Ehhh. The things we put up with.
Anyway, I'm expecting a decent story, with this focus on narrative they've been promoting. Having a protagonist that talks may help us get over the hump of Bethesdas own lackluster campaign writings in the past.

I'm almost certain Bethesda believes "focus on narrative" means "more cutscenes".

Quite.

But for real though? If 'better story' translates to 'more restrictions' I'd rather get my better stories from other devs and let Beth continue to do what it's best at.

Yeah, if there is something BGS is known for, it's their intelligent, compelling story lines with complex, gray morality characters.

Like Skyrim, with Harkon, Miraak and especially Alduin.

Cynicism. I love it.
Cutscenes means talking. Talking means plot progression. Plot progression develops the story. So not entirely a bad thing.

:3

Cut-scenes mean passive experience, boredom and complete annihilation of any remaining immersion. Like Mass Effect - might as well watch a film and play Gears of War during.

Do you know why Half Life was revolutionary? Among other things, because it managed to tell story without cut-scenes or breaking the player from character. Bethesda seems to be going the exact opposite way (although the fact you can choose dialogue mode could mean it's optional, we'll see).

Ah yes, half life. The story of a theoretical physicist who gets told what to do a lot and can never get a word in edgewise.
I was never invested in Freeman. Thought he was a pushover and a schmuck.
Anyway, there is no perfected way of telling a story in video games, and people are gonna debate what works for them.

Good, you were never supposed to be invested in Freeman. You were the Freeman. :D

They said that you can choose whether you'll perceive the dialogue as an outside person from third person camera or as yourself in first person camera.

He who does not invest in himself, truly suffers a lack of love in himself.

Honestly, the YouTube series Mind of Freeman was the best thing to come out of Half Life. I even think it told a better story than Half Life 1 and 2 combined.

No, you don't get it. Freeman is invested as much as whoever plays him.

Mind of Freeman was quite hilarious at the beginning though :)

Correction, he's a lauded but ultimately empty and undeveloped character who serves as the player vessel while the action plays out around him, just mindlessly following orders.
If what you say is true, the Classic Doom Guy is an equally shining example.

Yes, a maze FPS with total of 3 paragraphs of story is a good example of anything writing related...

Aw, Alduin was such an interesting character, really made me think whether I did the right thing or not when conflicting with him!

Which was in itself gold compared to the thirty different ways they told Freemen to keep going along the path to the end credits.

It's probably about your wife and child going missing and one of them gets turned into a android but a weapon for a faction and the other one gone rogue in pain. Sad but realistic. Cure or join or kill.

Good is subjective, so far of the fallout games only New Vegas had a good main quest honestly.

You know, on a forum where people claim Fallout 3 had a good story and FNV was linear spin-off with uninteresting world and characters, not even what you say surprises me.

Oh well, moving on.

I hope so to.

F 3 had a typical "save the day" story.

While NV was more about politics and you're role in it.

I hope that F4 is a mix of these two.
