No horses

Post » Wed Jan 19, 2011 9:01 pm

Just make the horses like how they work in World of Warcraft - they are essentially a graphic to ligitimize why you are moving faster than run speed. I don't want a horse riding simulator. And I want to instantly mount and dismount. I just want my horse to be an easy way of moving faster through the world.

Horses are pointless with fast travel.

Speak for yourself. I hope I'm not alone in liking to roam around Bethesda's gameworlds and I hardly consider the role-playing value of owning a horse and exploring on it to be pointless. Also, my horse makes fast-travel take less time, and for my role-playing purposes, I like to travel as quickly as possible, so I always mount my horse in Oblivion before fast-travelling outside of a city. To those saying horses were too slow... when, with your level 40 supercharacter with 100 speed, 100 skill in heavy armor, and 75+ athletics skill? I've still never had an Oblivion character move faster than my black horse... especially with a fortify speed on touch spell.

A lot of people have said that horses don't make sense considering the Mountainous terrain. But a big portion of Skyrim is a large plains area, like a plateau.

Horses are more practical than a spear anyway, I wouldn't mind a different kind of mount as well, http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Technology/Pix/pictures/2007/12/21/goldencompass.article.jpg anyone?

That's why man used spears for about 25,000 years before he domesticated the horse.

And as for "I find horses improbable in a snowy mountainous climate though," maybe it would help if you knew more about horses, or snowy mountainous climates. Sure, horses generally don't live on mountains, but neither do people. They live in the valleys, only crossing over the mountains if they need to. And having horses in a mountainous region can't be any more improbable than riding a polar bear, which are the species of bear most likely to hunt people for food.

Horses are pointless with fast travel.

Why? They create a more believable world, seeing the patrols on the roads in Oblivion was awesome.

Yeah, this is exactly what Todd said and he was right. The world would feel strange if such an important element was missing. I'd be happy even with unmountable horses rather than just M'aiq Jr explaining that they all ran down from a mountain cliff and died.

Yeah, it would be as if you could acquire beef, but there were no cows anywhere.

Oh.. wait... :P

Not confirmed or denied yet, I find horses improbable in a snowy mountainous climate though.

One thing that would make horses much better would be if you could pack your "luggage" onto them. My suggestion would be something like what the Native Americans used- a simple framework upon which bundles could be strapped and attached to the horse so it could be drawn behind the animal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_horse

Hmm, reading the breed's characteristics from the article it seems like the perfect horse for Skyrim.

Some snippets for the lazy:

-Developed from ponies taken to Iceland by Scandinavian settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries.
-Icelandic horses weigh between 330 and 380 kilograms (730 and 840 lb)[1] and stand an average of 13 and 14 hands (52 to 56 inches, 132 to 142 cm) high,
-...theory suggests that the breed's weight, bone structure and weight-carrying abilities mean it can be classified as a horse, rather than a pony.
-The breed comes in many coat colors, including chestnut, dun, bay, black, gray, palomino, pinto and roan.
-The breed is known to be hardy and an easy keeper.
-The breed has a double coat developed for extra insulation in cold temperatures.
-Their most productive years are between eight and eighteen, although they retain their strength and stamina into their twenties.

Now just take all of those characteristics and put them in a Clydesdale size package and we got our horses for Skyrim.

I think fast travel wise we should have a GTA4 cab system, since you can go anywhere, it makes sense, and it doesnt cost imersion. So I think somthing like it would satisfy most of us.
As for horses, I liked them and would expect them to return.I must go across the land stealing horses yet again, they also carry a sense of imersion.

I'm so sorry but did I miss this?

Are there no horses? There what makes the game so immersive, and make it feel more real why would they remove horses :'(

Horses were just not complete in oblivion, they were only a half finished feature, it was just something you could sit on to move faster and was really worthless because of the fast travel system, if you have horses with no horse combat or no real point to them other than moving faster then i'd prefer not to have them, i liked morrowind better than oblivion regarding travelling... except that you just ran so much slower than in oblivion.

However about icelandic horse, man these things rock!! so fast and strong yet so small. riding an icelandic horse > riding a motorcycle

We still don't know if they're ridable. Todd sounded pretty negative about them in the podcast.

Having said that I can't see why they'd be in, especially like that with a saddle, if they couldn't be ridden...

I want a horse, but only if I can use it as portable storage. If it's killable, make sure it's got a ton of health.

BUT he didn't said that horses were out did he? :)
considering we've seen them in the trailer, with saddles and everything,i think its obvious they're in as mounts.
