I like the Guard accents. They don't sound very much like Arnold to me. If anything they are kind of mixture of various real world Northern accents (Scandinavian-like). But remember Nords are Nords, they are not Swedes or Germans, etc.

So I think the Guard accent is fine.

But if you don't, maybe you should give them a break, after all they took an arrow in the knee!

They sound so horrible. Every time they open their mouth my ears begin to bleed. Even though (or maybe because) I'm german it sound just bad.

Am I the only one who feels like that?

I keep waiting for them to say "I'll be back"

My biggest problem is the large volume of American accents. I'm immersed in this awesome mystical midevil world when my immersion is suddenly shattered by a Daedra that sounds like he's from f***ing Wisconsin. Doesn't work for me.

I like the way Dragon age does it. All humans speak the Queen's English except Antivan's (Russian accent) and Orlais (French accent). Dalish elves sound kinda scottish (?) and city elves and dwarves sound American. There's some fricken order to it. Skyrim is just a freaking random mess dialect wise.

My favorite is the guy in the inn at Whiterun.
He's like "The security in whiterun is terrible. Shameful is what it is"
I think they hired a separate voice actor for this one, because his accent is so much more badass.
Anyone else know what I mean?

What annoys me more than their accent is their attitude. "So you're the new Companion...do you fetch their mead, or what?"

Anyone but a guard would've received a fist in the mouth, but because it would land me a hefty bounty, after killing him and all his friends, he walks away alive. Is their job not to protect people, and NOT start fights??!! It's like friggin cops in the US, they break all the laws because they're assigned to uphold them and thus can get away with it.

This.

They are NOT Swedes. They are Nords.

Bethesda obviously wanted them to have something besides American accents so they cooked something up. When you remember that they're fine.

I'm trying to remember where Arnold is from. Hungary? Anyway, it's not a Scandanavian country. So if they all sound like Arnold they obviously weren't trying for an authentic Scandanavian accent. And why should they for a fantasy country?

Arnold is from Austria.

(for those that are geographically challenged, that is in central Europe near Germany, and not in the southern hemisphere)

Yeah I hate that they hired http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Voice_Actors#Nords voice-actors too. Totally ruins the nordic feeling of Skyrim. American would have been far more suitable and immersive.

Which ones of those do you claim are Scandinavian?

Just wait until you meet Esbern!

(Edit: He changes voice actors quite noticable.)

Yes, but the Max von Sydow stuff is great because Mr. von Sydow is actually Swedish. I wish they'd managed to hire more Scandinavian voice actors. I think that's the point: why do some NPCs have Austrian accents, some mildly European-ish, some British, some American and some (the woman who rolls her R's) vaguely Central European Roma-ish? It's completely inconsistent and silly.

A lot better than when the NPCs completely change accents and voices in mid-conversation (aka Oblivion).

Maybe they should have given the guards Southern US accents -- "No lollygagging, ya'll"

What I'm annoyed about is that the NPCs don't have regional accents. In one area you'll find American, English, Irish, Welsh, German, Italian, Russian ... It's so bizarre. Hopefully Bethesda plot out their NPCs' positions on a map for the next one (not impossible; I hear they go to all sorts of lengths to provide a realistic world) so that the accents stay consistent throughout the game.

The Germanic accent is absolutely the worst, though.

Also annoying is when you meet the guy with the hornet helmet in The Bannered Mere.

"The secuwrrety is whiterrrun is tewrribwel"

He's like Tadeus in the Looney Toons

I swear they must have gotten Arnold Swarchenegger to do voice acting in this game, because the brother of Jarl Balgruff, and many other NPC's sound just like him to me lol.

I'm pretty sure he does not. He's voiced by the great Max Von Sydow, and unless I'm horribly mistaken or wasn't paying enough attention, I heard his voice all along. (He's the older priest in the Exorcist, among other things.)

On topic, I agree. There are too many Austrians and Germans in this game. I think this is because there isn't a clear Scandinavian English accent, but rather people speaking poor English. The Arnie-accent is more distinct from other accents.
It does bug me a bit, though, because Skyrim is Sweden, Norway and Finland in my opinion, not central Europe.

I don't know if they tried to make the accent sound Scandinavian. I'm Norwegian and I know that Americans have a misconception of our accent.
I was pretty ready for Scandinavian atmosphere, but instead I got Arnold incarnated into every second guard I met. I don't really know how to put words on it, but I assume it's like having a game set in Texas, yet everyone is British. Pretty funny though...

That is an Austrian accent. You sir, must visit Austria. I did, and EVERY single man you talk to sounds like Arnold. It's one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. :D

I think all the accents sound fantastic. They are very authentic and Nordic sounding. They did a great job...

Its a terrible shame, but often happens in movies and on tv as well.

For some reason a lot of American actors think every European language sounds like German.
Though, actually, the guards are more Austrian.
Not Nordic in any case.
