Horses in Skyrim

More natural, less wooden animations.

I thought the animations in Oblivion were good compared to other games. I mean, the horse animations in Assassin's Creed 2 looked like they were taken right out of a Mickey Mouse-cartoon...

I would like to have my horse
Purchasable wagons and carts sounds like a great idea.

I don't see much reason to change things as far as horses go from Oblivion. They seemed to work pretty well in that game IMO.

Wtf?

You didnt need them in oblivion as you could simply fast travel everywere. They were pointless.

Now if the fast travel was like morrowinds BUT with less isolated area's then woot throw in horses With better animation and control...and mounted combat.

Agreed that the horses in Oblivion were pointless.

To make them useful they need to:
- be faster! Characters run too fast at 100 speed skill. The character should run slower and the horse faster, then it will really be valuable.
- have their own inventory.
plus
- there should be much more neutral creatures! The horse becomes a pain if you have to dismount every 5 seconds
plus
- mounted combat would add a lot to horses. Fighting dragons while riding, choosing (crafting yourself?) horse armor would be nice.

Maybe horses should be made more of a personal thing. To bond with them. I mean you can buy from a diversity of places and races like in Oblivion, but the more you invest time in one particular horse, the better it will be in combat. Perhaps mounts could have their own skills, and the more you use them, the better they are in battle.

Better horse mechanics(something similar to the 'creed')
Fluid mounts and dismounts, without re-setting my camera everytime!
Some form of mounted combat would be nice but not necessary if they have smooth dismounts.
Saddlebags that can carry items and relieve your encumbrance. In addition to the speed ratings each breed has in oblivion, add weight ratings to how much gear each breed can carry, if some form of saddlebags are implemented.
Maybe a horse with a cart attachment for moving all our gear and plunder, for those wandering, nomadic merchants among us.
More varied horse armour

Also remove oblivion style fast travel put in morrowind style fast travel with a few more locations. So then HORSES become infinitely more valauble.

Of course they need to figure out mounted combat.

Actually you know what. Forget all that. Remove horses altogether and give me a squire who'll follow me around, carry all my gear and clap two halves of a coconut together while I prance across the countryside 'monty python' style.

Look at Red Dead Redemption's horses. That, + a way of storing items on them, and we have horsey-perfection.

I like all the mentioned improvement. Besides, I think horses should be 2 person mounts, like in real life, because it would help greatly the escort quests. Instead of watching your companion's axx all the time, why not giving him/her a ride straight to the destination. And provided the mounted combat is implemented, the companion may make itself useful by shooting arrows to the pursuing enemies too :goodjob:

I would also maybe like some commands you could give to them (like stay put) so they won't run to their deaths or run away.

Now, to be fair, this is kind of what horses do when they sense danger. I mean, sure, one could use a rope, but that would be crazy.

Now, what I really want to see in Skyrim is carts. What the hell people, you can't have an empire without a perfect trade network. So many roads and yet only people walking from one place tot he other.

Hahahaa! Evil horse chased you across a field. That was hilarious. Were your pockets filled with oats perchance?

Anyway. Better controls. Better animation. Give the horse a personality. They are living, breathing things with emotions, not fiberglass go-karts. And mounted combat should play a part, but there should be benefits to fighting on foot.

well certian weapons wouldn't be usable while mounted and shields of specific seizes. Also horse strength and size would come into play when it comes down to what armor your wearing while on a horse, big slower war horse=heavy knight, fast smaller horse=light armor.

Agreed :goodjob: carts must be in the game, and many trader caravans for my bandit to attack :goodjob:

hehe, yeah :P never liked horses because I was chased by one when I was piss drunk here in norway. Had to cross a field to get to the house it was party, don't think the horse liked it very much!
so yeah, i was scared [censored]less xD
Norway is cool! That's where most of the black metal bands I listen to come from. Dimmu Borgir hails from there.

Oh and uhm, my character doesn't really like to ride horses any ways. I've never been a horse person, even in real life.

I suggested something like that earlier: "You" consists of yourself and two additional slots. How you fill those slots are entirely up to you, but everything is a tradeoff.
1) Only you and nothing else. Might be the way to move for some. Full jog and access to sprint as usual.
2) Only you and a hand cart. Lot as big or fast as a horse cart, but you get no stamina penalty for all that loot. No sprint, and jog according to slope.
3) You and two followers, for that extra punch, but you loose speed (compared to a horse).
4) One follower and one horse, where saddlebags are replaced with extra mount for your follower.
5) Only you and your horse, but can have extra saddlebags. This will be the fastest way to move around.
6) You, your horse, and a cart, for a lot more storage space at the expense of speed.
7) You, yourself, and a wagon, for escort services and bonus to camping (if survival is even part of the game).
If #7 is not possible, could at least be a good Strider replacement for those not fancying fast travel.

"Horses are useless" I see here. I find the black one very capable of getting me out of trouble when difficulty is high and I know I don't stand a chance. What really svcks is that once you've cleared a route/road, bandits and social creatures (goblins, I *hate* them at high difficulty, lol) respawn after only a couple of days. I hope in Skyrim that every time you've cleared a respawn point along a road, the respawn time doubles, making roads feel more and more secure over time. And that each respawn point also have additional random time to prevent the endless "battle every 100 meter" scenario. Not everyone uses fast travel. And if I do in Skyrim, I want it to be a bit more refined than a teleport. "If you don't like it, don't use it" they always say. And later the alternatives can also be removed since we have fast travel. Just great :(

No I don't want them, horses are annoying creatures,! much rather run around on my own without have to worry about the horse getting killed by a troll or whatever. and no mounted combat does thing even more annoying, jumping off the horse every time you get attacked.

You don't like riding them so you want them removed from the game so no one else can use them? Maybe... you know... don't buy one?

Better animations for the horses are not really necessary in my opinion (I actually work with horses in RL, so I can say the animations are pretty good). Mounted combat is a must. By the time my character dismounts and takes aim at a baddie, it's already KO'd my horse. If Mount&Blade had a mounted combat system in 2008, Skyrim can outdo it several times over. Saddlebags would be a great edition, too.

But the one thing that really irks me is the fact that none of the horses have reins! Both the PC and NPCs lok as if they are holding the reins when in fact there are none. How are the supposed to steer the horse? It's almost funny.

Someone else also commented on the fact that no matter the terrain there is only one sound effect for the hooves. Maybe that was just overlooked...

If they're like Oblivion they may as well not bother.

If they change the entire game structure/environment design from Oblivion and feature Mount&Blade Combat with Red Dead Redemption Animations, I'll be stoked. But with that in, the focus of the game would probably turn to mounted open world combat and you wouldn't bother with narrow dungeons.

Draft horses yes.

I want them to actually climb up hills this time, not just just go up a hill with the same exact animation every time.
