Hookshot

Post » Fri Aug 21, 2009 11:06 pm

EDIT: NOT LIKE THE ONE IN ZELDA

On the off chance that crossbows are in the game, I think an automated grappling would be not too far fetched. It's basically the same mechanism, and it would be a perfect item for stealth characters.

Even better, have it enclosed in a gauntlet.

I don't think it would fit.

How did I know that would be the first answer... I used the work "hookshot" because it was the only relevant word I could think of.

Automated grappling hook, how's that?

Skyrim could use some goombas as well.

I would settle for a plane old grappling hook, but I imagine adding the ability to scale walls would cause problems for game design.
Edit: I rather it not be in the game than some annoying version of it

Are you talking about a hookshot like in Zelda, where you shoot it and it pulls you in automatically? If so, I don't know if that would fit in the game. A bit too unrealistic and cartoonish for a TES game.

Now, if you were talking about shooting a crossbow bolt with a rope attached and being able to climb the rope after it stuck to something, then that would be a bit more feasible. Though I still can't really see it as being added to the game. Maybe something for a modder to add later, like what Scruggsy did with his Thieves Arsenal mod.

Yeah definitely, make it a reward for completing a Thieves Guild or something.

Nah this is completely out of the realm of TES. I don't even think BGS could justify having an obvious iconic weapon from another IP. If you want more assassin/thieves-based technology, Assassin's Creed would be a much better candidate.

Yeah, hookshot was the wrong word to use. Not like in Zelda.... Like a gauntlet that has a crossbow mechanism on top that shoots a long chain with an arrow attached. It doesn't pull you up, you have to climb up.

I would like to tie ropes to arrows and climb them, similar to the oblivion mod called "Theives Arsenal" I believe is the name.

A long chain is heavy and impracticle.

How about just stacking pillows? ;)

This isn't Just Cause 2....

Seriously though, I just don't see it fitting into an Elder Scrolls game. I love Zelda, and I love the hookshot (I also liked JC2 and the grappling hook as well)... but, IMO, it just does not fit the game style of The Elder Scrolls.

Not a huge heavy chain obviously, just something thin that can hold your weight and coil up inside the mechanism.

I still say it would be easier to work with if you were just shooting crossbow bolts with ropes attached.

For example, check out http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9655 for Oblivion I mentioned in my last post, notably the vine/rope arrows it uses.

Well, if Levitation is brought back, it could be a good way for Thieves and Warriors to access otherwise inaccessible places.

Just like we could add ropes to emulate slowfall for example.

Yeah I've seen those rope arrows, that's pretty much what I'm talking about. But for thief type characters IMO it would be a little easier to have that enclosed in your gauntlet rather than lug around a crossbow. That way you can even use it while you have your weapon out. And like I said, if they include crossbow technology, this is the exact same thing, just on your wrist instead.

Who needs the hookshot, when you can have . . . rope arrows!

lol, good to see some Thief fans in here.

Edit: gameplay wise, I like the extra amount of thinking involved in rope arrows versus a hookshot, but I wouldn't be opposed to a wrist-mounted crossbow for them...

Exactly, except rope arrows enclosed in a mechanism on your wrist similar to a small crossbow!

Why not just have a regular grappling hook that you throw? It would be neat if a thief had to be a little more creative with his exploits.

I'd rather not go that extra step, really. Seems gimmicky at that point, but a normal rope arrow is awesome.

That would do, but I thought if they implemented crossbow technology, just coil that grappling hook up and put it in a miniature crossbow mechanism on your gauntlet.

Can we also have a bat shaped boomerang? I'd call it the.. "batarang" and my character Bruce Wayne - a stealthy rogue/warrior type who only dresses in black would emerge from his underground lair ready to smite foes in his automotive mount mobile.

Why not just use telekinesis to pull the wall to you... except in reverse...
