So, how are the skill checks in this game?

Other than the persuasion dialogue for charisma, how are the skill checks in this game?

What sort of interesting dialogue options have you seen appear in response to your player's SPECIAL?

One thing I loved about 3 and New Vegas was how new dialogue options would appear based on what your skills and SPECIAL were. It helped flesh out my character's persona and really added some replayability to the game. I loved how certain scenarios and quest branches were determined by what your character's skills were, like in 3 how you could use your intellect to defeat John Henry Eden and explode Raven Rock, or in New Vegas where you can bypass entire quests by using your skills to solve problems instead of your guns (telling the boomer's how to make a re-breather instead of going on a quest to find one, healing the sick to gain the affection of their respective faction etc).

Here's a basic example of what I mean: https://i.imgur.com/XF6k3Yx.jpg

So, what are some of your favorite skill checks so far?

They are gone as far as I can tell. I haven't seen any besides the charisma ones.

Seriously? Why would they take them away?

Yep I have only seen 3 in over 30 hours of play. Almost every quest you have to go in guns hot.

Why you ask? I am guessing more people want fps games than rpg anymore. It reminds me a lot of borderlands and farcry.

I have seen plenty of persuasion options, and I'm not sure if my SPECIAL didn't influence some of them, I only have 3 charisma, and plenty have been "Yellow" (high chance).

Many quests with some form of interaction between characters have allowed me to at least try to talk someone into something, in one way or another, and just meeting people in the cities often prompted a charisma check, which I might've passed if luck was on my side! (2 luck T_T)

They are gone. There's only the generic persuasion check dependent on charisma.

I guess Bethesda envisions different things for the game, maybe something that will also attract cod fans etc (sorry, I couldn't resist).

(btw I am almost sure that the color depends on the general charisma req - doesn't change with your charisma score.)

I wonder why Bethesda decided to remove this....?

Well they have been cutting up the RPG aspects of their games for quite a while now. I too was disappointed by the utter lack of special and perk related dialogue options.

It's just so disappointing. It was one of my favorite aspects of New Vegas and 3. This significantly lessons my chances of ever spending money on this game.

I agree with the desire to have skill/perk/character-related dialog, but aren't people confusing NV with FO3? Maybe there were more options in FO3 (or Skyrim/Oblivion, etc.) than I remember, but I don't think of BGS as being big on this type of feature. They used to offer some flavor responses, though. Now it's just bland.

I know you were just having fun here with that comment. But it's going to need to be much simpler for the COD folks. My work mate asked me if I liked it and he went out and got it. Hates it. Can't figure out how to get weapons, ammo or how to not die. He's just a mess.

Still, I feel like this is a huge step back.

It is. It's a gigantic step backward. The 4 dialogue options are crippling the options.

I have no idea why Bethesda chose to go in this direction when they had to lose so much in the process.

As far as I know, the color coding isn't affected by your chance of success but by how much the base check is difficult. You could have 10 or 1 charisma it would still how yellow. I quite like that tbh, I imagine it's you perceive how charismatic the other guy is (by his posture/way of speaking).

Another problem with how they did it is that unlike the previous games where they had strenght, intelligence etc you now only have to carry around one set of clothing for charisma. I only have 5 base charisma but between a suit that give you 2 charisma, a hat with another charisma and some sunglasses that give you 1 charisma that already gives me 9 charisma and I just need to down a Gwenneth stout in order to make 10 charisma and pass all the challenges in the game. Once I choose another charisma point in order to get the local leader perk I won't need the stout or any booze or mentats to reach 10 anymore I can just put on my suit, hat and glasses. It is literally a complete and utter joke of a skill check system.
