Horses: Useless. Anyone else agree?

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 5:16 am

Perhaps D'jinn is simply doing something wrong, but she finds horses very frustrating. She cannot seem to keep them alive for more than a few minutes.. and then what, free horse meat and hide? Wonderful, that surely makes up for the thousand gold D'jinn spent on you, horse. D'jinn gets around fine without such unwieldy beasts. Anyone else feel the same?

The silliest thing happened to one of D'jinn's horses, the first and only one she actually paid for. A dragon appeared and was chasing after D'jinn, so her horse somehow went up into the sky to attempt to fight it... then fell to the ground and died. From then on, D'jinn simply "borrows" horses if she feels the desire, but more often than not ends up abandoning the worthless beasts. Either that or they find ways to get themselves killed. Why do these creatures refuse to stay alive? It confounds D'jinn. She does not like horses.

The level of hell that would envelope known world would be unfathomable had they left out horses.

I have found that when traveling on horseback via roads etc I meet a lot more people (Skooma dealers etc). Don't meet hardly anybody when traveling on foot.

So is cooking, and forks. And embalming tools. And many other items.

They are there to offer you a rich, fulfilling experience. My Khajiit won't step near a horse. Smelly stupid creatures that give her presence away too many times.

Horses would have their value improved tenfold if there was no such thing as fast travel in this game. Otherwise they are pretty much for roleplaying.

Haven't really used them. Don't like the panning out to third person, they're not fast enough to be an attractive alternative to fast travel, and they seem like a liability in combat.

The only thing I found really good for horses are two things.

1. Can fast travel over encumbered. Not a big deal now that I took on the challenge laid out a few weeks ago that said no fast travel.

2. They climb up the side of a mountain like a billy goat. Just run up the side of the rock and keep jumping.

I was going to say something along these lines. I will only use a horse for roleplay value other than that no I will not use them at all.

I'd prefer it if they just implemented mounted combat, instead. Also, remember, you can only fast travel to a location once you've discovered it.

The only real probelm I have with horses is having to get off them to fight, Once you understand that's the way it is and you adapt, I find them a fun addition and much more useful than in Oblivion,

If my follower would get on one when I did... then possibly useful.

Once I noticed my housecarl would not, then I abandoned it. Nevermind all the hassle of getting off to pick alchemy reagents.

in my opinion, they don't seem to move that much faster than being on foot... I mean if there was a noticeable difference in speed and they didn't die every time you jump off a 5 foot ledge they'd be more worth the time and money

I stopped using them when I realized that if something ambushed me on the road I'd have to dismount and get my sword while the beastie is chomping on me.

No thanks.

Now if horses were faster, if you could do some basic attacks while mounted, and if they also included special devestating attacks (lance charge anyone?) the situation would be entirely different.

There are much hardier horses in the game. Once you get one of them, you'll never want to travel on foot again.

The horses in skyrim were all bitten by radioactive spiders... they climb better than you!

I also love running past the countless, meaningless skirmishes I have with wildlife. I think I put wolves, bears, sabre cats, and trolls on the endangered species list my first few hours of playing!

apparently, this universe has not yet discovered how to train horses to stay put unless directly attacked, and to not wander off at random immediately on dismounting.

Maybe if they let us feed some useless carrots or apples to the horse to make it stay put?

Why are you refering to yourself in the 3rd person?

And yes, they are useless. If they were alot faster and had alot more stamina and didn't attack everything I could see myself using them, but right now sprinting on foot is just better. Horses should run away from dragons, not charge in with their stupid hoof attack. In what universe are horses predatory??

Exactly. Or, if Bethesda continues to stubbornly refuse to allow mounted combat because it "changes the feel of the game," as Todd has said, then at least let use draw our weapons while still mounted. That way we aren't caught with our pants completely down in the event that we encounter a hostile while out riding.

S/he is speaking like a Khajiit.

I haven't even gotten up on a horse. I just find walking easy enough, and I don't want to be responsible for a horses death.

Pretty useless, yeah. With more wilderness areas(but not necessarily on a Daggerfall scale) horses would be alot more useful.

Guys guys guys, Cool it with the "Useless" terms or complaints in general. a Beth dev rolls by this they'll say leave out horses or any kind of mounts period rather than improving it.

downloaded a mod that allows you to hold the CTRL button down and use your horse as a pack horse making them able to carry items.

I like that they're IN the world, because it adds quite a bit to see the stabled up or attached to carriages, but as for riding them... yeah. They're pretty useless, unless you need a distraction or a quicker way of getting up hills.
