Personally I am a big supporter of the New California Republic. My character helped founded the country back in Fallout 1 and I personally helped them to become a major power in 2, so I might be biased - but I really do think that NCR is the best hope of restoring democracy and progress to the wasteland, and can do a much better job of helping the common people compared to all the other major factions. So I planned to help them gain control over the Mojave region when I finally get the game later this year.
But after I watched a video of Mr. House explaining his motives and goals, I really don't want to kill him since he isn't a bad person at all. He might be a bit egotistic, but from what I know, his extensive knowledge of science and economics will really help the survival of humanity in the long-run. Sadly, from what I read, you will have to assassinate Mr, House at some point in order for the NCR to win.
Is there a way to have the NCR to be victorious in the end without killing Mr. House? I know there is an option of just cutting off his controls and making him unable to command anything, but to do so you will still have to open the case he is preserved in first, an act that will result in him dying within a year. Couldn't there have been a peaceful way to end the conflict between the two factions?
In one of the dialogues, Colonel Moore mentioned that the New Vegas Strip isn't really that important for the NCR compared to Hoover Dam. Mr. House also admitted that even after New Vegas gains independents, his main source of income will still be from selling electricity to the NCR and tourism from the republic. So the goals of the two factions are not actually in direct conflict. Couldn't they just honor the terms in the Treaty of New Vegas and have an arrangement similar to the possible truce between the Brotherhood of Steel and the NCR?
So to get to the point, is there an option in the game to have an NCR victory without killing Mr. House? If not, what do you think are the reasons that it isn't possible?
