent lived in the Bannered Mare throughout his game. I thank the devs every day for non-respawning containers. :)

I will have to look at some of the house mods and see. For now though I will keep using the Inns, Campsites and my tent.

Depends on the character :) but I find I always end up building Lakeview Manor no matter the character, since it makes a nice home base for my followers. Can't beat the view there :P

I like my characters to be able to call towns their homes. I was even like that playing Daggerfall, in which houses are MUCH more expensive and Arena in which you can't buy houses and any other houses you enter spawn monsters. So I buy houses rather quickly.

I enjoy the building of the Hearthfires Homes, but find that they rarely "respawn" their areas. They become too convenient to stop off and store loot :)

Sometimes it relies on my type of character, sometimes I just choose what I want regardless of my character, and sometimes I just choose Breezehome because it's the most convenient in every sense of the word.

For my current playthroughs:

My Ranger (avatar) has a small dwelling in Lakeview manor (the small house), with a garden full of Deathbell, Imp Stool, and Mora Tapanella (poisons for hunting dragons)

My Warlock resides in the College of Winterhold (he gave the title of Archmage to Tolfdir thanks to a mod). As a home away from home, he uses Anis' Cabin near Riverwood.

My Khajiit brawler has no official home, but will most likely end up in Honeyside/Thieves guild in Riften.

I used to make my characters homes in Morrowind and Oblivion. Designing a home was an integral part of pre-game character creation for me. I haven't done that as much in Skyrim.

Princess Stomper made me a wonderful home in Solitude which my last two characters used. Others have used Breezehome, one of the Hearthfire houses or have rented rooms. A few were itinerant.

I genuinely like Breezehome, Honeyside and Hjerim, as well as Heljarchen Hall (Hearthfire). Modding houses is one of my great pleasures (lighting design interests me a lot), but since I'm not playing Skyrim on PC at the moment, the aforementioned houses are my favorites.

It isn't often that I actually secure Hjerim for my characters though, since it requires more involvement in certain questlines than I am typically eager for.

Yeah, it's pretty cool that ALL the containers up there won't respawn. Good point.

I, too, like Hjerim, but like you, do not obtain it very often :)

I do that a lot in Skyrim. Houses added by mods are usually an overkill for my taste, so I often make a shack or a small house for my character. Sometimes the house or a shack is close to the city, sometimes it's in the middle of the forest. Sometimes I make a less rich home somewhere in the city, sometimes I add another farm house (and a small farm) next to the others in front of the city.

Some characters don't have a home in that matter, but have a tent at specific location, or move from fort to fort, or take up some space in a ruin or a cave, but in the end, every single character has a space where he comes back at the end of every adventure, stores a bit (or a lot) of items, eats and sleeps.

yeah only my stormcloak characters ever get that home.

I will say the homes I end up choosing are in areas that my characters are most often in. Which is hardly Eastmarch or Winterhold. Or the Pale... and for that matter the colder areas of the morthal swamps.

I usually have two bases, but no real home. Anise's Shack over by Riverwood (mostly because it has an enchanting table and an alchemy table), and Valtheim (after I take it from the bandits unless I join their faction). I put no-respawn containers in both places, both have beds, and the view from Valtheim is terrific..

None of my characters remain homeless for long. I like the homes in Skyrim and Hearthfire. I also have one modded home, the hunter's cabin near Riverwood, where my current character is staying. I have Frostfall so she can have a tent to call home and keep warm while she's adventuring.

*I also have the Inigo mod - and I do enjoy chatting with him. :)

I always get all the houses, but for no real reason and all my stuff is packed in the little house in Whiterun simply because it's the first and cheapest house to get. I like to decorate my houses with weapons on racks and armours on armour stands, but I never think of any of them as my home.

My house in Markarth is always decorated with forsworn equipment regardless if I side with them or not in Cidhna mine.

Most of my characters will eventually buy or build a home, though it is very often late in the playthrough. About half of the time I will use a mod that adds a player home, but when I don't, any vanilla home I do use will have been mod affected anyway. All of my characters use portable bedrolls and tents, with some even using that as their primary "residence". Many of them will use inns in the middle of the playthrough, when they have started accumulating more wealth but are not yet ready to "settle down".
