Horseback fighting

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:35 am

One thing I thought was really missing in Oblivion was the fact that you could not fight on horseback, I really got pissed when I was galloping in the wild and I run across some conjurers or necromancers because all I could do was run away or get my ass handed to me while taking 5 seconds to get off my horse. :banghead:

Basically I want horseback fighting to be implemented in Skyrim but at a penalty/buff (more penalty than buff) of some sort based on what you are currently doing on the horse (galloping, running, or just standing) and here are what I think the penalties should be:

1. Melee weapons (galloping): the time between your swings is increased by 4x (plus you have a small window of attacking because your going so fast :bolt: ), but your attacks do 1.5x the damage and a higher chance of staggering or knocking back the oppenent
Melee weapons (running): the time between your swings is increased by 2x
Melee weapons (standing): the time between your swings is increased by 1.25x
2. Bows (galloping): It is very difficult to aim (no duh your galloping :bolt: ) but your attacks do 1.5x the damage and higher chance of staggering or knocking back the opponent
Bows (running): It is moderately difficult to aim
Bows (standing): I cant thing of a good penalty for this :obliviongate:
3. Magic (galloping): It is moderately difficult to aim and you cannot channel spells (flamethrower) :flamethrower: , but your spells can knock back your opponents
Magic (running): It is somewhat difficult to aim and you cannot channel spells (flamethower) :flamethrower:
Magic (standing): I cant thing of a good penalty for this :obliviongate:

Feel free to post any ideas you have that you think are better than I have posted above this and please insert ideas for the last part of #2 and #3

I don't even think the confirmed if there will be mounts yet. But if there are horses I would like to see horse back fighting.

Of course there'll be mounts! And mounted combat is a must, Oblivion was really tedious in that aspect. Just have a separate swinging animation, and the ability to use bows as well... and crossbows :P

If there is mounted combat I will make a Nord character name Attila. His specialty will be horse archery.

Of course I want to be overpowered while on horseback, being able to tear through my foes like a hot glaive through butter. Enemies should aim for the horse if you are on it though, for instance an arrow into the neck of your horse would cause your mount to careen and topple, sending you crashing through the air for substantial amounts of damage.

Perhaps a bit of both? For example, you get a penalty to hit but your attack power is increased and you occasionally knock people off their feet.
On the other hand, the people can kill your horses which causes you to take a little health damage.

Yes.
It would actually make me want to get a horse instead of like Oblivion where I avoided those animals as if they were plague.

Isnt Skyrim mostly like, mountains and snow? I wouldnt think youd be doing much galloping there.

Personally I think horses should either be removed altogether or they need to be implemented well. In Oblivion theyre more a curse than a blessing because you cant quick dismount, and you dont NEED them with all the fast travel points.

If they made fast travel only for main cities(or holds) instead of EVERY damn cave and backwater farm then a horse would actually be worth having, if they do it well.

You're ideas are nice. They're like a primitive version of what has been implemented into Mount and Blade. Therefore, Bethesda should copy Mount and Blade, with some tweaks to maybe allow the horses greater maneuverability (even steppe horses in Mount and Blade couldn't limb hills very well).

Obviously cavalry would be more powerful than infantry on regular terrain, but you have to look at the downsides: if you're immobile, you can't defend yourself as easily on a horse; if your horse falls, you're vulnerable; if your horse hits something, you're vulnerable; archery accuracy is awful while moving at high speeds; there are places that infantry can hold (like a narrow pass) which cavalry could not.

From the podcast with Todd Howard it seems to me that mounts are still an undecided. You can read more about it here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1164509-edited-transcript-of-the-gi-podcast/

Certainly, but only if Bethesda ensured the AI is just as capable of fighting well on horseback. Something tricky to implement, I can imagine.

In Daggerfall, you could swing your weapon with impunity on your mount and moved so quickly that the enemies never had a chance of catching up to you. There should be some interesting penalties to mounted combat in Skyrim: for example, perhaps if you lose too much stamina, you fall off of your horse? Crippling or outright killing your opponent's horse should be just as viable a strategy as directly attacking them, as well.

I think there is an easy way to prevent people from tanking with a mount. If an npc attacks your mount then it throws you.

Having said that I'm hoping if Beth can't get mounted combat in the game that leave mounts out of it.

From what you've just said about the difficulty of casting a flamethrower spell on horseback, I reckon horses are not going to feature with this games already featured magic system already in place.

But for future Elder Scrolls games I would like Mount&Blade horseback combat with Red Dead Redemption animations in a open world designed for horses, not a small world where you always stop to go into caves or fight individual enemies.
