Horses!

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:14 pm

I don't know about you, but I suffered over the fact that there were no horses in Fallout - thank GOD the next game is TES V, where we can be reasonably assured there will be horses.

What do you think about them this time around? How should they be implemented? What kinds of barding should be available? And should hardcoe modes apply to them?

Personally I enjoyed the implementation in TES IV for the most part. About the only thing I would change is the ability to fire bows/crossbows or attack from horseback - that is definitely something that was missing from TES IV.

Thoughts?

I felt that it was just as fast to run in OB, so I never really used them. So that could change, along with being able to attack while on them. And I'd like it if you could put a couple of packs or something on them for extra storage.

I would like a variety of animations or sets instead of just one so horses can be different in ways and a small addition but enjoyable is being able to name your Horse

I'm not so sure about Horses , ever since I have played "Red Dead Redemption", horses in all other games have looked really bad.Unless they can match that quality then maybe we could have a fast travel mechanic unique to the game.

If they do put them in, then I expect a complete overhaul to what they were in Oblivion. Mounted combat is a must, obviously, but their whole implementation needs re-working.

That is strange, because they did sometimes use them.

I agree with this. The only time I used them was when I didn't really feel like fast travelling, but didn't want to have to walk all the way from Cheydinhal to Anvil either.

I agree - the bar was definitely raised with that one :)

While I think it is unlikely to get the kind of animations and ease of use that we got with horses in Red Dead Redemption. If Bethesda had something to strive for that would be it. As far the actual horses go hopefully they take reference from horses such as the Icelandic Horse. Be a bit odd seeing say a Arabian-styled horse in Skyrim.

Mounted combat yeah hopefully that will be implemented. As well as real weight behind the horse, ie; being able to knock people down.

Hmmmm actually yes it does compute, horses are used in cold weather climates all the time in places like Greenland and Iceland. In fact a good friend of mine (Artisten) lives in Iceland... on a horse farm.

Though to be fair they aren't the classic kind of horses people think about being mainly heavy coated, shorter, draft horses (which I hope are the kinds we see in Skyrim) not the Arabian or Mustang breeds of horse.

But yeah horses certainly have their place in Norse culture, hell can't have Sleipnir without horses having some cultural significance.

I'd like there to be some variety in mount this time round, horses would have to be Clydesdale at least to suit the cold, hostile enviroment of Skyrim.

But wouldn't it be cool if we could get something like a war bear or a tame worg as a mount, just for flavour and a bit of variety to just horses. Which are boring.

A large rideable ram would also be very cool

I wouldn't mind horses. I just hope the new engine is better suited to using them. I hated the "loading area..." pause when riding around, they should just make sure that doesn't happen at all in this one.

I personally dislike the horse implementation in Oblivion. Horses aren't fun to use because:
- The controls are imprecise
- You can't fight or cast spells on horseback
- When under attack, horses always try to fight back and get themselves killed instead of escaping
- The animations are bad

I hope these issues will be fixed in Skyrim.

Well horses were clearly a tacked-on feature of Oblivion, and as the guy above me said the animations were truly dreadful, as were the controls. Have you ever played Shadow of the Colossus or Legend of Zelda? That's how you do horses in games. Use that for inspiration Bethesda, and you'll do fine.

I was unable to Launch myself off my horse into the enemy for a quick attack, I felt this was very annoying, I don't Fancy Fighting on the horses, I have no intention of having my character let down by some weak horse, however the fact that my character had to get off the horse always on the same side and always slowly was somewhat annoying, being able to bail from the horse would be a welcome change.

Yeah, Shadow Of The Colossus has awesome horse animations & controls. The game makes you feel so sorry for (accidently) hurting your horse.

Yea, horses in Oblivion were badly made. I want to fight while riding a horse , and faster mounting/dismounting.

HORSEBACK COMBAT.

"Okay, Gilboron. Anything to say on controls or so-"

HORSEBACK COMBAAAAAAAAAT.

Also I want decent realistic historically accurate war horses, not racing horses.

I never felt horses fit in the game. Skyrim is not earth so I'd like to see no earthly-creatures at all, like in Morrowind.

I would like to see some sort of creature transport that you can ride like DRAGONS! F YEAH!
