Horror Novels

Post » Fri Apr 02, 2010 5:54 am

I'm looking for a good horror novel. I don't really like Stephen King's books, so could anyone recommend another author or novel? Are there any novels that give you the "creepypasta" type of feeling? Also, is H.P. Lovecraft a good author? I've heard good things about his work.

Dean Koontz, John Saul. You eliminated my favorite writer though... lol. I have a bunch of other authors but none that really stand out as much as those three do.

Edit: Well, depending on how you classify him, Steve Alten has some good books that qualify as horror. His Meg series is awesome!

Some of H.P. Lovecraft's stuff is good ( The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Pickman’s Model, The Dunwich Horror) while other stuff, not so much. Overall I like Lovecraft. If you end up liking his stuff then check out Brian Lumley's Titus Crow series, they take place in Lovecraft's "universe" & Titus Crow is kind of a Sherlock Holmes meets Indiana Jones character.

Other authors to check out:

Peter Straub (Ghost Story, Shadow Land)
Joe Hill (Stephen King's son, Heart Shaped Box))
Clive Barker - Too many to name
Neil Gaiman - not really a horror author but liked pretty much anything by him
Dean Koontz (loved the Odd Thomas series)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Park from Bret Easton Ellis. One of the creepiest books I've read in a good while.

Not really a big horror buff myself, but Song of Kali by Dan Simmons made my head hurt- because of how often my hair tried to stand straight up.

Get the H. P. Lovecraft: Tales (Library of America) if you are going for a Lovecraft collected works book....

If you are into Horror Manga I'd suggest Junji Ito...

William Peter Blatty is the first that comes to mind as far as contemporary.

Classical Gothic Lit can be a bit campy and mushy, but definitely has some horror. Shelley and Stoker are good examples.
