Horses arent in Skyrim

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:54 am

To summarise

-We don't know yet
-Red Dead Redemption has good horses
-More horses in games these days
-Oblivion wasn't good enough implementation for Skyrim (as opposed to every single game except RDR)

So yeah, the absolutist approach people are assuming they are going with is utter crap.

BINGO Precisely what Todd said.

I don't see what the problem is. Horses were fine in Oblivion, yet he says they weren't happy with them. Why? Just give us the same horse mechanics that were in Oblivion, if it isn't broke don't fix it.

I simply don't beelive claims like thes e without a source link. I've heard too many wide claims like this in the past to beleive this.

On mounts (meaning riding horses, not just horses in general):
"Something we’re messing with, and we don’t know where it’s going to end up. There were things with the Oblivion horses. We liked having them. They weren’t the greatest implementation of horses. And now you see things come out like Red Dead. There are more horses in games, and we feel like just the basic implementation we did in Oblivion isn’t going to be good enough. We are currently attempting things with that, and I don’t know where it’s going to end up.” - Todd Howard, Q&A podcast.

Horse can be seen in the trailer about halfway through by the windmill.

Carriages also confirmed to be in the current build.

I was refering to the claims of the op. makes a wide claim with no source, ergo I don't believe it.

The title the OP put is wrong if taken as a direct statement, as was suggested.

I have shown you to the proof that their post is correct, in that they are not sure about the implement them (at least as mounts). However, they seem to think not sure in this case means "probably not", which I disagree with.

I have heard news my Todd Howard saying that they are not sure they will implement horses. I found it odd that a fantasy/medieval would not have horses. What do you guys think of this?

Couldn't possibly care less, myself. If they're not in, I won't miss'em just like I didn't in Morrowind. If they are, I'll probably ignore'em anyway like I did in Oblivion.

I liked the horses in Oblivion, the black one was cool and I hope they come back even with little improvement. Saddlebags would be nice too.

The biggest reason why i didn't like horses in Oblivion was that they were a free pass from city to city.. You get on a horse and nothing can catch you because almost nothing else is on a mount and even if they were they couldn't fight while in it. Also if theres not going to be mounted combat its another point not to have them since you don't want to dismount every time you wanna the creatures a chance at fighting you. I'm pretty sure even dragons would become buggy do to people not stopping to fight them.

100% agree. Horses were great in theory and a pain in reality. Either make them useful and naturally fit or dump them, the game's gonna be great anyway.

They're still working on the mounts. They've said that unless they can do them well, they won't put them in. But they are working on them. I'm sure we'll get them, if they can create dragons which fly through the skies and burn down settlements on a whim, they can make horses.

I'm not sure I get you. Does it not make sense that a bandit on foot (for example) would not be able to catch a mounted rider? It doesn't have any gameplay advantage except to not die from a generic unimportant bandit or animal, you don't gain anything from this situation, so it's not OP or anything. And if they were totally useless why include them at all? They're meant to be a utility. Not to mention that you could run at least as fast at higher levels anyway.

And creatures could attack your horse while you were on it.

I will personally be very disappointed if horses don’t make it in. Other than not being able to cast spells or use my bow while riding I never really had a problem with them to be honest. Were they perfect? No, but there were many other things in Oblivion that were not perfect either. But I took care of my steed and protected her as I protected my own life, so I never had an issue of them dying unless I was flat out careless.

It was a big part of the RP for me in doing so because I use fast travel very, very little, but I rode my horse everywhere I went. Riding my horse actually created quite a bit of excitement and adrenalin rush for me especially after completing a quest stage and “making haste” back to wherever I needed to go to report in for the next part of the quest. Certainly, I’ll still play the game and I’m sure it will be awesome. But I will feel like I’m missing a huge part of immersion without my horse.

i hope horses are in and i hope the fix the speed thing... maybe make our characters walk a little slower than in OB (closer to MW or in between) that was riding a horse has an advantage to just running... also for another advantage they should have saddle bags and depending on the horse strength they can carry some of your load for you.... and for my opinion on quality of the horses i dont have to have them to be RDR quality (that was just awesome) but they def need to be upgraded alot from OB.

I thought the horses were kind of dumb actually. I think they were rather clunky and added almost as an afterthought; they were hard to use as compared to just running around and after all.. you couldn't attack from horseback!

I have a vision of being able to charge into a small skirmish on a horse, knocking people aside/shooting arrows off horseback. I think it'd be fairly easy to implement, and make horses a whole lot more worthwhile.

If they're in, I'm sure they'll be awesome. I just hope you can whistle for them to come to you like in RDR. except, toned down a bit, as the horse could be gone, dead, across the map or whatever and still come to you. I don't want that.

this was stated quite a while ago. What was actually said was that nothing is sure, but Todd also said he didn't want to not have them. This is because they obviously only want to include them if they can make serious improvements from Oblivion on the animations and feel of horse riding. Since that was stated, the gameplay trailer released, in which you can see a horse standing to the side in the shot with the windmill. Also, concept art on the official site shows a horse. I think it's fair to say that there will likely be horses, but it's still not a sure thing. I'd go so far as to say it's a 90% chance that they will be included, but there's still a 10% chance that they won't.

Probably what will affect their final decision on whether or not to include horses is whether or not they can develop an efficient mounted combat system that competes with other games today that have mounted combat, like Red Dead, Assassin's Creed, even Zelda Twilight Princess.

Wait a minute... I just remembered, they confirmed "carriages" that could take you to new places. I can only imagine that these "carriages" will be pulled by horses. Either horses or some other mountable creature. Unless they've decided to use silt striders again.

Gameplay problems aside I wouldn't mind if horses were dropped, or at least sidelined. I find it a bit surprising that so many are focussed on horses since this is a fantasy world where Giant Fleas are used as transportation!

So forget about horses, where are the mammoth mounts, ridable bears, sabre-tooth steeds? What happened to creativity and imagination?
