I'm hooked on Oblivion

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 10:21 pm

I got it 2 days ago from my local shop thankfully it mostly sells old games because it's not a proper game shop and I was lucky to get the game of the year edition. I started playing and now can't stop. I find it much better than Skyrim in many ways. The story line I Like more in Oblivion the guilds are better in Oblivion as well What do you think Oblivion or Skyrim?

It's not Oblivion or Skyrim with me. It's Oblivion and Skyrim.

I hope I don't offend you in saying this, but I really cannot stomach this tendency of so many gamers to pit one game against another as though they were sports teams. In my view, it too often leads to a "my game is better than your game" showdown between eternally opoosed points of view that never ends, that is never resolved, and only leads to name-calling, hard feelings and locked threads.

I don't know, maybe I've just been around these forums too long. Maybe I've seen too many of these threads: first about Daggerfall versus Morrowind, then about Morrowind versus Oblivion, and now about Oblivion versus Skyrim. Maybe I'm weary of either/or thinking and wish, just for once, people would think in and/and terms. But I know that's too much to ask of humanity. So I'll just shut my trap.

I'm so glad you're enjoying Oblivion. It is a wonderful game! I join Pseron in suggesting it is better simply enjoyed rather than comparing to other games.

Welcome to the obsession!

I'm with Pseron - I enjoy both Oblivion and Skyrim. At the moment I play more Oblivion, but that'll likely change soon. It always does!
Oblivion and Skyrim have their strengths and weaknesses - while I prefer Skyrim's Dark Brotherhood questline, I enjoy Oblivion's Mage's Guild questline more than its newer counterpart. And besides - as Pseron pointed out - those sorts of discussions NEVER end well.

I agree with Pseron and Acadian in that it shouldn't be a "fight" over which game is better.

IMO however, I think Oblivion is much better, and more fun. It dosn't mean that Skyrim is bad par say just it dosn't appeal to me, and that's fine. It does to a lot of people.

the guild questlines are so much better in oblivion, i just wish that it had more...culture? i think what morrrowind and skyrim did better was giving the providence a sense of culturural identity

Also oblivion had pig nose orcs, way better than the orcish noses in skyrim

Seconded. I enjoy both Oblivion and Fallout 3 at the moment. They′re both made by the same company too and many things in both of them makes me think of the other game, but I don′t compare them. Instead I enjoy them both for what they are and neither exclude the other

Welcome to Cyrodiil! :icecream:

Oblivion. For now.

Skyrim was fun the first month or so, then it lost its charm for me. Perhaps it will pick back up in a few months or years. There's time enough.

Eh. I like 'em both. I put in Oblivion yesterday for quite a few hours as I wrote a story for one of my characters in that game, and then I followed it up with a massive Skyrim session. We're talking hours with each game. I think I was up past midnight.

Before 11/11/11 I was assuming I'd like Skyrim much more, and in many ways it is more immersive for me. But during the first hour of gameplay, I knew I could never abandon Cyrodiil. Both games offer enough differences to make them unique. You can't get me to choose one over the other!

I agree in a way. Cyrodiil is more "fun" and colorful. It makes me laugh more, especially NPC conversations.

EDIT: I wanted to welcome you here, DylanMC. Welcome to the forums that is. Yea, I"m still hooked on Oblivion, all of us regulars here are.

It’s great that you’re enjoying Oblivion! I love both games that you mentioned. I’m just not interested in comparing them, and I’m glad I don’t have to choose only one! :)

If only oblivion would have skyrim's marvellous dungeons

They're marvelous. They're well-designed, but notice how 90% of the caves and mines especially are linear. One way in and one way out, with very little differentiation.

It's yet another area in which Oblivion has an edge. Some of those dungeons can actually make us lost!

I'm a person who absolutely loathes being lost in dungeons. I adore getting lost in the wilderness, I can't get enough of that. But I get frustrated quickly when I get lost in a dungeon. It's just not fun to me.

That said, I don't really remember getting lost in a dungeon in Oblivion. All of the past three games have seemed to have similarly linear dungeons to me. I don't know, maybe I've just banished the memory of being lost from my mind or something...

Yea, it must be awhile since you've been in some of Cyrodiil's dungeons, then. Some of them go thru so many twists and turns and intersections and dead-ends. I'm not gonna say it's 100% fun, but it is something I'm missing in Skyrim. Sometimes in Cyrodiilic dungeons, I wind up having to cheat a little, and study a map so I can figure out where the heck my char is. I never have to do this in Skyrim.

It just makes sense to me, though. Some dungeons should be places where we can possibly get lost.

Some of the Shivering Isles dungeons are very twisty and confusing, especially the root cave systems.

I definitely remember the feeling of finally getting to the sacred wooden door and thinking "This is it! I've made it!".... only to realise that it's only one door out of many more you'd need to open in order to get where you need:)

After six or so years of patches and add-ons, I think Oblivion is one of the greatest games of all time. Plenty of flaws, but plenty of fun too. I still play it strong, even though I'm knee deep in Skyrim right now.

They're all in the same series, in a few years they will talk about Skyrim being a true RPG and TESVI being an action game. Oblivion certainly has gained respect just by not being the newest TES game out, which is wierd.

I have played both games for ps3 and even though i only spent about 20 hours on skyrim and 36 on oblivion, i like oblivion better. I haven't finished the main quest in either game. But i just like how ob is set up and plays out over skyrim. I feel that you get more of a sence of acomplisment with OB espically when it comes to lvling you char. Im 5 hours into ob with my new guy and im still only a lvl 3 warr

I think Skyrim beats Oblivion hands down, and Morrowind is still better than either. That said, there is no "bad" Elder Scrolls game. They all do things a bit differently, some better than others. However, I do not see myself ever playing Oblivion again. I had a wonderful 6 or so years with it though, and have amazing memories of it!
