Horses Confirmed in, does this lead to mounted combat?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 2:54 am

Personally I don't care if it's in or not - the idea of mounted combat doesn't really interest me at all.

But from another point of view I hope it's not in, just on the fear that, if it IS in? There'll be some reason or need to force you to use it. And that would svck for those of us who 1) don't really like it, and 2) still have nightmares about how awful horses were in Oblivion. :)

(the only game with some form of "mounted combat" I've played is WoW, and the jousting minigame in that isn't very inspiring either.)

For me mounted combat is a huge deal. Mount and Blade has set a high standard and of course I wouldn't expect that level of simulation in TES, but yes I think once they chose to include mounts in the game (Oblivion), the natural next step is adding mounted combat. Probably not in Skyrim, most likely in TES VI. I'm off to the Beyond Skyrim thread to post this wish there :D

I would be surprised if mounted combat isn't included. I mean that seems like logical progression from what we got in Oblivion. I don't think anyone wants to take the time to dismount in order to fight something unless it's very fast and seamless.

Not really seeing any of it. And don't you think that part of the Obl horse awfulness was their uselessness and tedium? Both of which were caused by lack of mounted combat and to lesser degree by the lack of saddle-bags to carry extra inventory.

Then quote him correctly, and better come up with some decent arguments for why that statement is 100% false, because it surely isn't.
Whatever he said, it included RDR's horses in a laudatory way, and his desire to make better horses than those in Oblivion, so it seems the statement is already 50% correct.

"Something we’re messing with, and we don’t know where it’s going to end up. There were things with the Oblivion horses. We liked having them. They weren’t the greatest implementation of horses. And now you see things come out like Red Dead. There are more horses in games, and we feel like just the basic implementation we did in Oblivion isn’t going to be good enough. We are currently attempting things with that, and I don’t know where it’s going to end up."

This statement does not say that they are using Red Dead Redemption as their standard. In fact it only mentions it in passing. His standard as far as he has said is "better than the basic implementation of Oblivion".

They already said, if they fail to improve horses from what they were in oblivion they will make them unrideable, just that horses have been confirmed doesn't tell us anything.

If there isn't mounted combat, they shouldn't add horses too.

No, the awfulness was how the horses stuck you in 3rd person, were animated terribly, controlled terribly, and inexplicably slowed down the framerate. Couldn't really care less about mounted combat & cargo space. You can carry plenty as it is.

(And "so, reduce the amount you can carry" isn't a solution to that - that's just a way of forcing people to use horses, by balancing cargo capacity around assuming that everyone has a horse.)

No, "OMG mounted combat is SO COOL!" isn't a universal opinion. Personally, I really don't get what the attraction is. But, hey, that's what makes us different people - different opinions. :)

And even if all these hings were implemented perfectly, having to dismount every... bleeding... time you had to fight something and usually have the horse and the PC get a few hits while the animation was playing still would have made the Obl implementation awful.

And since I prefer to play low-str characters such as mages, extra carrying capacity in exchange for spending money on a horse would have been very welcome, yes.

Basically, the Obl horses just didn't have any benefits. While riding, athletics wouldn't rise, you had to dismount all the time to fight, no extra carrying capacity and keeping them alive and finding one's way back to them was tricky. Who would want something like this, again? Riding a horse was like one never-ending escort quest!

I have a feeling they wouldnt have kept horses in if they didnt add some kind of mounted combat.

The only problem I see is the two weapon thing---how can you hold two weapons and still (adequately) control a horse? I think the animations would be difficult, that "target magnetism" would be neccesary. We'll see.

It would be awesome to see it but it depends if Bethesda think it's worth investing time in

I will be on foot with my 2 handed warhammer smacking horses in the faces and laughing as the riders get crushed by their mounts. Sounds like fun gameplay to me!

Having naturally animated horses is a must for mounted combat. I'd be very excited to discover this feature in Skyrim, but I'd be 10x more disappointed if it's done in an Oblivionish way (stiff?)
