Horrible Accents of the Nord (Guards) in Skyrim

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 11:19 pm

They sound so horrible. Every time they open their mouth my ears begin to bleed. Even though (or maybe because) I'm german it sound just bad.

Am I the only one who feels like that?

Dude, I know. And the vampires? None of them sound like Edward from Twilight. They don't sparkle or anything! OMG this game is just killing my immersion!

I swear they must have gotten Arnold Swarchenegger to do voice acting in this game, because the brother of Jarl Balgruff, and many other NPC's sound just like him to me lol.

Just wait until you meet Esbern!

(Edit: He changes voice actors quite noticable.)

Ulfric's voice is the worst, in my opinion. They hired a voice actor who insists on talking in the lowest part of his register possible, instead of just hiring a voice actor with a deep voice. So the actor constantly runs out of breath or ability to go any lower when finishing sentences. He sounds like he's about to pass out. Maybe that's why he's always staring at the ceiling when talking to me, he's trying not to collapse.

The accents in Skyrim are pretty odd, many sound like a cross between Scandinavian and Canadian, some sound slightly Italian (can't remember which races) and the Khajiit sound a little Hispanic.

Although all in all I think it works, it just takes some getting used too.

Eeeh, what? Are you serious? I neither like twilight nor the way edward talks. Is there something special about the way he talks?

It appears sarcasm is lost on you kind of easily. Understandable, hard to gather sarcasm from text sometimes.

I believe he was attempting to make the point that it's not possible to please everyone, and due to the extreme amount of time, money, and space it would take to give the guards multiple voices and lines of dialog you kind of get stuck with an often laughably odd sounding group of guards.

It might be your nationality. I seem to remember in the German versions of the Terminator movies, Arnie's accent was changed from those in the English and US films, because his accent made him sound like a German farmer instead of a baddass. I'm not sure where I heard this, but if it's true, this may shed some light. :P

The guards sound South African to me. It's quite bizarre, given the strong Germanic sound of the Jarl's brother etc. I know it's not meant to be Earth, but it's a distinctively non-European accent standing in for Nordic.

I picked up the multiple actors for Esbern thing too... maybe some hastily rewritten lines.

Some great voices in Skyrim though: female dunmer, the khajiit, Ysolda (might be a generic voice?), like the Arnie guy, and Esbern sounds great, through I think he might have recorded his lines after a few beers heh.

How hard could it be to have hired some small-time scandinavian actors for the guards?
I dont know if the "Arnie" guards is intended to sound funny or "barbarian" , but they are only mildly amusing for a short time.

But lucky me, I play the german version and they sound normal. (@allgermans: Imagine the khajiit with "ruhrpott" german  )

Yeah I hate that they hired http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Voice_Actors#Nords voice-actors too. Totally ruins the nordic feeling of Skyrim. American would have been far more suitable and immersive.

Why did they bother giving them bad Scandanavian accents anyway? We are in their own country, they'd speak their own language, which I am pretty sure is not English, delivered in a bad Arnie accent.

I for one love the Arnold references, they all used to say "Outlander" or "I'm watching you...scum" and then they took an arro....

I don't like them either. Being from Sweden it irritates me to hear so clearly that one is from Sweden, one from Finland and one from Germany. The Swede is the worst.

Flavor. But I don't know why they didn't given them REAL Scandi/Germanic accents. It's not like there are a shortage of Germans and Norseman who speak proper English. But this is Bethesda logic: if you have to do something, hire someone who doesn't quite know what he's doing. Or so it seems.

"Imma wepon in homan form, unsheathe me ann point me at the enama!"

Yeah, I agree. The accent is bad. Sounds like they just hired some Ameriacan and told him to sound Europeam.
Why no German, or Scandinavian?
