Horrible

I'm glad I didn't buy it day one. Been watching some Let's Plays and they did exactly what I knew they would do and I'm not even talking about the dumbing down of game mechanics. The story is super locked down the voice is intrusive and over simplifies the dialogue choices.

Overall I think it'll still be a fun game but it feels like an off-shoot of Fallout rather than a main game.

I do like that more thought has been given into companions, the crafting system, and house building though.

...except SPECIAL was designed to have skills by its creators. Yeah it took them two weeks to make it but none the less it has persisted this far. Look at the bright side, it was not called GURPS.

Wish everything could be modded. Dialog skill perk checks that, additional quest branching, making characters more interesting, a reputation system with consenquences, repair system. Some of these can't be modded at all and others will feel out of place since they will not have the voice acting of that npc. My guess is that repair for example will need constant scripts at work and some gui...

No, the first one on consoles was the one that is not talked about in civilized company.

This would have been easier if the modders were not on the hook for Brain & Courtney impersonations for the added lines.

You just had to mention Fallout:POS edition. Now we have to burn down some poor sod's house; are you happy now?

I completely disagree. To be honest, when you hit level 50 in New Vegas, if you play like I do (max out int/comprehension/skillful) you're literally close to having every skill at 90+. With the way Fallout 4 is set up, if skills were included in the game, you'd max them out in no time.

Also, I've always felt that SPECIAL and skills didn't mix very well. SPECIAL had nearly no affect on skills, and skills out shined SPECIAL in every way. Poor perception? Just max out skill in guns/energy weapons asap and it doesn't matter anymore!

Bad agility? Doesn't matter! Just max out sneak and you're good to go!

The only time I found SPECIAL useful was when you hadn't gotten a skill up to a certain level to meet a speech check requirement.

Fallout 4, now SPECIAL heavily affects your game play. I started my character off with low perception, she can barely hit the side of a barn even when aiming from 100 feet away. This is how SPECIAL should have been... but SPECIAL can't be that way if skills are there.

This is just a horrible post. This getting ride of class skills was great. The greatest problem in the other fallout games if your distribution of skill points. Don't get me started on Elder Scrolls, spread sheets galore.
If you where a veteran of fallout you know the first thing you level is lockpicking repair science and even survival. If you don't you lock yourself out of content.
This game basicly forces you to come back rather than force yourself to specialize.
You find a good gun that your not proficient with in other fallout games you couldn't justify using it. But in this game everything is useful and has a purpose.

I played for 11 hours straight, and had a blast the whole time. No, it's not the same as FONV or FO3, but I find that a positive thing. I love those games, but I bought a new game so I could play a new game, eh? Some people would gripe if you hung 'em with a new rope... :)

I guess it feels a bit dumbed down compared to past Fallouts. But then I've only put about 3 hours in and I've barely been able to play with skills too much. But no karma or weapon degradation were the first things I noticed.

I'm enjoying the weapons not degrading too because any double ups can be dismantled into crafting items. Speaking of, that whole part of the game is giving me a headache. Can't wait until I understand it fully.

Spread sheets galore? Seriously? Greatest problem of fallout games was distribution of skills? Traits were a problem too, extra needless stuff - LOL they actually had negative bonuses in them, totally silly. And who needs all these dialog options, karma nonsense or annoying degradation.

You know what - automatic leveling ftw, who needs all those troublesome, spreadsheet-y numbers n stuff, just give me something to shoot - power armor best change ever!

I honestly don't see what the complaining is about. The only reason I'm not playing right now is because I have a paycheck to go earn. I've been playing since 6:30 this morning and I've had zero complaints except the super rare crash, but I'm back in the game in ten seconds, and the occasional framerate jitter but that's also super rare.

So the problem is that it doesn't give you closure or...? (no idea what the ending is just speculating)

Cant talk about that, but its not the ending by itself (the history), is the mission structure.

That's one thing I don't miss at all. It was just annoying and had me stop my adventure for repairs.

I take it that you only refer to FO3, and have not played Fallout or Fallout 2?

Skills got rolled into Perks - it's basically all perks now (can't say I mind this - I suggested something similar on this forum a few years back.) I've in the past talked about how I feel a lot of these revisions are a sign of Bethesda actually putting more thought into the ruleset than have in their past couple of titles.

(Fallout 3's system and leveling suffered from marked foundational issues in the ruleset - much of which stemmed from them just kind of plopping an existing ruleset into a different game and then making oddly arbitrary changes to it without much forethought. With Fallout 4 they've actually gone through and not only created a levelling system that is compatible with the scope and scale of the game but balanced out the attributes and perks while thinking these systems through. "Dumbed down" strikes me as a knee-jerk reaction in this case. I feel like if you actually take some time to think out the ramifications, there's actually a fairly elegant system at play in there - much more so than what Bethesda has brought to the table in their past few games.)
