honeymoon?

Post » Fri Jan 07, 2011 6:27 am

okay I need some suggestions.

I need to plan my honeymoon, my future wife and I decided that we no longer want to travel to Mexico. I'm looking for suggestions of affordable (2500$ for 7 nights 2 people) all - inclusive resorts in the caribbean. If any of you have suggestions, please send them my way. Also if you have had a particularly awesome experience at a particular Island or something like that feel free to share .

Thanks,

Geri

Well, I kinda decided that when I eventually get married, I would like to go to Nicaragua. Being only 17, this is ofcourse, subject to change. Plus, if my wife says no, I can't really force her. So, yeah..

I've never actually been to the Caribbean, but I've been to London many times with my boyfriend, its one of the romantic locations of the world in my book.

My best friend went to the Dominican Republic for his honeymoon and didn't like it at all. Too pricey and he said that the atmosphere wasn't great. 2 years later he and his wife went on a vacation to Jamaica and they loved it, and plan to go back soon. So, from what I've heard Jamaica>DR

Oh yeah, Paris is lovely, but I doubt it's very affordable if you're in the US.

First of not sure where you live so prices can be differnt. Here in Canada you will not get anything for a 7 night 2 people all inclusive for $2500. Maybe $2500 each, but not 2. If you are in Ontario, your best bet is to call a Travel Agency this way you are protected with the Ontario Travel Insurance or what ever it's called,so if something goes awry, you get your money back. Other wise, you have itravel2000.com I think, and other sites you can visit but I strongly suggest go to a Travel Agency if they have insuarnace guarnetees like in Ontario (it is law) to get your money back if something goes wrong.

I read to many horror stories people doing it themselves and it ended up costing double or triple the amount they paid when they got there. Be very careful of online sites.

As a side note, I saw a report if you use 2 different browsers even on the same page, you will get up to a $750 difference for the same flight and package. Prices usually go up as well, so before it will say $500 for example, after a few minutes of surfing the price can increase from $520-$600 for example.

So please do your homework.

You could do a cruise and experience more places, but spend less time in each place.

Geri:

Where do you live? This matters greatly.

In Canada, the top (cheap) Caribbean-area destinations are Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, to some extent Costa Rica, and of course Mexico. Then there's smaller places like Aruba and Antigua, though frequently not as cheap, mainly due to flights.

There might be an option like Travelzoo.com to give you the heads-up on noteworthy sales, too. I haven't read reviews of any of those trips offered from the sales, but the discounts are steep so I'd take them with a grain of salt. Most of them are offered by reputable companies, at least.

My parents took us to Aruba for a week (or was it 2 weeks? I forget). Naturally, I don't know how much that cost... anyway, it was absolutely great, but it really depends where on the island you stay at, and I don't really know if there are any all-inclusive packages available. We stayed at the Amsterdam Manor (west side of the island, near Eagle Beach), it was a nice quiet place, not one of the high-rises. The beach wasn't very crowded, it was quiet (no constant music, nor packed with people). We went in March, and the weather was great. But, weather is an important factor, and even though it is a desert island, bad weather can happen.

Recently, my parents got back from an all-inclusive package at Cancun, specifically the Moon Palace Resort (I think?). It is a closed facility, and my parents said they felt very safe and secure there. Also, the adjacent beach was free of beggars and wares-hawkers (all the beaches in Mexico are owned by the state, so individual resorts can't control/restrict the people who go there). But, my parents said the beach was more an "ambiance beach," and that there was quite a bit of seaweed, so it wasn't so great for swimming in. But, you mentioned you didn't want to go to Mexico (completely understandable, given all the violence).

A long time ago (I was a wee one), my parents took us to Bermuda. The US Virgin Islands are also supposed to be good, safe destinations, you might try finding a travel package there. I don't really know much about other island destinations in the Caribbean, sorry.

Take the $2500 and spend it on a 7 day cruse in the Caribbean instead.

Let me know what she says.

Take the $2500 and spend it on a 7 day cruse in the Caribbean instead.

The issue then becomes one of getting to the port of call. Sure, cruises can come fairly cheap, with $1000 per person for 7 days being fairly easy to find, but if it costs another $1200 to fly two people to San Juan or Fort Lauderdale (as would be my case) it might stretch that small budget.

As with the OP, I'll also be looking at something cheap and possibly warm for a honeymoon destination sometime this fall/winter, but I'm all too aware that while $2500 might be possible for my fiancee and I, it won't necessarily be comfortable. Hopefully there's some elasticity in that budget... Or perhaps the answer is to delay your honeymoon a few months for greater financial freedom. Though if you do that, set a firm date... I've heard of many a couple that wind up skipping a honeymoon altogether when they go that route, and that's not something you should do.

Another option... I've very recently seen flight + 7-day condo packages to Maui going for as little as $700 per person, depending on your city of departure.

Paris is pretty cool. They realised that a city should be civiilised, full of grand palaces and cathedrals, decked out in gold and filled with statues and wrought iron gates. Obviously there are crap parts, but you don't have to go there. The downside is, it's quite expensive, especially if you don't already live in Europe.

Nor do I. They advertise them everywhere but I've yet to summon the courage to try one.

I'm going to Paris in a few weeks, can't wait.

I love London. People that don't generally like cities might not love it though.

I can say that San Francisco is a slum, since I live nearby and have worked there. Bums everywhere and the place smells like pee. But people honeymoon there all the time.

It is truly awesome. I know the French like to pretend they're the best at everything, and i didn't believe them 'til I went, but they really do make cities better than anyone else on the planet.

Make sure to visit the Emerald City http://www.linternaute.com/savoir/grands-chantiers/06/dossier/la-defense-2015/images/1.jpg. The place is silent. Eerie.

thanks for the advice folks.

For those that need more information, I live in Texas.

We have considered a cruise, however that's not the vibe of the tribe that we want, so it's kinda lower on the list of prospects. We have already been on a cruise in the western caribbean that started in Galveston, Tx with ports of call in Nassau, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman. So if we took another cruise it'd be out of Miami, and hopefully to the eastern caribbean/ virgin islands. I didn't particularly care for Grand Cayman, and Mexico is ruled out. Thanks for the Aruba suggestion, that seems like a definite possibility..

Also, she's a history buff, so any places with really interesting history are a plus.

Also, flight arrangements aren't included in that 2,500$ budget, this is simply for destination, and possibly spending money.

for $2500 you can use my basemant. food, internet, cable provided as well as a comedy act (i have a couple of joke books i can read from) and live musical entertainment (i can borrow a karaoke machine). i will not shoot you, i only speak english so no weird languages coming out of my mouth, dinner can be either homecooked or brought in from a variety of award winning eateries in the vicinity such as KFC, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Taco Bell, Culvers and many other fine establishments. and the best part of the deal is that its pretty much as far away as you can get from mexico outside of alaska. :)
