Considering how long they've supposedly been working on 4 and Bethesda told them what was off limits, it probably wasn't a throw-away statement.

I can't get a handle on the timeline. I read somewhere that F4 is set in basically the same time as F3, so House is pretty busy (New Vegas is, what, 2 to 4 years afterward?).
I've also read theories that F4 is something like 10 years later, so who knows?
(I still expect references to House, though. I also expect Zimmer and Li to show up.)
Pete Hines verified its 200 years after 2077. Some take that more loosely, but I think it means 2277. In 2277, House has built the strip and is dealing with the first battle of Hoover dam. Guess he would be a bit busy to concern himself with the east coast.
Todd and Pete have used the term "200 years" in regards to Fallout 4's placement after the war, but they could be making [censored] up to keep the real time the game takes place a secret.
Bethesda is so anol about always going forward in the timeline that they made Obsidian change NV's plot slightly to be set after Fo3, when originally Obsidian had suggested it be set between Fallout 2 and Fallout 3.
It would be odd if they actually set Fo4 before NV because of this.

“We talk to Bethesda all the time,” he said. “And I think the challenge here doesn’t just apply to Bethesda specifically, but to a lot of publishers in general. But basically, what does all the [current] console crap mean? The challenge in this period of time has been, you have this console transition, and it’s strange that they’re still not announced. But that always creates a disruption in the industry. And now you mix in [the emergence of] mobile and F2P stuff, and it’s left a lot of people reeling.”
“So that’s a lot of the conversation we’ve had with publishers. ‘OK, how do we get back to normal – whatever normal is going to be.’ That’s just the process right now.”
Meanwhile, I also managed to pull Bethesda’s Todd Howard aside and get his two cents, which basically amounted to a reiteration of Urquhart’s sentiment. Nothing’s set in stone, but New Vegas was great, and having another go at it certainly makes an awful lot of sense. So, right then, fingers crossed. Extra radiation-borne ones too, if you’ve got ‘em.
You know, it just dawned on. OMG MIT will be in the game? LOL. This will be fun.
Guess it s the "Institute" now. Now that I think about it, wonder if that a pre-war moniker or post-war re-naming.
Edit: never mind, the obituary calls it the "prestigious Institute in Massachusetts"
House's obituary called it The Institute.
I don't see why he would call it that if it was a post war name given that its unlikely he even knows if it still exists or not, let alone that they changed their name.
well it is M.assachusetts I.nstitute of T.echnology... so it could be called just The Institute by people who work or went there.
I never heard anyone call MIT the "Institute". That sounds more like a political think tank. it's like calling West Point, "The Point".
But who knows what 400 years of radiation will do to a name. Any news about Harvard?
Idk, maybe it and Yale are buried in mutant, radioactive ivy
"you noticed new vegas is a part of the fallout collection that'll come out later this year (or did it already?), right? and you heard todd say how well the cooperation with obsidian worked, and you heard obsidian's "anytime again if they ask us"? (let alone various "they can do with the franchise whatever they want" statements) or maybe you noticed how f03-fnv-fo4 timelines match, or how fnv's totally pointless ammo crafting system got turned into a "craft anything" system? etc etc"
...would be what i'd ask you if i'd take that "everything better" claim serious... mmmuuuahahaha.... how about a PLAYABLE GAME to start with?
wasn't that ~1 fo every 4 (fo-)years?
pls correct if wrong
New Vegas' ammo crafting system certainly wasn't "pointless". HP Ammo was a better option against high hitpoint, low DT targets. AP Ammo was a better option against high DT targets. Standard ammo was more common. Energy Ammo gained Damage and DT Penetration with each stronger variant, but the stronger variants also increased weapon degradation.
Hopefully stuff we find in the Institute will establish the history of fallout tech a bit more. Like when transistor chips were first created. Or the history of robots. Its weird how Repconn places Mr. Handy as a Robco bot when the timeline says he was made by General Atomics years before Robco was even established. Gotta imply some other pre-war robotics geniuses that rival House.
Pointless?
This is a pic, I take myself. No mod or chems. Just special ammo.

If you do not know how to use, do not call it pointless. ammo crafting system is ESSENTIAL for any serious player who plays at very hard and do not want to be stuck with only the most powerful weapons.
Yep. The Ammo Crafting system worked very well with the DT system, especially if you knew how to use it and took advantage of it. Very Hard difficulty made it practically a requirement.
Unfortunately, it looks like the DT system isn't going to be in Fallout 4, so we're back to "DPS is King, baby" and "Go Power Armor or go home". Really not looking forward to being more scared of an enemy with an SMG or full auto Assault Rifle, than an enemy with a Sniper Rifle, Plasma Rifle or Missile Launcher.
Of course they didn't, they don't even playtest their games.
:^)
ok, my bad, i should have said "pointless for everyone who happens to not be a gun nut and/or not want to bother with this kind of stuff"
i played hardcoe mode with a laser rcw, a sniper rifle and an assault rifle btw, standard ammo only (see above). and survived. (probably easier for stealth chars)
Doubt he'll be in Fallout 4 but I do see a reference in a log somewhere in the institute being a thing.
There will definitely be a reference to him in the game
