How to activate a magic effect on a player?

I would like to find out how I can activate a magic effect on a player from a script. I mean the same kind of magic effect that you can get from drinking potions. Of course I could make a dummy potion but then I haven't yet found out how I can actually let the player drink that dummy potion? Is there a a better way to do this? I see lots of functions (in OBSE and otherwise) to see what kind of magic effects are active but I can't see any function for actually adding one.
