Horses arent in Skyrim

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:21 am

I have heard news my Todd Howard saying that they are not sure they will implement horses. I found it odd that a fantasy/medieval would not have horses. What do you guys think of this?

I don't see what the problem is. Horses were fine in Oblivion, yet he says they weren't happy with them. Why? Just give us the same horse mechanics that were in Oblivion, if it isn't broke don't fix it.

Exactly.

Horses in Oblivion were broke, so they're trying to fix them.

The thread title and the following post contain two completely different statements. May want to edit that.

Well, I haven't seen or heard anything that confirms that, so I won't believe it till then. However, I would be very sad not to see horses in Skyrim. I didn't ride them often, but their presence added to the feel of the game, and I don't want to see them go... :shakehead:

And Fallout 3 had mutated cows, that doesn't mean we could ride them.

Wait...WHAT? Horses were fine in Oblivion?

So you didn't mind the fact that you could actually run faster than your horse? You didn't mind the fact that your horse was just a solid block incapable of turning swiftly? You didn't mind that when you were standing still and wanted to turn around your horse's entire body would turn at one time instead of his head first? You didn't mind the fact that his tail seemed to be made of wood and never moved? Please tell me you're joking.

Morrowind didn't have horses and IMO it was better than Oblivion, which did have horses

It was in one of the GI interviews, maybe the podcast, I can't remember, But they don't want swag horses that don't live up to the likes seen in RDR, as I imagine they won't live up to the rest of Skyrim. It's all or nothing for them on horses, which is fine by me.

There are horses in the game world but we might not be able to ride them. They're trying to implement mounts, but they want it to be much better than in Oblivion. Horse riding in Oblivion was awful.

I have to say that I thought horses were certainly "broke" in OB. Bad animations, no mounted combat, horse always dying, etc, etc. It was better just to go on foot.

No, they said the riding in Oblivion wasn't as good as RDR. They didn't say anything to the note of "no horses". Horses were already in a trailer so it's already coded into the game

There are horses in Skyrim. Whether we will be able to use them as a means of fast travel or not is what is currently being debated by BGS. They did not like how they were implemented in Oblivion, and we will likely only see them as mounts in Skyrim if they are vastly improved.

Horses in Oblivion were fine back then, in retrospect I see how they handled rather roughly though.

Sure, I hope they get them to handle better, but I also get the feeling they're considering a larger aspect of it, namely if horses fit with the rugged and hard to traverse landscape of Skyrim. If they don't, by all means, leave them out!

ha, i don't know if i would agree with the whole if it ain't broke don't fix it thing. all one has to do is play red dead redemption to realize that there is plenty of room for improvement for the horse mechanics. if they don't feel like doing it right i'd rather see them not included.

You being able to run faster than your horse has nothing to do with horses themselves, thats just stupid player character mechanics. Players shouldn't be able to run faster than Shadowmere, that's absurd even in a fantasy game.

No, I didn't mind that my horse couldn't turn swiftly. How is that a big deal? This was Oblivion not Kentucky Derby horse race game.

No, I didn't mind that the horses whole body turned at once, who cares?

No, I didn't mind the tail. Skyrim could be made with Morrowind graphics for all I care.

Sorry, I grew up in the 90s and played games my entire life. I'm more concerned about story, lore, items, and quest than something as trivial as horse animations. In 10 years you'll be saying Skyrim looks like [censored] anyway.

They want to avoid the direct comparision against other games with far superior horses (Red Dead Redemption, Shadow of the Collosus, Zelda: TP, Mount&Blade, Assassin's Creed).

In all our wishes for the Elder Scrolls XI, of course we all want horses but I guess people would criticise poor horse mechanics more harshly than no horses.

Fast travel made horses irrelevant anyway and they were really weak. Horses maxed out at a low level and were too squishy even with armour. So I wouldn't shed any tears if they weren't in the game, it makes exploration all the more interesting anyway. Rather than just riding everywhere you fast travel to a town, then branch out slowly from that town sometimes in several directions, see where you end up. This is what made Morrowind so fascinating.

Disregard the OP this is a baselss statement

On mounts and vehicles
We have boats but you can’t sail them around. In terms of mounts and horses, it’s something we’re looking into and want to have but we’re still messing with it. We’re definitely not ruling it out. We want to make sure it’s a gameplay addition and they’re not just there. Horses have come a long way in game so we want to make sure we’re paying off on that. It’s paying off right now, but if it doesn’t work we’ll pull it.

i'd just like a horse so i see how many of the 7000 steps he can fall down with a dragonshout, like a bit slinky

They seems to working on it now. If they can make a system that works and it's good, it will stay, otherwise no horseriding whatsoever.

Something tells me if they ax it, people would complain about cutting out things instead of improving them...

You're being childish, this is a discussion about the quality of the horses in Oblivion, clearly the fact that they turned on the spot the same speed as a slow motion robot turtle is sort of relevant. Nobody is asking for the Kentucky Derby horse race game. Stop being ridiculous.

No, I didn't mind that the horses whole body turned at once, who cares?

Obviously a lot of people, including a bunch of important Bethesda staff. Since they didn't like the Oblivion horses, and the animations would've definitely been a big part of that.
