That's because when they join you as a companion, they're leveled to your level. They do not relevel with you, meaning if you had Lydia join you at level 8, she's a level 8 warrior.

I thought your followers levelled up with you? Does this mean my followed will become obsolete in 20 levels?

Do not listen to this blasphemy, I am level 81.5 now and if Lydia did not level with me she would be killed instantly. She does all of my killing now, I just watch.

No blasphemy at all. From the Skyrim wiki -

A follower's stats are determined based on the level the player is at when he or she first enters the zone that the follower is in. Once generated, the follower's stats do not increase at all. For example, Lydia is usually one of the first followers players will have access to, and most players receive her at a lower level. As such, most players' Lydias will have low stats for the entire game.

If you have an attachment to a certain follower and wish to continue to use him or her after he or she has become obsolete, you can update his or her stats by dismissing the companion, then opening the console, clicking the follower in question, typing "disable" and then typing "enable" without the quotation marks, then ask them to rejoin. The follower's inventory will remain unaffected, but his or her stats will all be updated to match the player's current level.

It's a shame Astrid couldn't be a follower (for obvious reasons), she was the foxiest npc i've seen yet.

What's silly is this goes against everything Todd was saying about trying to make sure companions are worthwhile.

I believe I read in another thread that they do in fact level... but their stats don't change? That's a pretty glaring oversight if so. It's kind of ridiculous they don't level with you. I'm starting to give up hope that Bethesda will bother with fixing some of these issues. The Creation Kit can't come out soon enough. I didn't expect them to actually make their goal of releasing it at release but I'd have never expected a two month delay.

Instead of saying they don't level it's horrible, take them with you at high levels and see. At low level if you got her soon in your adventure, Lydia is killstealing constantly. Then after leveling a while, if you gear her up she'll be a great boost in damage dealing. Accept that at high level she won't be as tough as the Dragonborn. If she was as efficient as in the beginning during the whole adventure, that would be annoying.

Companions are worthwhile. You just can't expect them to do all your hacking and slashing the whole adventure while you're eating your sweetrolls. For that you have to find a new companion. Your first housecarl retire. Welcome to your new one.

The Dunmer from the Thieves Guild Quest-line was okay if you remove the hood.

If you're on PC use the console to level your companion. Remove any gear you gave them, click on them and type "disable" and enter, the "enable" and enter. Then exit the console. It'll force level them up to you. I do it each level and the "500 Gold" hires have around 550 health when I'm at level 41. Their main weapon skill is at 100.

Aela is the hottest IMO but sometimes she goes off on these uncontrollable killing frenzies and she can't be stopped. Some of them aren't even hostile!

Straight from the wiki.

Bugs

She is prevented from having the marriage dialog option due to a quest conflict.

Although Lydia levels up with the player, her stats and attributes are not always recalculated, resulting in her being increasingly vulnerable at higher levels.
PC NoteTo recalculate her stats, use the console command a2c94.disable and then a2c94.enable while she is dismissed.
