Horses: Worth it?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 2:04 am

Excuse me if this topic has come up before in the forums.

Do you find horses worth the money?
I enjoyed riding around for a while, especially as the animation is so well done, but lately I have started traveling more without it, due to it's many idiosyncrasies.

In particular...
Once a fight starts they run straight into trouble, and even though they can hold their own, I find I have to pay more attention to it's health than I care to
Often they end up in some completely random location after combat and you have to search far and wide to find them
They are a b**ch to maneuver in tight spots, and occasionally when you dismount you end up falling off whatever precarious escarpment you are on
When you encounter anyone along the road you want to chat to, you have to dismount
When you run into a fight along the road, there is quite a significant delay while dismounting and unsheathing, during which time you or your horse is getting pummeled

Now I finally have infinite Sprint via the Resto perk, Respite; I find that I tend to prefer footslogging from location to location

The having to dismount to interact with anything makes it quite annoying. I bought a horse on my first two chars, and on my last two re-rolls, I haven't bothered getting one, and doubt I will till much later if at all.

I bought a horse and rode a short way with it before giving up and using the console to replace the cash i had spent. Waste of 1000 gold in my opinion.
Can't outrun things, miss a ton of ingredients and screenshot opportunities, companions get left in the dust and forced third person perspective.

Nah, I'll stick to walking.

I bought one from Whiterun Stables, and I never use it. Ironically the horse
is an inconvenience to me. Dismounting takes too much time, and the
horse can't walk backwards. :read:

I was considering a companion dog for my travels. Has anyone tried one
yet?

i think the only time i used my horse was to get to the city before high hrothgar, just cuz there's nothing nearby really for me to get there easily

but after that i haven't really used it...maybe if it was faster

Bought one horse, didnt like the controls. For some reason he would stop sprinting randomly.

During dragon fights, he runs so far away, i spend 5+ minutes trying to find him.

Just running everywhere now.

No, not one bit. The only horses I will ever ride will be free. The one bonus would be a storage device. (Heard you can store stuff in 'em, not sure though.)

Storage device, that's about it. They sometimes help out in combat I guess, for me they do a couple kicks then run away. Just if you want one bad enough run through the DB quests and get the horse they give you.

I bought my horse and literally within moments it died, after it tried to single-handedly (hoofedly?) beseige a fort of necromancers.

I was expecting Oblivion like controls when I first used one (stolen), ended up running around in circles while the owner was throwing punches at me. Also, there isn't a first person perspective on the horse is there? Hmm.

Not only that, it may have been just me... but they seem to run a little slower than expected.

Give me my 1,000 septims back.

If only I can use fight like a knight, charging, slashing and shooting from the horse back, well, then maybe we need cavalry perks. Hope someone can make such a MOD about this, it would be super cool!!!!!!

I found having a horse pretty useful for it's awkward rock climbing capabilities.

Some bandits own horses...You kill the bandits, you can steal the horse no harm no foul. No one cares when you steal from bandits lol

Trick is to reanimate it and ride it like a death knight. Can you do that even?

You guys who are complaining about not being able to outrun things:

You know you can sprint on the horse, right? On the PC it is the Alt key (not sure on about consoles) to go from trot to a gallop. It's actually pretty fast, and lasts longer than you last when running.

It's the same button as the sprint key when you're unmounted.

I don't use a horse, cause I feel bad with my companion running behind me...especially since I make her carry all my stuff. It would be nice if a companion could ride with you.

Good to know, I haven't really had the chance to play the game much more - so I wasn't able to discover that. I only recently realized you could even sprint, and thats been after I last played. Now if only the horse would tone down its aggressiveness. I dismounted my horse in what I thought would be a safe location. I ready my weapons as I engage an enemy some distance away. Out of no where my horse zips by me "I'LL SAVE YOU!" *dies*.
