Hope for those who like to decorate their settlements

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 3:28 am

As we all know there has been a LOT of complaints about the bug in the decorating aspect of settlement building. Placing things on shelves etc in workshop mode inevitably leads to those items falling off or through the surface they are on when you leave a settlement and come back again.

If you are like me and you love the decorating part of settlement building then there IS hope!

I do my decorating in "grab mode" instead of the workshop mode. I know some people complained this didn't work for them either but I know that equally there are those who it does work for too. In fairness, decorating in grab mode IS tricky and takes plenty of patience but it IS doable and after a while you get the hang of it and it becomes quite easy.

Here's a bit of inspiration for those of you who like to decorate. I done all of this in grab mode using my Xbox One so no console commands or mods were used here. Yes it took a while but mainly because I had to gather up a lot of them items. Placement of the items took about an hour. I have a bar and a food store in progress. Will post pics of those when they are finished.

Very nice. And kudos for patience :) Unfortunately grab mode does not work for me. Things still fall thru on cell reload.

Takes a lot of patience, which I usually don't have. I wish each object would have a gravity setting that would automatically flip it into the right position when you grab it. Like bottles, for instance, they should just flip bottom down even if you grab them while they are lying sideways. That would make everything SO much easier.

Wow! Great job man! All that is missing now is the "Skyrim push" where everything flies away! :-P

Nice. I don't use workshop mode myself, because I haven't really had that falling through objects problem. Sometimes they get knocked off, but it's rare. The hardest ones are the cans that naturally tilt to the side, and arranging the liquor wasn't exactly a cakewalk either. I dont have local leader but I decided to spice up the Red Rocket diner anyways, as it's one of the best bases with almost all the workbenches already built in.

I've been using modifications to the game to decorate my settlements.

I can make any item lock into place as a non-static,

I can force any build item to clip into any position,

And have expanded build sets beyond the base game.

I'm using a fairly powerful computer so I haven't yet run into issues with memory limitations with my nutty overboard builds.

How nutty well, I have been hanging draqes, placing Nuka Cola's in fridge, teddy bears, pillows, sheets, on beds....

Placing up working gun and toolracks. Putting ammo crates and guns nearby bunkers....Placing Powerful Construction Lamps to light up certain approaches to my settlements. I spend a lot of time working on my Guard Posts and the pathing the NPC takes to each of his posts. I always take a lot of time really working on the "Bar" which makes a nifty communal area for the settlers.

My settlements are like the show "Bar Rescue" :D

I have pictures for Fallout 4 up at the site called "Fallout 4 Nexus Mods"

Under the same profile name.

My Fallout 4 pictures are "safe for work" but not so much my other video game pictures over there...I decided that my Fallout 4 stuff will focus on settlements and be safe to look at.

@ GunsNfknRoses

That's done without a mod?

I'd have gone nuts before then.

Wow...so the key is to grab mode.

Definately for those days when you don't feel like shooting things.

The glowing stuff is irradiated blood, and the radaways are for cooling off during those hot, radiation stormy nights. I'm on PC but the only advantage I have is the mouse, no console, no mods, all surplus supplies from scavenging trips.

Alright! That's cool! I'm playing on PC as well. No mods for first play through.

Second play through I will mod the [censored] out of the game (if the Creation Kit is released when it's time).:D

This exactly. I was trying to set up a bunch of bowling pins in formation, but couldn't use "grab" because they were always sideways and I couldn't get them to stand upright, and just kept knocking all the others down in the process. So I used workshop mode because I realized it would stand them upright for me, and I could place them close together without any wobble or bounce when putting them down. This solution was awesome, until I came back later and all but one pin was gone, with the bottom half of the remaining pin and bowling ball sunken below the floor surface.

I wonder, if I temporarily place something in workshop mode so that I can make it stand upright, then pick it up in grab mode and put it right back down where I got it from, will that defeat the "falling through the surface" issue? I could see that working out, even in my bowling pin scenario, if I could set up the pins in workshop mode, then go into regular mode, "grab" each pin and then promptly release it without moving it around much. Anyone know if this works? As long as the last time you place the object is in "grab" mode? It's still an extra step that we shouldn't have to take, but at least it would be better than slamming everything around and hoping it will eventually right itself after 10 minutes (and then knocking down your 4 other bowling pins that you just meticulously placed because the fifth one wasn't quite vertical enough, and wobbled when you put it down), or losing a bunch of stuff to the quicksand floor of Red Rocket.

GunsNfknRoses, how does that hold up to say, Dogmeat? seems like everything I have placed doesn't sink, but dog sniffs it and it falls everywhere. does the same with magazines in the circular mag racks.

Thanks! I will try it out next time I play.

On an unrelated note, anyone know where I can find more bowling pins to replace the ones I lost? I don't remember where I got the others from. If you happen to know of a vendor who sells them or a location with bowling pins, I'd appreciate the tip! I was halfway to a full set, but now have to start over. For some reason I am determined to turn that corridor behind the counter in Red Rocket into my own personal bowling lane.

Try the northern part of the map, north-west of Salem, I beleive it was, where there's a whole little amusemant park. They have a bowling alley with tons of pins. Beware the robots =)

those examples are GORGEOUS, seriously GORGEOUS, but I've been unable to get anything to work right and it takes to f**king long only to have evrything fall through whatever items they are on. I love the net result, but I've only had nothing but sadness when returning to my settlements.

I've spent a lot of time trying to decorate Home Plate - looting Cabot House netted a lot of undamaged items but what bugs me is trying, for example, to put a toaster upright on a bench. Without knocking anything else off, that I have just spent too much time also trying to place the right way up. There's just no way I'm going to be able to get that clean umbrella into its stand. And then there's my kitchen table I'm trying to neatly lay out with clean plates, silverware and glasses and my companion keeps walking THROUGH the damn table and knocking everything off, the KLUTZ!

This is on PS4, btw.

OP, nice effort filling your shelves... you have more patience than me, that's for sure.

That is absolutely amazing!!!!! Props to you man!!!

But dumb noob question.......By "grab mode", do you mean actually picking it up (as if it were junk found on a quest) and then going into P.I.P boy and selecting drop?

nice

unfortunately that doesnt work for me :(

whenever i place anything (workshop or free grab mode) its either on the ground or flung into all 4 corners of my settlements at some point. sometimes it can take 4 or 5 cell reloads to happen but eventually it always happens. im still finding toasters, ashtrays etc etc etc every now and again around sanctuary somewhere from at least 100 hours real time ago lol!

the first time id decorated every pre war house and the 3 story one i built with all the day to day gear and stuff inall the dining rooms/kitchens/bedrooms/batrooms/living rooms/garages etc to come back later to find it flung and strewn across the town. that took so so so long it actually hurt a little when found it all ruined ha

its a shame how bad this is as id dearly love to decorate my settlements
