Horses: Worth it?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 12:45 pm

Storage device, that's about it. They sometimes help out in combat I guess, for me they do a couple kicks then run away. Just if you want one bad enough run through the DB quests and get the horse they give you.

When you say storage device, do you mean how it will carry you at normal speed even when you are personally overloaded?
Or is there some way to interact with it to store stuff on it like you can do with companions?

Playing with a no-fast travel character, I always use a horse.

Yeah me too. I never use the click-to-teleport fast travel so horses are really useful. Not always, but mainly for going from cities - between which I travel with carriage - to towns like Riverwood, Rorikstead or Ivarstead.

Haven't bought one, but I have found two in my travels that let me ride them without it being counted as stealing. They wandered off (presumably back to wherever I found them) as soon as I dismounted though.

I am tempted to buy one to try this out though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9QbWhL6cD8
I've got the coin to spare. :)

Horses are stupid. They charge into combat as if they are the dragonborn, against enemies they cant possibly hope to beat. I have on numerous occasions dismounted and had a battle only to find my horse (eventually after a good 5 mins of searching) dead in a bush at the side of the road. They aren't that quick either. Pointless.

Just hope they add Horse Armor as DLC!

Actually.................. given how my horse tends to charge into fights and join in, Armor might be useful this time lol

If all I was doing was following roads, I might consider one. But for exploring mountains and dungeons? Probably not a good idea.

Horses keep dieing on me... I run into a bandit camp by accident, and the first thing they do is kill the poor thing.

Just waiting for the modders to fix it.

A sijmple dismount > stay here, be able to toggle aggressive, passive, defensive AI for them. Then having a simple "Whistle" to have them come to you would have made them 100x better.

In Oblivion, the horse was my first investment on any character because riding felt natural. In Skyrim I abandoned it after a few trips because I don't like forced 3rd person view, awkward controls and having to search for it after every fight.
I wish I could sell it or give it to companion.

Bought one horse, didnt like the controls. For some reason he would stop sprinting randomly.

That because horses have an invisible stamina meter. But all you have to do is let go of the sprint button for a split second and it refills instantly, which is strange I suppose.

Beforehand I used some crappy horse from the Riften stables, who was hopeless and always dying. Never ran away when he should have. But ever since I got Frost, I use him all the time. Pretty strong horse, and will run away and go into recovery mode if he gets overwhelmed before rejoining the fray and delivering the final blow.

Although one time he got into a fight with Iona... and killed her! Seriously, Frost is a beast!

I found a horse right after i exited to starting area, was riding around abit, saw some bandits, noticed the very slow dismounting, killed the bandits and then coudnt find my horse again.

Thats all my experience with horses and all experience i will have with em :)

The Dark Brotherhood horse have saved me tons of time. Yes, they are worth it ! (as long as you sprint with "alt", which I guess many have yet to figure out)

horse are a complete waste of time :(

shame as they look lovely and are well animated and are a pleasure to ride . I feel sorry for whoever made them and then had all his work ruined by the AI guy who gave them the AI of a homicidal lunatic.

I do use a horse, they are the best climbers in skyrim. (It is actually possible to ride up the Throat of the World from the Whiterun side)
With my no fast-travel character a horse is very useful, but not a must.

I was considering a companion dog for my travels. Has anyone tried one
yet?

I got a dog and was content with it even tho it kept barking, untill I dicoverd that its abselutely mental and suicidal. I'm a sneaky archer so when I engaged an enemy and the dog charged in only to be killed I decided that a dog wasn't worth it. I don't want to go around constanlty watching out for my dogs health. It's pretty sad, cause dogs are awsome.

I haven't tried riding yet. And I don't think I will, since I prefer to walk when traveling anyways.

you can fast travel faster with a horse, meaning you arrive at an earlier time than without a horse. also horses can pretty much run right past any enemy easily. other than that I do also find them annoying sometimes, especially while trying to fill soul gems with wolfs and your horse kills the wolfs before I can cast.

Horses control horribly in Skyrim imo, not sure if it's to do with my setup (keyboard and mouse). Oblivion despite all it's flaws had much better horse controls.

Worth it if you learn how to use one properly. Your horse can dps, which is handy anytime you are ambushed. You can also outrun wolves, bears, dragons etc. Leaving your horse near enemies will get it killed, sometimes it won't be where you left it because it run away when it got attacked etc.

Horses look so badass in Skyrim and I have the badassest one (Shaddowmere), but the real fun of the game is to strike out on foot. Discovery and upping all your stats to stay alive is a real thrill. I like to get a mission on the other side of the country and cut across in a straight line to see what I will find. You find the most entertaining side quests that way. Nonetheless my horsie is a beaut. With the dark armor and the wizard mask I really look like a wraith perched on that beast.

Cheers
