Horses in Skyrim are pathetic.

Post » Thu Jun 12, 2014 10:55 pm

Todd Howard before Skyrim release...

"We are going to improve horses a lot more in Skyrim"

That's funny, cos they're a LOT worse than the horses in Oblivion.

The pathetic sprint time for horses in Skyrim make them not even worth using. Compare to riding the black cheydinhal horse in Oblivion, I could ride across the world and feel the exhileration of riding this great steed.

In Skyrim I feel I am riding an old wreck whatever horse I ride. Its just pointless using them.

I agree that the stamina and travel speed of Skyrim's horses leaves much to be desired. Don't use them myself.

I already knew who made this thread just by looking at the title.

Anyways, they do feel a little wonky.

Physics of them are good... but its a little lame that my world saving warrior has a horse than gets tired after 50 yards. They really need to fire the dev who was responsible for horses. He should not be on the team.

yea no I like the skyrim horses better. They are not suppose to be racing horses and I still find them faster than running. The thing that annoyed me about vanilla horses are how they act like leroy jenkins around enemies.

I do wish that you can ride horses in first person, like in Oblivion. In Oblivion, horse riding is fun but in Skyrim, it's a bit of a pain.

I think the OP has been watching too many Hollywood movies. Real medieval knight horses were akin carthorses rather than the stallions you see in movies. They had to be big, heavy and muscle bound, because they were the ancient equivalent of tanks.

You know that if you sprint your horse, take a breather, sprint again, take a breather, and continue doing this, your horse will sprint much longer. Besides, the horse is meant to be used as a sort of travel. Beats walking and running. I use convenient horses, and one can set the stats for their horse in the menu, including health, stamina and speed. Also if they are to help you fight or run. The horse can also be used as a war horse that will follow you and help you fight if you put the settings right. I rather have a horse run, for it would get in the way. I rather not have the horse follow me, for it interferes with my sneaking.

But to each their own. I like the hoses much better in Skyrim than Oblivion. But that is my opinion. Besides there are other things to complain about besides the horses.

I've never bothered with horses much in general throughout TES.

the horses could have been better. I really enjoyed how they were done in Red Dead Redemption.

As for oblivion horses being better? What little I did play of Oblivion, I did use a horse... I remember hating it! :D

I'd have preferred a horse you could whistle for like in RDR instead of one that fast traveled with you and agro'd the enemy.

I disagree with the OP. One of the things I didn't like about horses in Oblivion was the fact that they move at two speeds: a walk and a full gallop. There is no canter, no trot, no half-speed. I don't always like riding at full speed, and I don't like moving too slow, I've always wanted a set of middle speeds. Skyrim has this.

And there are things Oblivion has that Skyrim does not, but overall I wouldn't describe horses in this game as pathetic'.

M'aiq can travel fast across the land. Some lazy types take carriages and horses. It is all the same to M'aiq.

I thought they were an improvement over the horses from Oblivion, though it was a shame they removed the 1st person view... The mounted combat needs some work though.

Not too long ago I didn't care about horses. But recently they've started to annoy me. Constant third person view, and you can't feed the damn things! And that is just on TOP of what you said.

The worse part is that not ONLY did Bethesda [censored] up the horses, but they also [censored] up the dragon riding thing as well. ALL THE DRAGON DOES IS FLY AROUND IN A [censored] CIRCLE, and if you want to move it to another location you have to FAST TRAVEL, RUINING THE IMMERSION AND TAKING AWAY THE POINT.

But they could have greater health.. I just hate it when a dragon comes down and cooks my 1000 coin investment.. Other than that I wouldn't mind the slowness, though it's faster then hoofing it.

Horses in Skyrim are much better than in Oblivion. My reasons:

1. Moving them around is much more responsive. When was the last time you tried to turn your horse left/right in Oblivion? remember how clunky it was? Skyrim's controls are like silk compared to that.

2. In Skyrim you can fight from a horse. Cyrodiil was as populated by wolves as is Skyrim. Remember how annoying it was to either dismount or flee every single time you found some wolf in oblivion? In Skyrim you don't need to. Plus, powerattacks from horse look very cool.

I however agree that the forced 3rd person is regrettable. Oblivion horses were better in that regard.

Horses' low endurance is also a bit annoying but it can be mitigated by pausing between sprints (i.e. sprint - run - sprint - run) so that stamina recovers.

Still much faster than walking or sprinting your way around, even if you don't make the horses sprint themselves. What are you in such a rush for, anyway? With the addition of being able to fast-travel to any major hold immediately, and each hold respectively placed across the map, it would take 5 minutes tops to reach somewhere you can't fast travel too, and that's before you unlock lesser locations that might be in an even relatively closer distance.

There's no need to be able to force your horse to sprint for lengthy amounts of time. I've yet to face an enemy that can keep up to my horse at a normal pace, and I can sacrifice a couple minutes of travel time.

Hear. hear; that's the worst thing about Skyrim's horses--they travel with you when you're not riding them and they attack the first hostile critter they see. Because of this, I generally avoid horses.

That, and how you cannot pull your follower up behind you on horseback; even if they couldn't engage in combat and had to ride along until you dismounted and/or ordered them to, that would make horses much more fun. It's just a downer when I can't bring my follower along for a ride.

Also, they could be a little faster. Not racehorse fast, but I've never felt they were much faster than running. EDIT: is this a console thing? I've never noticed horses being able to do more than walk or what seems to be a trot.
