How about some lucky love for us non-VATS'ers?

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 2:14 pm

As far as I'm concerned, there's two play-styles in the game. The Perception/Agility/Luck focused one that utilizes VATS a lot, and the other one. I use the other one. I just don't like VATS that much in this game. I've played the original games as well Wasteland 2, so it's not that I don't appreciate where it comes from, I just don't think it's the most enjoyable way to play Fallout in its current iteration.

I'm quite perplexed that a whole 3 of the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes has no effect on combat at all outside VATS (except for perks of course). It could easily not be so. I'm mostly sad that the gunslinger/luck style has gotten no love for those of us who enjoy handcrafted headshots and mutilations. The best reason to use guns is that they have a low AP cost, which works nicely with a luck focused build. Except for those who don't want to use VATS that much of course.

Would it be to much to ask that they include a rework of this in the future? Luck could for instance grant a passive chance of critical hits that increases cumulatively for all shots taken outside of VATS. Perception could increase hip-fire accuracy (as it's both very low, very usefull, and not a factor in VATS). I'm not sure agility needs another function as it already affects sneak and has some nice perks. Though I do think some agility perks could use a non-VATS functionality, and the luck-perks especially needs to have two effects, one in VATS, and one separate outside of VATS.

I just want to be a little lucky, that's all B)

I would love to be able to build up a crit outside of VATS (at even 1/2-1/4 the VATS rate) even if it required you to go into VATS to use it.

Would be nice

I'd have to agree with this all the way, I do not use VATS never have and always used some LUCK with FO3, I'd better quickly add I do not believe LUCK had exactly the same influence in FO3 as it does in FO4? Perception, Agility and Luck should all have an influence on your character no matter what play style you use, how does VATS (a targeting system) use Agility? Perception as in improving detection = maybe? Luck well that should effect everything and back to Agility I know I used that on FO3 (I'm pretty sure, He He) just to improve my basic Agility which improved my weapon skills and not just my VATS. Again I may be wrong on this but I'm sure VATS was an extra thing to use if you wanted to in previous games, not something that as the OP said utilises three of your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes and unless you use Perks those three attributes do not help a non-VATS player as much???

I have a lot of points in luck, though I never use vats. Simply because it renders the game too easy. I put 5 points in luck (+bobblehead) to encounter more legendaries.

Whether or not you encounter legendaries are governed by your difficulty setting. Not your luck. (From an "in character" viewpoint you'd be unlucky to encounter a legendary enemy!)

Edit: Appears I was wrong!

For us addicts, Overdrive is an option. It gives you +25% Crit Chance while active. This functions both as extra crits during Vats, and just random crits outside of it.

Makes me wonder if there's supposed to be a crit chance per luck point and they just forgot to flip the switch >.>

Are there random crits outside of VATS? I was looking at my stats awhile ago, and I had 26 sneak attacks and 26 crits, so I assumed that was the only non-VATS way to get critical hits.

The lack of random crits outside of vats is an extremely terrible design choice.

Agility is fine as it is, at least 1 skill has to better VATS. Perception is fine as well, because they got the best perks for the best weapons ( snipers - shotties cover almost every encounters, all rolled in 1 skill ) but I agree that luck is too VATS dependent. Would be nice if every attack increased the luck bar just a tad instead of only VATS attacks increasing it by a lot.

Yeah, last I looked it was something like 168 sneak attacks & 168 crits. So it doesn't look like there's any random crits. Unless there's some perk or drug that triggers it, that I haven't used.

I think they restricted criticals to VATS so your armor mods would be have to be oriented either towards using VATS or dropping fusion core bombs on enemies from the sky (for example).

Like I said above, Overdrive allows a 25% crit rate outside of Vats. It's not a perfect solution, but it works.

Of course skills can be useful in VATS. All I'm saying is that they should be useful outside of VATS as well. Let's assume agility is, but that still leaves 2 out of 6 that aren't. If you mean to say that one skill has to be better in VATS than outside, I don't really see why, but I'd argue that "fine, they can be *more* useful in VATS. Just don't let them be negligible outside".

This is a problem all on its own, which is outside what I'm bringing up, but it's not a reason to think that Perception shouldn't have any bearing on your out-of-VATS combat.

Given that armor legendary abiltites seems to be inactive in a power suit, I always disregard them. After lvl ~10-15 I'm always in a suit when I'm doing anything meaningful.

Correct. It's only a VATS functionality. Every hit increases a "bar" that you need to fill in order to "execute" a lucky crit. How that in any way reflects a lucky shot I don't know, but regardless I want something to happen outside VATS as well.

I dunno about the english version of the game, but the german description of luck states that you will encounter more legendary mobs when having a lot of luck points.

That svcks! I haven't played the game yet,but I've been hearing some folks say you can and can't get crit. Why would they do this!? I have no problem with the VATS crit system, but it really blows outside of it. Oh well...
