Honesty Of Trailer?

Post » Thu Dec 17, 2009 3:55 pm

It's confirmed that it's all gameplay (except the wall), so I would say it's very honest.

It's in-game as in, it was rendered in the game engine. Those are probably the level of graphics we will see. But the actual animation and behavior of the characters? I don't believe it's gameplay.

This.

It's all in-engine, but the dragon fight is clearly scripted.

As I mentioned in an earlier topic, there isn't going to be any "rise slowly from your knees with a determined look" perk. They used custom scripted animations to make the trailer look more cinematic, which is to be expected.

And this.

Just because it's rendered "in-game", doesn't mean it's unscripted gameplay.

Well, sprinting is in, so presumably the panting and head bobbing are part of that feature. The whole scene with the dragons is definatly in game, but scripted. And that's OK, nobody should be complaining about it. it's normal for game developers to put short scripted scenes in their trailers. The rest was all gameplay.

Just elaborating on this, the "Bobbing" and "Camera Shakes" are part of an effort to remove the feeling that Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas share, the unshakable feeling of piloting a small, hoving camera with arms perpetually in front of it. They're really trying to make it feel as though you're looking through "Eyes", and so far, I think they've done a pretty admirable job, even if some of the early reports on the camera during melee are less-than-perfect.

Secondly, hands visible in first person. The bit where he stops at the cliff- thats some nifty edge detection right there, and a good animation too. Or an exadurated piece of CGI.
There's no edge detection, the player just stopped sprinting.

I really, really ,really hope that's true. Otherwise, they would end an era of 100% seamless gameplay in TES.

I don't doubt the trailer is true. (It looks so much cooler with a dynamic camera of course.)

Never doubt Bethesda!

I think it's almost all gameplay. And if not, would it really matter? It's a trailer after all.

It's all in-game man. This has been covered several times.

just as he said....the dragon fighting is like that...Todd said it him self ....fightind a dragon isn't going to be anything like oblivion normal fights.

I bet Bethesda are laughing their butts off at the doubters.

I bet they are just glad they made some thing good enough to be doubted...

Hopefully we can still "unready" them. Don't see why not.

The hands visible in first person, they could have done that in game, then added the hands to the video.

Why are people so incredulous about this, hands have always been visible in first person. It's the only part of the body you can see in fact. It would be a little hard to show a sword in Oblivion if you didn't also show a hand holding it. It would look pretty stupid just having it hanging in mid air in front of you.

I'd love to know how many times they had to replay this bit to get it to stop exactly at the edge, I can imagine 20-30 replays with the player either stopping to short, or sailing over the edge to their death :)

Why would it be difficult? There's no inertia in a video game, if you take your finger off the run key your character stops moving completely and immediately.

For me, the only thing that was strange - but would be cool if it's ingame, very cool - was when he stopped at the cliff.

Wouldn't you stop at a cliff if you almost fell over while you were running (in-game)?

I think it would not be uncommon if you are running away from a Dragon and end up cornered at the edge of a cliff.

Its not scripted at all and that cliff thing was in RDR too... you try gallop a horse from a cliff, the horse dodges that cliff for example

Ok, so you never fell off an edge while playing........say.......Tomb Raider?

Yes the Character stops when I take my finger off the button, but what if I misinterpret the distance and take my finger off to early or to late because I am traveling fast as the character is sprinting? .......... for the answer, re-read my original thread.

About the cliff...

Why does he run towards it and then go "Whoaa dude, I'm totally at a cliff!"

Hopefully that animation doesn't auto trigger everytime we're running near a cliff. With the new environments and mountains I know i'm going to go cliff diving every now and then.

Yes, yes. Of course. What I found strange was how he stopped, how we could see him trying to get balance with his hands. That animation would need some kind of border detection.

If it's in the game, I would expect it to trigger just when you stop at the border. If you keep on running, you fall.

I think it triggered when you stopped running so instantly, and possibly connected to being near a cliff when you did that.
